ont> Chapman and Hall : London 1846 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A sound and very presentable copy of Thomas Carlyle's popular collection of the letters of Oliver Cromwell though lacking volume three. The second edition of this work. Incomplete in two volumes being Volumes I and II out of a total of three volumes. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece. Collated complete. A collection of the letters of Oliver Cromwell the Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England. This work is an interesting study into the development of the English Civil War. This work saw the rise of Cromwell's reputation in the early nineteenth century being seen in a positive light by Romantic artists and poets. Carlyle who edited this work describes English Puritanism as 'the last of all Heroisms'. This view of Cromwell was assimilated into Whig and Liberal historiography. Volume I looks at the beginning of the Civil War 1636 to the Second Civil War in 1648. With a total of eighty letters in Volume I. Volume II looks from the campaign in Ireland in 1649 to the Little Parliament in 1653. ALso containing a speech. With a total of ninety-seven letters in Volume II. Cromwell was born into the noble and aristocratic family descended from Thomas Cromwell Henry VIII's chief minister. Very little is known about the first forty years of Cromwell's life besides that he was elected Member of Parliament for Huntingdon. However in the English Civil War he entered on the side of the Parliamentarians or the 'Roundheads'. During the Second Civil War Cromwell's letters and speeches became more heavily based on biblical imagery which is evidenced in the letters in these volumes. The letters suggest that it was his faith rather than his radical politics that convinced him that God had spoken against the King and Parliament. Edited by Thomas Carlyle a historian who is well known for his historical works including his 'The French Revolution: A History' which was the inspiration for Charles Dickens' novel 'A Tale of Two Cities'. Condition: In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally generally smart. Light rubbing to the spines and boards. Mark to the rear board of Volume I. A little bumping to the extremities. Discolouration to the head of the front board of Volume I. Rear hinges are starting but firm. Internally firmly bound.
