‎Levitt Helen; Essays by Robert Coles‎

‎In the Street.‎

‎Durham NC: Duke University Press 1987. First edition of the photographer's second major photobook. Quarto original cloth. Signed by Helen Levitt on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Not to be confused with the more common paperback edition. Helen Levitt and the author James Agee first collaborated in 1945 on a documentary film set in Harlem called "In the Street." Psychologist Robert Coles contributed the essays to this volume. Owen Edwards from The New York Times has noted that "in common situations Miss Levitt finds the glint of an often bizarre beauty that most of us-including photographers-do not notice. . . . She brings to her pictures an intensity that can be almost hypnotic." "There is no fundamental difference in the great landscapes and quiet portraits of Edward Weston and the profoundly revealing pictures of children by Helen Levitt. Both are photographic perceptions of the highest order" Ansel Adams. Duke University Press hardcover books‎

‎DRAWING & SCULPTURE‎

‎New York: Walker & Co. 1970. Levy who died in 1996 was a well-known British artist art critic and art teacher who published numerous books and created a very popular BBC tv series "Art For Houswives" during the 1950s and '60s. "Drawing and Sculpture" published in 1970 develops Levy's contention that too many painters even great ones have used their talent to dash off drawings as a "form of negative relaxation" while the drawing of sculptors closely related to their sculpture at the highest level permits "no margin for the wastage and frivolousness that so often distinguishes the drawing of the painter." Levy then provides a selection of work by sculptors from Verrocchio and Michelangelo to David Smith and Alexander Calder with numerous illustrations to prove his point. First printing first U.S. edition. About 10 x 11 1/4 inches 165 pages containing 146 b & w illustrations many full-page and four color plates showing work by 15 artists. Light tan cloth-covered boards with black lettering on spine. Sorry no dustjacket. Boards are slightly bowed with light soiling and wear at edges and corners o/w boards and text are complete clean and unmarked. Hinges and binding intact. Not ex-library or remaindered. No creasing or tearing or other significant damage. While not a collectable copy this book with its comparative illustrations still has value as an economical reference/study copy. Hard Cover. Good Plus. Walker & Co. Hardcover‎

‎King Spider: Some Aspects of Louis XI of France and His Companions‎

‎Hartford: Coward McCann 1929. This First Edition with the publisher's colophon on the copyright page and with 1929 on both title and copyright page is in Very Good condition. The author details the rather diabolical reign of Louis XI and shows how in his spider-like web he managed to accrue and strengthen his power over every social and political aspect of French life. The book is bound in a warm brown cloth with a blind-stamped spider design on the front panel and die-stamped gilt titles on the front panel and spine. There is rubbing at the spine tips as well as a bite mark probably from a dog measuring about 1 1/4 inches at the very top of the rear panel which does not affect the interior. The binding is secure and the text pages are clean and bright. There are 12 illustrations including a frontis portrait of the king. Some illustrations have unattached tissue guards. The book measures 6 1/4 by 9 1/4 inches and includes 501 pages with appendices. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Coward McCann Hardcover‎
