‎Durling, Richard J‎

‎A Catalogue of Sixteenth Century Printed Books in the National Library of Medicine. Compiled by Richard J. Durling.‎

‎U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare ... National Library of Medicine; Bethesda, Maryland, 1967. XII; 698 Seiten; graph. Darst.; 26,5 cm. Goldgepr., illustr. Originalleinenband.‎

‎Gutes Exemplar; Rücken minimal fleckig. - Englisch. - The present catalogue lists and describes all sixteenth-century imprints held by the History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine. A few incunabula previously described by Dr. Dorothy Schullian in her catalogue of 1950 have been included also, as they may well date from 1501 or later. A subsequent volume will list the Library's holdings of seventeenth century items. The rules of entry are those set forth in the American Library Association's Cataloging Rules for Author and Title Entries (2d. ed., 1949), with certain exceptions. First, the names of corporate bodies which have changed are used in the form that was current at the time the work was published. Second, hospitals are entered under the name of the place in which they are located. Third, the form sub-divisions, "Spurious and doubtful works" and "Supposed author" (ALA Rule 31), have not been added to entries. Questions as to genuineness, authorship, etc., are resolved or aired in a note. Finally, no attempt has been made to anticipate the changes likely to be introduced in the forthcoming revision of the ALA rules. In transcribing title pages, recording imprint data, etc., the practice has been to follow, in general, the Library of Congress Rules for Descriptive Cataloging (1949). Lengthy titles have been necessarily somewhat curtailed, but not, it is hoped, to the exclusion of important subject matter or to the detriment of syntax. Accents found on inflected Latin forms have been ignored, but tagged e (for ae) has been retained. All contractions have been expanded. As regards imprint data, such information as is given on the title page is supplemented by that found in the colophon, preface, or elsewhere in the book; any such information not derived from the title page is enclosed within square brackets. The collation of the books is by leaves or pages, as suggested by the book itself, i.e., a book with numbered pages and unnumbered leaves or pages is described only in terms of pages; a book with numbered leaves and unnumbered leaves or pages is described in terms of leaves. ?

‎Paris, Dutel, 2009. In-8. 672 pages. Relié toile sous jaquette bicolore.‎

‎Third and final volume of the bibliography on French erotica published clandestinely. This volume deals with works published between 1650 and 1880. 1180 books are described in detail, 1168 illustrations show title pages or illustrations from the works. The author analyses and classifies the various editions of the great old texts, in particular 'Académie des Dames', 'Thérèse Philosophe', 'Histoire de dom B***' or 'Pucelle d'Orléans', each of which went through more than thirty new editions and were the most widely read erotic texts in the 18th and 19th centuries. Other important works include 'Le Libertin de Qualité, l'Arétin Français, La Fille de Joye, Parapilla' and 'La Foutromanie'. Despite their later success, the Marquis de Sade's texts such as 'Justine' or 'La Philosophie dans le Boudoir' were less published and less read than, for example, Andréa de Nerciat's 'Félicia ou mes Fredaines', which went through 17 editions. 'Les Tableaux des Moeurs du Temps' and 'L'Antijustine', two important titles of erotic literature, only went through 5 editions. The author also attempts to update and complete the list of publications by publishers based in Brussels at the end of the 19th century. Jules Gay's publications were often copied, and a number of the editions attributed to Poulet Malassis are nothing but pirated copies. Contrary to previous opinion, the publisher Vital Puissant now appears as one of the most important persons for the clandestine works published in Brussels. Description minutieuse de 1180 éditions.

‎An important and commendable bibliography that covers the clandestine French erotic works published in Brussels, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Paris, among other places, in great completeness. The bibliography meticulously records 933 editions and classifies the works into specific groups of publishers and editors according to typographical ornaments and vignettes, all of which are illustrated. Furthermore, 692 title pages are illustrated. The bibliography contains notes on publishers, printers, authors and collectors and includes previously unpublished documents. This bibliography opens up an important and extremely productive period for erotic literature. The author was awarded the Bibliography Prize of the French Antiquarian Booksellers' Association for this work. Description minutieuse de 933 éditions. ‎HISTORICAL SKETCH OF BOOKBINDING AS AN ART.‎

‎144p. 8vo. Original gold decorated red cloth binding. Spine worn. Front fly leaves scribled. "The history of the art of bookbinding is always parallel to the history of artistic taste in every country . It has flourished with every movement for the advancement of art and has fallen with every materialistic revolution. Its decadence has been evidence of a decadence in the manners and morals of the t imes; its rise has been a barometer of the increasing affluence and well-being of a country and a people." **PRICE JUST REDUCED! ‎DVORAK MAX; SWOBODA KARL MARIA PREFACE; KLAWITER RANDOLPH J. NOTES & BIBLIOGRAPHY‎

‎Idealism And Naturalism In Gothic Art‎

‎University of Notre Dame Press Notre Dame: 1967. Hardcover with dustjacket in protective mylar cover. Good condition. Until recently Medieval art was treated in terms of the historical document and placed in vauted isolation between antique classical art and the opulent realism of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Compared unfavorably to the past judged retrospectively by the future. Medieval art was delineated in terms of a transition period punctuated by incessant church building as evidenced by the great cathedrals of Western Europe the stauary of Reims and the rose windows of Chartres. In his art concept Max Dvorak continued and extended the work of Franz Wickhoff and Alois Riegl by freeing art history from the bias of other-century comparison restoring the art of the Middle Ages to a universal-historical classification and presenting a new understanding of Medieval Art. Translated into English from the German bu Randolph J. Klawiter. Includes an Index. University of Notre Dame Press, Notre Dame: 1967 hardcover‎
