‎Paris, Hacquart, 1818, in-4, (8) CCXXII, 405 (1) pp, Demi-veau olive postérieur, dos lisse fileté à froid [Laurenchet], Édition originale du premier Codex pharmaceutique national français, rédigé en latin. La traduction française a paru quelques semaines plus tard, chez le même éditeur, sous le titre de Code des médicaments ou Pharmacopée française. Exemplaire authentifié par le timbre de la Faculté de médecine de Paris et par la signature autographe du doyen de la même Faculté. Cet ouvrage rare et fondamental fut publié par ordre du roi pour remplacer l'ancienne édition de 1748 qui "n'était plus au niveau des sciences chimiques". Sa réalisation, décidée à la suite de la réorganisation de la profession pharmaceutique en 1803 (loi du 21 germinal an XI), fut longue de quinze ans. La publication fut jugée sévèrement par la Société de Pharmacie de Paris, via son organe, le Journal de pharmacie de Paris, pour diverses raisons : l'obligation pour chaque officine de pharmacie d'en posséder un exemplaire fut considérée comme de la vente forcée, certains notèrent des maladresses dans les tournures latines, la classification des médicaments fut jugée incommode... ‎6 8 242 3 1 blank pp.First edition of a translation into Dutch of medical recipes collected by the British physician George Bate 1608-1668 originally published as the Pharmacopoeia Bateana in 1688. Bate had been personal physician to Charles I Oliver Cromwell and Charles II and had been so highly regarded that his papers were collected and printed 19 years after his death. According to the foreword the Dutch publisher had given the book to a number of Dutch physicians including Steven Blankaart who recommended it be translated. Among Bates's recipes are a number of peculiar medicines such as "Aqua omnium Florum" made from cow-dung gathered in the month May and "Spiritus Sanguinis" made from the putrid blood of a young man distilled in the sand. A list of medical titles printed and sold by the publisher appears on the final two pages.With a 19th-century owner's inscription on the pastedown and a shelf mark on the front cover. More than ninety percent of its articles were later incorporated into the Pharmacopoeia of the United States of America issued in 1820. This copy was extensively emended by its 19th-century owner Hayward who added detailed manuscript notes of several plants not listed in the Pharmacopoeia directions for compounding various preparations etc. Hayward is not listed in Kelly & Burrage nor does his name appear in the AMA's Dictionary of Deceased Physicians 1804-1929. ‎XII 192 pp.Rare second edition of "the first general as distinguished from hospital 'pharmacopoeia' compiled by an American" Cowen first published at Paris in 1798. The first part of the book is a classification of diseases and is taken word for word from the influential 1769 nosology by the Scottish physician William Cullen. The second part is a pharmacopoeia divided into materia medica and composite medicines. The introduction notes that it is based on the author's notes made at the University of Edinburgh the London pharmacopoeia and Joseph Townsend's The physicians' vade mecum 1794 p. x. Between the two parts can be found a list translating the Latin names of the chemical preparations "which not all readers will view as sufficiently legitimate" p. 77 into the modern English and French nomenclature.William Tazewell d. 1832 was an American physician who had studied in Edinburgh and in 1797-1800 was secretary to Elbridge Gerry in Paris. After returning to the United States Tazewell set up a medical practice in Williamsburg and later moved to Virginia. In 1803 he presented copies of his Vade-mecum to George Washington and Thomas Jefferson the latter writing that "it has really brought the whole science of diseases & remedies within the shortest compass possible and not meddling with the details of the science himself it presents exactly such a general view of every part of it as Jefferson often wishes to take" Cowen.With a small price in pen on the first flyleaf.
