Mit diesem Aspekt der Lessingrezeption hat sich die Lessingforschung allerdings bisher nicht in differenzierender Weise beschäftigt. Vielmehr hat sie sich unter literaturgeschichtlichen Gesichtspunkten mit der Einstellung Lessings zum französischen Theater, zu Corneille, Voltaire, Diderot u.a.m. befaßt. Sie hat offenbar weder die eindeutige Tendenz in der Lessingrezeption wahrgenommen noch der Tatsache Rechnung getragen, daß Lessing sich nicht nur mit einzelnen französischen Klassikern und Aufklärern auseinandergesetzt, sondern auch verallgemeinernd zu ?den? oder gar ?dem? Franzosen geäußert hat. Diese Lücke hat die Autorin schließen wollen. Dazu hat sie aus dem Gesamtwerk ohne Berücksichtigung der jeweiligen Gattungszugehörigkeit und ohne Applikation eines chronologischen Rasters sämtliche Äußerungen Lessings zu den Franzosen zusammengetragen. Aus diesen Textpassagen ist eine Collage entstanden, die eine Koppelung von Lessings Franzosendiskurs mit den drei immerwiederkehrenden Themen Höflichkeit, Laster und Witz erweist. Aus dieser Feststellung hat sich die Notwendigkeit ergeben, der Bedeutung von Höflichkeit, Lasterund Witz im gesamthistorischen Kontext nachzugehen, der sowohl für Lessings Schaffen als auch für die Lessingrezeption maßgebend gewesen ist. Die Arbeit läßt erkennen, wann und wie Lessing sich in Klischees seiner Zeit einschreibt, wann und wie er aus ihnen ausbricht und eigene Ansichten vertritt. Die Autorin will weder Lessings Motivationen noch die Gründe für die undifferenzierte Übernahme seines Franzosendiskurses durch die seitherige Lessingrezeption beurteilen, sondern ? unter Vermeidung jeglichen Harmonisierungsversuchs ? auf anschauliche Weise die Komplexität und Widersprüchlichkeit der deutschen Vorstellungen von ?dem Franzosen? aufzeigen.
