Vintage Books USA 1987. Softcover. Very Good. 7x5x0. Doris May Lessing CH OMG 1919 â 2013 was a British-Zimbabwean novelist. Lessing was awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature. In awarding the prize the Swedish Academy described her as "that epicist of the female experience who with scepticism fire and visionary power has subjected a divided civilization to scrutiny. Lessing was the oldest person ever to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature at age 87. In 2001 Lessing was awarded the David Cohen Prize for a lifetime's achievement in British literature. In 2008 The Times ranked her fifth on a list of The 50 greatest British writers since 1945. Like Arthur Bonner and Jan Goodwin Lessing joins the ranks of writers speaking out on behalf of the Afghans. This book of four essays evolved from a visit of Lessing and others who traveled to Pakistan on behalf of the agency Afghan Relief. Two themes emerge: the relationship between Afghan refugees and Pakistanis and the quest to find a female commander among the freedom fighters.
