‎Studies in the Sacred Page: Encounters with Medieval Manuscripts, Texts, and Exegesis; A Book of Essays in Honour of Lesley Smith‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, ix + 266 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Illustrations:14 col., Language: English. ISBN 9780888448347.‎

‎Summary This volume of twelve essays aims to honour the career and scholarship of Lesley Smith. The first section begins with two witnesses to Lesley's excellence as teacher and culminates with an appreciation of her as a scholar. The second section explores the scholarly terrain in which Lesley has made her most signal contributions: the material and cultural sites and artefacts within and by which the Christian Scriptures emerged as a field of theoretical inquiry in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The third and final section explores Latin Christian use of scriptural inquiry and understanding so as to engage scholarly and religious traditions outside those of the Latin Church. ‎Summary The present book is a result of the Turfan studies carried out at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities since more than 100 years. The edition of Old Uyghur fragments that could be assigned to various texts about the Bodhisattva Avalokite?vara provides an insight into the history of Central Asian Buddhism. The monograph is accompanied by commentaries to a large number of subjects related to Tantric Buddhism of the Middle Ages. Some of the manuscripts have illustrations of the 40 objects held in the hands of the Bodhisattva Avalokite?vara of thousand arms and eyes well-known from statues and temple banners from Turfan, Dunhuang as well as China, Korea, and Japan. The Old Uyghur manuscripts are mainly based on Chinese originals of the Mijiao section (T. 1057, T. 1060, T. 1064 and T. 1982). One booklet was translated from a Tibetan original. The book concludes with a word index as a complement for the study of the Old Uyghur lexicon. ‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2022 Paperback, 328 pages, Size:210 x 270 mm, Illustrations:47 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9781912554270.‎

‎Summary This is the ninth volume in a continuing series of publications listing and identifying all illustrations contained in English manuscripts from the time of Chaucer to Henry VIII. Because representations of all types are included?from miniatures to marginalia? the series provides unparalleled reference to imagery in the long fifteenth century. The present fascicle, the second of two devoted to the collections in Cambridge, catalogues 553 manuscripts for eleven colleges and can be used as a search tool for manuscripts available on line. The manuscript entries in the catalogue note the subject of every illustration, all of which are fully indexed in the index of pictorial subjects. Entries for alchemy and medicine are particularly rich in this fascicle; the largest entry is for costume. The broad range of pictorial information makes the Cambridge fascicles useful supplements to the fifth volume of A Catalogue of Western Illumination in the Fitzwilliam Museum and Cambridge Colleges. Like the other fascicles in the series, Cambridge II includes a manual for users, an extensive glossary of subjects and terms, indexes of authors, texts and incipits, as well as a list of manuscripts with coats of arms. There are forty-seven black and white illustrations.‎

‎Summary Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts (1814-1906), descendant of a wealthy and well-known family of bankers, inherited quite young, through a series of unpredictable circumstances, the enormous fortune of Thomas Coutts, her maternal grand-father. She spent most of her long life in London, where she occupied a prominent position in society, becoming well-known not only for her splendid life-style and her important literary and political acquaintances, as, for instance, Charles Dickens and Admiral Nelson, but also for her active role as a philanthropist. This book explores a little-known side of her life; although she did not know Greek, she became the owner of ca. 100 Greek manuscripts, mostly theological, datable between the tenth and the sixteenth century, a part of which she donated to Highgate School. The manuscripts, with all the Baroness's possessions, were dispersed at auction in 1921 and in 1987 and are now mainly divided between American and European University Libraries. This book has identified for the first time the Baroness's Greek manuscripts, located and described them in detail, with special attention to their script style and their origin, adding to their description one or two plates of each codex.

‎Summary For manuscript historians, the Bible in the form of a codex represents a handcrafted object of the utmost importance: it was the sacred text par excellence and served as a vital reference point in the lives of medieval monks. In addition, it functioned as an indispensable tool for daily liturgical celebration, and as a study text and individual reading book for the purpose of moral edification. The manuscript collection of the Montecassino Abbey presents an exemplary case study, both for the total number of biblical manuscripts it preserves (just under a hundred, and for the diversity of types (complete 'monolithic' Bibles, Old and/or New Testament sequences of varying size and physiognomy, and individual glossed books with commentary beside the text), as well as for the presence of a significant group of codices in Beneventan minuscule produced for internal use within the same Abbey or in its dependencies in a period centered around the eleventh century (with sporadic extensions into the twelfth and thirteenth). The present catalogue aims to deepen our current knowledge of the presence, transmission and reception of the Bible in one of the most important and emblematic medieval Benedictine monasteries. ‎Illuminated Manuscript Production in Medieval Iceland. Literary and Artistic Activities of the Monastery at Helgafell in the Fourteenth Century‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 275 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:192 b/w, 22 col., 47 tables b/w., 2 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503589022.‎

‎Summary This book examines a cultural revolution that took place in the Scandinavian artistic landscape during the medieval period. Within just one generation (c. 1340-1400), the Augustinian monastery of Helgafell became the most important centre of illuminated manuscript production in western Iceland. By conducting interdisciplinary research that combines methodologies and sources from the fields of Art History, Old Norse-Icelandic manuscript studies, codicology, and Scandinavian history, this book explores both the illuminated manuscripts produced at Helgafell and the cultural and historical setting of the manuscript production. Equally, the book explores the broader European contexts of manuscript production at Helgafell, comparing the similar domestic artistic monuments and relevant historical evidence of Norwich and surrounding East Anglia in England, northern France, and the region between Bergen and Trondheim in western Norway. The book proposes that most of these workshops are related to ecclesiastical networks, as well as secular trade in the North Sea, which became an important economic factor to western Icelandic society in the fourteenth century. The book thereby contributes to a new and multidisciplinary area of research that studies not only one but several European cultures in relation to similar domestic artistic monuments and relevant historical evidence. It offers a detailed account of this cultural site in relation to its scribal and artistic connections with other ecclesiastical and secular scriptoria in the broader North Atlantic region. ‎Poetry, Art, and Music in Guillaume de Machaut's Earliest Manuscript (BnF fr. 1586)‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Paperback, 476 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:119 col., 22 tables b/w., 1 maps b/w, 18 musical examples, Language: English. ISBN 9782503586915.‎

‎Summary Around the middle of a career lasting over forty years, Guillaume de Machaut (c.1300-77) was afforded an outstanding opportunity to present his oeuvre in a book. The occasion arose in the late 1340s, when a special manuscript was commissioned, perhaps by Queen Jeanne de Bourgogne, for the first time collecting all of Machaut's works, including narrative poems, lyrical poems, musical settings of lyrics, and motets. The manuscript would celebrate Bonne of Luxembourg, the wife of a future king of France. Only the royal treasury could have funded the extraordinary team of craftsmen involved in its production - from the careful preparation of fine parchment, to the calligraphy and ornament of the text, to the carefully copied innovative ars nova musical notation, to the miniatures painted in a shop directed by one of the greatest illuminators in France. Then Bonne died of the Black Death in 1349, just before the manuscript was completed. It would be finished for her son, the future King Charles the Wise. Although Machaut would go on to supervise other manuscripts, none were so luxuriously executed as his first complete-works manuscript (Paris, Biblioth que nationale de France, fr. 1586), known today as Machaut MS C. The present volume, the first dedicated entirely to MS C, offers a multidisciplinary collection of essays written by fourteen leading scholars, who provide innovative approaches to literary, musical, art-historical, and manuscript studies. It is replete with images, including over sixty colour reproductions from MS C itself. ‎Beyond Words. New Research on Manuscripts in Boston Collections‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, xxxii + 361 pages, Size:228 x 304 mm, Illustrations:91 b/w, 200 col., Language: English. ISBN 9780888442215.‎

‎Summary In the fall of 2016 an international scholarly conference accompanied the exhibition Beyond Words: Illuminated Manuscripts in Boston Collections. The speakers were chosen because of their expertise and because they were known to have research underway pertaining to important manuscripts in the exhibition. The aim of both exhibition and conference was to provide a broad overview of the history of patronage and book production over the course of the High and late Middle Ages, to the extent that the eclectic holdings of Boston-area institutions permitted. Most of the papers delivered at the conference have been collected as essays in this abundantly illustrated volume which, while still linked to the exhibition, now has an independent purpose. Just as the essays cover a wide range of topics, all relating to the history of the book, but also, inter alia, to the history of law, liturgy, literature, and libraries as well as to devotion, theology, and art, so too the approaches adopted by the contributors are as varied as the materials they study, ranging from paleography, codicology, and provenance research to painstaking reconstructions of historical patterns of patronage and the interpretative strategies of authors and artists. What results is not simply a wealth of fascinating insights into individual illuminated books, their makers, and their readers, but also an indication of how much remains to be learned about the materials to which the exhibition served as no more than an introduction. ‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, xix + 463 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Language(s):English, Armenian. ISBN 9782503590349.‎

‎Summary Hellenists know the services rendered by the R pertoire des catalogues de manuscrits grecs of Marcel Richard and Jean-Marie Olivier. It is an indispensable heuristic tool, but also a witness to the development of codicology and cultural history. Such a tool was lacking for specialists of Armenian manuscripts, philologists, linguists, and art historians. Armenian Manuscripts. Catalogues, Collections, Libraries (in English) is the second edition, revised and updated, of the R pertoire des biblioth ques et des catalogues de manuscrits arm niens first published in 1992. It includes the four supplements published in the journal Le Mus on in 1995, 2000, 2004, and 2019, as well as new sections devoted e.g. to the main copy centers of Armenian manuscripts. The book provides a full bibliography on all repositories of Armenian manuscripts in the world, public and private, large and small. It also gives many insights about the fate of Armenian manuscripts in the course of history: where and when they have been produced, mostly in medieval monastic centers, how they escaped invasions, fires, thefts and even destructions linked to the genocide of the Armenians, and finally how they ended up in private or public collections where they can be studied and admired today. Tables of concordance between current and old references enable one to locate manuscripts that are thought to have disappeared or to find more complete descriptions in an old catalogue than are given in recent lists. The volume also includes an impressive index of manuscripts. ‎Summary An intriguing development in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth-century Christian Hebraism is how and why Christian scholars came to produce their own Hebrew books. Jewish Book - Christian Book: Hebrew Manuscripts in Transition between Jews and Christians in the Context of German Humanism offers a novel examination of this phenomenon in light of nearly unknown Hebrew manuscripts produced by German Hebraists in that period. Anticipating Hebraist printed editions, the Hebraist manuscript copies of Jewish texts represent one of the earliest attempts of Christians to independently form a stock of Jewish literature, which would meet their scholarly needs and interests, and embody a unique encounter of Jewish and Christian views of the Hebrew text and book. How Hebraist copyists coped with the inherent "Jewishness" of the Hebrew texts and in what ways they transformed and adapted them both textually and materially to serve Christian audience are among the key questions discussed in this study. ‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, vi + 369 pages, Size:150 x 230 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9780888448330.‎

‎Summary This volume pays homage to manuscripts and early printed books as material witnesses in the Middle Ages. The essays discuss broad questions relating to the partisan interpretation of texts, but they also illustrate how small details of format, script, and decoration uncover the text, its context, and its reception. Some articles explore scientific methods, examining whether social network analysis can offer an advance over traditional methods of establishing textual connections and using statistics to understand the transmission of ancillary materials. Others present critical editions and contextualize lost genres, providing a first edition of an unedited summary of Ovid's Metamorphoses steeped in the Boccaccian genealogical tradition, exploring mock funeral eulogies for animals, and discussing the variety of texts that pay witness to Ovid's penetration into vernacular literature. A closing brace of essays catalogue collections and reflect on changing trends in the study of manuscripts. ‎Pore Caitif. A Middle English Manual of Religion and Devotion‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, 296 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503582931.‎

‎Summary The Pore Caitif is an anonymous late fourteenth-century manual of devotion and religious instruction destined for a lay readership. The text, in its various forms, circulated widely and was evidently very popular, as the fifty of so extant manuscripts and fragments readily attest. Of them, no fewer that twenty-eight transmit a full text showing remarkable fidelity to the now presumably lost archetype. As such, the Pore Caitif invites comparison with the considerable production and diffusion of religious texts in English which figure prominently in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. In this respect, it is to note that some critics have argued for the presence of Lollard interpolators or commentators in a number of the extant manuscripts, including the influence of the Wycliffite Bible translation. This edition will be published in two volumes. This, the first, provides a full Introduction to the manuscripts and their transmission, classifying them in groups, while examining some of the trends observable in some of the more notable variants they inevitably preserve. A commentary on the text is followed by a full glossary. The second volume will discuss manuscript relationships and the problems arising therefrom. ‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, 327 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Illustrations:1 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503573397.‎

‎Summary This is the third and final volume describing manuscripts and fragments in British libraries containing commentaries and glosses on the Latin Aristotle. It covers institutional libraries from Aberdeen to York, including cathedral libraries, and lists 193 main items (including fragments dismembered from several books), dating from the twelfth century until c.1500. While many of these manuscripts have come to Britain from elsewhere in Europe and were only acquired post-1500, they represent teaching and learning not only in the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge but also in continental universities. A majority of them are now held in the British Library, London, and many have not been fully described before. The volume also includes addenda from Oxford and Cambridge, and four indexes are provided to facilitate searching the main text.‎

‎Summary The current volume presents ten different studies dealing with the final stages of Hebrew book art production in medieval Iberia. Ranging from the Farhi Codex, copied and illuminated in the late 14th century, to the Philadelphia Bible, copied and illuminated in Lisbon in 1496, this volume discusses a wide scope of topics related with the production, consumption and circulation of medieval decorated Hebrew manuscripts. Among the issues discussed in this volume we highlight the role played by three distinct artistic languages (Mud jar, Late Gothic and Renaissance) in the shapping of 15th-century Sephardic illumination, the codicological specificity of some solutions in terms of layout and the relation between the layout of these manuscripts and Hebrew incunabula, the use of geometric decoration in scientific diagrams, or the afterlife of these manuscripts in Europe and Asia following the expulsion of the Jews from Iberia. ‎Man and His Manuscripts. The Notebooks of Ademar of Chabannes (989?1034)‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, 338 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:154 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503587790.‎

‎Summary This book is devoted to the life, autograph notebooks and manuscripts of Ademar of Chabannes (989-1034), a monk of Saint-Cybard in Angoul me and Saint-Martial in Limoges. Together Ademar's writings bear witness to his enormous productivity and to his many talents as a historian, preacher, musical composer, liturgist, teacher and artist. His notebooks in particular, assembled in manuscript VLO 15 at the University Library of Leiden, shed a unique - and neglected - light on Ademar's capacities as a teacher. An analysis of the texts in VLO 15 shows that Ademar was interested in an extended curriculum (including medicine and Arabic astrology) and that he used a variety of techniques and methods to instruct his pupils. In this study extensive attention is paid to a critical, palaeographical and codicological investigation of the extant manuscript evidence, including some newly discovered material. Ademar's versatile writing habits, his way of preparing his parchment and the flexible way in which he constructed and used his quires are discussed, with detailed descriptions of palaeographical samples and numerous colour plates. These will enable the reader to follow the investigations into past ascriptions of manuscripts to Ademar. The evidence here presented offers a more positive and nuanced view of Ademar, who in recent years has been portrayed as a solitary forger leading a marginal life at Saint-Cybard, his place of exile, on account of his attempts to promote his patron saint St Martial to a position as one of Christ's disciples. Allegedly, the ensuing conflict led to his decision to depart for the Holy Land, never to return. However, the evidence of the manuscripts makes this unlikely and proves that Ademar had every intention of returning to his beloved monastery to continue his work there. TABLE OF CONTENTS Chapter I. ‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, 352 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:15 col., 6 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503585635.‎

‎Summary The traditional view of monastic orders in late-medieval scholastic culture has been relatively muted. Beyond the Franciscan and Dominican orders, and to a far lesser extent, the Augustinians and Cistercians, the older monastic orders (and especially the Benedictines) played a smaller role in the university during the thirteenth through the fifteenth centuries. Yet if the library collection of Saint-Bertin is examined more carefully, one finds that many of the books were added by alumni of the University of Paris and Louvain, and in one instance, Cologne, and that as a whole, the monastery's collection reflected the changing currents within late medieval intellectual society. Science in the Monastery proposes to analyze Benedictine science using Saint-Bertin as a vehicle. ‎Summary The documents in this volume were written by people of the West Uighur kingdom, which flourished from the second half of the 9th century to the start of the 13th century in and around the eastern Tianshan region including the Turfan Depression, and by Uighurs of the 13th to 14th centuries when this region had come under the rule of the Mongol empire (i.e. former West Uighurs). Old Uighur is a form of Old Turkic. This Corpus includes over two hundred letters that were written in Old Uighur using the Uighur script, which derives from the Sogdian script. Although the use of paper had at the time not yet spread to Europe, these letters are all written on paper. The ink is similar to that which was used in China, but the letters were written with reed or wooden pens rather than with writing brushes. The majority of these letters were discovered in the 20th century in China, either in the Turfan Depression in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region or in the famous Mogao Caves of the Thousand Buddhas at Dunhuang in Gansu, and a small number were unearthed at the remains of Kara-khoto in the Gansu Corridor.‎

‎Summary This edition presents the full text of a personal collection of temporale Middle-English sermons, compiled by a parish priest for his own use (preserved in Cambridge University Library MS Cg.6.16). It also includes the notes and fragments of sermons or exempla found at the beginning of the manuscript with a purpose of giving insight into the way a parish priest would compile materials. This manuscript has attracted attention because it perserves versions of these sermons' early stages. The current edition is therefore complementary to editions of later versions of the same sermons. The introduction provides a discussion of these sermons' textual history and the circumstances in which they were possibly preached. Explanatory notes, a glossary, and indexes complete the edition. ‎Summary This collection of essays examines medieval and early modern drama in the context of a rich and varied manuscript culture. Focusing on the production, performance, and reception of dramatic documents made in Britain between 1400 and 1700, the essays in this book shed new light on the role of dramatic manuscripts in a range of different social and literary spheres. From extant manuscripts of England's mystery cycles to miscellanies kept by seventeenth-century readers, the documents discussed in this volume reflect a culture of producing and using drama in ways that have been overlooked by the recent critical focus on drama and print by theatre historians and literary critics. By showing the various continuities, exchanges, lendings, and borrowings between medieval and early modern scribal practices, as well as between manuscript and print practices, this volume interrogates accepted critical narratives about the way that drama has been historicized. ‎Summary The Codex Amiatinus is perhaps the most famous copy of the Bible surviving in Western Europe. A fascinating and elusive manuscript, with a suite of decorated folios, it was made in Anglo-Saxon England around the turn of the eighth century at the twin monastic foundation of Wearmouth and Jarrow as one of three such 'pandects'. Created at the monastic foundation celebrated in the work of the Venerable Bede, this vast and luxe manuscript was sent by the Northumbrian monks as a gift to the Pope in 716 and, after a sojourn of some 900 years at Monte Amiato (Tuscany), it was donated to the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana in Florence in the eighteenth century. As a result of an international conference held to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the departure of the manuscript from Northumberland and coinciding with the production and presentation of a facsimile of the Codex to the Museum at Jarrow, this volume - the first devoted to the Codex Amiatinus - brings together twelve essays that offer a new appraisal of this remarkable book, and of the contexts that surrounded its production. Encompassing its text, its images, its social, political and ecclesiastical contexts and its later medieval legacy, the contributions to this volume highlight several previously unrecognised aspects and details of the manuscript that further our understanding of the Codex as a book, and as inheritor and progenitor of manuscript traditions in its own right. ‎Notam superponere studui. The Use of Annotation Symbols in the Early Middle Ages‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, 301 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:15 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503581705.‎

‎Summary Early medieval manuscripts were commonly annotated not only by glosses but also by annotation symbols. These graphic signs inserted in manuscript margins provided manuscript text with layers of additional meaning and functionality. From the most common signs marking biblical quotations and passages of interest to the sophisticated systems of signs used by some of the early medieval scholars, annotation symbols represent perhaps the most common form of marginalia encountered in early medieval books. Yet, their non-verbal character proved a serious obstacle to their understanding and appreciation. This book represents the first systematic study of annotation symbols used in the Latin West between c. 400 and c. 900. Combining paleographic evidence with the evidence of written sources such as late antique and early medieval lists of signs, this book identifies the most important communities of sign users and conventions in use in the early Middle Ages. It explores some of the notable differences between regions, periods, linguistic communities and classes of users and reconstructs a fascinating history of the practice of using signs, rather than words, to annotate text. Those who work with early medieval manuscripts will, furthermore, find this book to be a practical handbook of the most common annotation symbols attested in early medieval Western manuscripts or discussed in ancient and medieval sources. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction Chapter 1. The use of annotation symbols in Antiquity Chapter 2. The 21-sign treatise: inherited classical doxa in the early medieval Latin West Chapter 3. Transmission of other doxa with ancient roots in the Early Middle Ages Chapter 4. The revival of scholarly sign use in the Carolingian period Chapter 5. ‎Soul's Journey. Franciscan Art, Theology, and Devotion in the Supplicationes variae‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Hardback, xviii + 354 pages, Size:245 x 297 mm, Illustrations:244 col., Language: English. ISBN 9780888442109.‎

‎Summary The Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana in Florence houses an extraordinary manuscript: an anthology of devotional texts and images called the Supplica tiones variae, dated 1293 and made for use in Genoa, that ends with a remarkable series of full-page illustra tions. Although the Supplicationes does not include or illustrate Bonaventure's seminal text, The Soul's Journey into God, the manuscript is effectively the site for performance of a spiritual pilgrimage, for it is through the Franciscan theologian's mystical and poetic concepts that the deeper meanings of its images can be discerned. The decorative program of the Supplicationes mirrors Bonaventure's theology of Christ as Center. Circular in composition, the introductory drawing of the Dextera dei visualizes the book's underlying thematics of the center, while at the manuscript's actual midpoint, Christ is pictured as the Man of Sorrows, who conjoins opposites, human suffering and divine glory. Yet the manuscript is also a progressive journey of ascent. In the Supplicationes, as in Bonaventure's influential book, the path to salvation begins in the world, where humankind has fallen away from God. In its Labors of the Months and marginal drolleries, the manuscript's calendar gives unusual emphasis to the hard work, ignorance, sin, and distance from God that are part of earthly existence. But there is hope: even imperfect human nature innately reaches upwards, craving relief from misery. God answers human neediness, Bonaventure writes, with the gift of prayer, and the Supplicationes pictures this gift in an unusual miniature depicting Trinitarian grace descending on David in prayer. David becomes a model for the reader's subsequent journey through the manuscript's progressively higher levels of prayer, from the vocal prayers of psalms and offices to the contemplative prayer of reading. But it is especially remarkable that in this Franciscan book the highest level of prayer consists in contemplating images. In the sequence of tinted drawings that closes the book, text yields to image, as the reader-viewer performs a non-verbal, experiential imitatio Christi, perusing the thirty-three illustrations of Christ's life as if following the number of years of his life, and passing through Christ's humanity to salvation.‎

‎Imagining the Miraculous: Miraculous Images of the Virgin Mary in French Illuminated Manuscripts, ca. 1250-ca. 1450‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Hardback, xvii + 194 pages, Size:205 x 255 mm, Illustrations:94 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9780888442154.‎

‎Summary This is not a book about miraculous images of the Virgin Mary (be they icons, sculptures, altarpieces, or reliquaries) but about their representations in French illuminated manuscripts from ca. 1250 to ca. 1450. Most of these depictions of the Virgin Mary cannot be identified even tangentially with particular surviving images (such as the Virgins of Rocamadour, Soissons, Chartres, and Laon). Rather, these illustrations point to the ubiquity of local miraculous Marian images in devotional practices from the thirteenth to the fifteenth century in French-speaking regions. This book analyzes depictions of material images and the animated miracles they perform, and traces their evolution from the earliest narratives of Marian miracles written in Old French to texts and images produced at the Burgundian court of the late Middle Ages. Beginning with the most extensive compilation of Gautier de Coinci's Miracles de Nostre Dame, the study then examines lesser-known anonymous works such as the Vie des P res and encyclopedic collections including the French version of Vincent of Beauvais' Speculum historiale and the Ci nous dit, as well as a theatrical production of the Miracles de Nostre Dame par personnages, before concluding with the prose rendering of the Miracles by Jean Mi lot. Imagining the Miraculous explores the ways in which these works depict physical images, such as panel paintings and sculptures, on the manuscript page. Each chapter provides a detailed iconographical analysis of the miniatures and the diverse techniques of visual narrative they harness, serving also to show how attentive reading of their reception can help us understand how the miniatures themselves might have led viewers to imagine the miraculous moment when an image comes to life.‎

‎Leuven, Peeters, 2021 Gebundene ausgabe, zwei Teile, 849 seiten, 31 x 23 cm, Deutsch. *Neu . ISBN 9789042940857.‎
