This third issue variant has for the first time the two line quotation from Hamlet. Wise I 123 Randolph Studies for a Byron bibliography. An essential for the Byron collector this copy has no inscriptions.</i></p><p><i>A failing marriage and his incestuous affair saw Byron bolt in 1816 to Switzerland in June after his sojourn in May with Pryce Gordon at Waterloo never to return. The "year without a summer" saw the Geneva Circle including Byron the Shelleys and John William Polidori entertain themselves telling German ghost stories while the unrelenting rain fell that June. In August Monk Lewis visited and translated passages from Faust. Here the ghost story competition was proposed: from it followed Frankenstein The Vampyre and Manfred. Set in ancient Nineveh and recounting the fall of the Assyrian monarchy and its supposed last king Sardanapalus draws its story mainly from the Historical Library of Diodorus Siculus and from William Mitford's History of Greece. Byron wrote the play during his stay in Ravenna and dedicated it to Goethe. Demy 8vo; half-title not called for; integral advertisement leaf at end; pp.xvi257i printer’s imprintii. Contemporary full calf gilt contrasting lettering-pieces. Spine rubbed and a little chipped boards worn at the corners and detached; a little scattered light foxing but text in general nice. Two parts in one volume. ‘Canto the Third’ is an apparently unrecorded later state of Wise’s first issue. v. Wise I p.56; Randolph pp.59-60. In this copy the quotation on the title-page is three and a half inches wide as in Wise’s second issue but the ‘L’ of ‘Lettre’ falls under the ‘l’ of ‘celui’ instead of the ‘u’ the exclamation mark is absent at the end of the first line of the second stanza and the last line ends correctly ‘prevail.’ the ‘l.’ of which was dropped in some presumably early copies after the correction was made whilst the fifth line of the note on p.67 has the incorrect reading ‘Eagle’ instead of ‘Falcon’: all points characteristic of the first issue. The fourth canto not in Randolph agrees with Wise’s second issue throughout: p.155 ending “Esortazione†not “the impressions of†as in the first issue and signatures ‘P’ and ‘Q’ being so signed rather than ‘P’ and ‘Q’ as in Wise’s third issue and carrying the original text p.217 having two footnotes instead of the later three and p.218 beginning “the other†rather than “says Lipsius†the five line errata which was reduced to three lines in the fourth issue and cancelled altogether in the fifth issue here appearing on p.236.
