Deux pages rédigées à l'encre noire sur un feuillet remplié. Le destinataire de cette lettre a apposé neuf lignes manuscrites, brouillon de sa future réponse, à la suite de la lettre de Flaubert. Cette lettre a été retranscrite et reproduite sur le site internet du Centre Flaubert de l'Université de Rouen. Le transcripteur de cette missive précise : « Les lignes écrites sous la signature sont-elles de Beulé ou de Flaubert-lui-même ? L'écriture ressemble à la sienne. Stéphanie Dord-Crouslé suggère que Flaubert a pu aller voir Beulé et écrire sous sa dictée ces éléments qui répondent aux questions posées. » Cette hypothèse nous semble peu probable dans la mesure où l'on connaît la réponse de Charles-Ernest Beulé à ce courrier elle-même numérisée par le Centre Flaubert et datée du 10 février 1860. Cette réponse ne nous paraît pas induire une visite de Flaubert chez Beulé. Il nous semble plus vraisemblable que Beulé ait inscrit sous la lettre de Flaubert un brouillon de sa future réponse du 10 février 1860 qui ne sera qu'une reformulation élégante de ses notes. Beau et important témoignage des recherches colossales qu'entreprit Flaubert pour la rédaction de Salammbô. « Commencé en 1857, le roman paraît en 1862, période où l'Antiquité revient à la mode et où Carthage est « au goût du jour » grâce aux fouilles récentes de Charles-Etienne Beulé à Byrsa (1859) et dans les ports puniques. » (Vanessa Padioleau, « Flaubert et Carthage : Salammbô, roman polymorphe » in Revue Flaubert, n° 9, 2009) C'est donc à l'un des spécialistes de la question que Flaubert adresse ses questions, commentant sa récente lecture d'Ammien Marcel : « J'ai appris, dans ce même Ammien, que les Carthaginois ont pris Thèbes, en Egypte [...] Qu'est-ce que cela veut dire ? Ce passage est, je crois, peu connu ? » La tâche de Flaubert n'est pas mince : on ne connaît à l'époque rien ou presque sur la période de la Révolte des Mercenaires qui s'étendit sur deux années, de 240 à 238 av. J.-C. Il entame alors un travail de fourmi, appuyant ses recherches sur les textes des grands historiens de l'Antiquité qu'il lit en latin dans le texte. La lettre que nous proposons en montre d'ailleurs sa grande maîtrise : « J'ai appris, dans ce même Ammien que les Carthaginois ont pris Thèbes, en Egypte, livr[e] xvii, ch. iv. "Hanc inter exordia pandentis se late Carthaginis, improviso excursu duces oppressere Poenorum" [« À l'époque où Carthage commençait sa large expansion, les généraux des Phéniciens vainquirent celle-ci par une attaque à l'improviste »]. » Malgré ces recherches des plus approfondies, la porte de Carthage ne connaîtra qu'une très brève description dans la version finale de Salammbô. Quelques soulignements et corrections manuscrites de l'auteur. Minuscules taches d'eau. Trois petites restaurations à l'aide d'adhésif sur la seconde page ainsi que deux traces de pliures inhérentes à la mise sous pli du courrier. Amusante lettre dans laquelle Gustave Flaubert, dont la renommée littéraire n'est plus à faire, apporte son soutien à son ami Léon Cladel qui peine à faire publier l'un de ses ouvrages. Le « maître » - c'est ainsi que Léon Cladel nomme son confrère - démarre cette lettre avec enthousiasme : « J'ai commencé votre bouquin hier à 11 heures il était lu, ce matin à 9 ! ». Le « bouquin » dont il est ici question est L'Homme de la Croix-aux-Bufs que Flaubert avait accepté de relire pour son ami le 30 avril ; il en avait d'ailleurs réclamé le manuscrit déposé chez l'éditeur Georges Charpentier à ce dernier : « Cladel m'a écrit pr me dire qu'il désirait que je lusse (pardon du subjonctif) le roman en feuilles qui est chez vous. Donc envoyez-le-moi, ou apportez-le-moi. » (Lettre du 3 mai 1877). Léon Cladel, très proche de Gustave Flaubert, semble lui avoir fait part des craintes de l'éditeur édouard Dentu quant à la publication de son ouvrage : « Et d'abord il faut que Dentu soit fou, pr avoir peur de l'im le publier. » En familier aguerri de l'impitoyable monde de l'édition, Flaubert se place en professionnel et déclare : « Rien n'y est répréhensible soit comme politique, soit comme morale. Ce qu'il vous a dit est un prétexte ? » Cette question de la répréhension morale n'est pas sans faire écho au célèbre procès intenté à l'auteur de Madame Bovary. Tel un critique littéraire dithyrambique, Flaubert complimente son confrère : « Je trouve votre livre, un vrai livre. C'est très bien fait, très soigné, très mâle. & je m'y connais mon bon. » Lecteur scrupuleux, il se permet néanmoins quelques remarques sur le manuscrit de Cladel (« J'ai deux ou trois petites critiques à vous faire (des niaiseries) - ou plutôt des avis à vous soumettre. ») avant de se raviser : « Qqfois, il y a des prétentions à l'archaïsme et à la naïveté. C'est l'excès du bien. » L'attitude de Flaubert est ici quasi paternelle et en tout cas bienveillante : conscient des capacités de son ami il souhaite l'encourager et voir la publication de son ouvrage aboutir : « Mais encore une fois, soyez content & dormez sur vos deux oreilles - ou plutôt ne dormez pas - et faites souvent des uvres pareilles. » L'écrivain bienveillant évoque également dans cette missive un autre éditeur, Georges Charpentier : « Quant à Charpentier (auquel je remettrai vos feuilles vendredi - jour où je dîne chez lui) je vais lui chauffer le coco violemment, & en toute conscience, sans exagération & sans menterie. » Charpentier qui édite Flaubert depuis 1874 est devenu un proche ami de l'écrivain avec lequel il entretient une riche correspondance. En ce mois de mai 1877, il vient juste de publier Trois contes qui fut pour Cladel l'occasion d'une émouvante célébration de son maître ès Lettres : « Où diable avez-vous pris ce rutilant pinceau dont vous brossez vos toiles, les petites comme les grandes, et cette sobriété que certains latins vous envieraient ? Être à la fois Chateaubriand et Stendhal, et de plus Flaubert ». Cette admiration est réciproque et Flaubert éprouve pour ce « véritable artiste » une estime non feinte : « La fin est simplement sublime ! - & du plus gd effet. » Il réitèrera, quelques semaines plus tard ses compliments : « C'est travaillé, ciselé, creusé. L'observation, chez vous, n'enlève rien à la poésie ; au contraire, elle la fait ressortir. » En effet, Cladel s'affirmera comme le véritable héritier du style flaubertien, bien plus que Zola qui lui reprochera justement de « travaille[r] sa prose avec acharnement » et de « s'efforce[r] de rendre parfaite chaque phrase qu'il écrit ».
