Publisher's red ribbed cloth border ornamentation blocked in blind to boards. Pictorial designs and titles in gilt to upper and spine. All edges gilt. Yellow coated endpapers. Publisher's advertisements to rear. Lightly toned throughout; basically clean but for a small adhesive stain to pp.175 and some faint spotting to rear flyleaf recto. A couple light pencil notes to front endpaper. Toning to cloth two very small black ink flecks to upper and one to lower. Effectively re-spined. Gentle edgewear. A bright crisp copy. Very good. The fourth of Dickens' Christmas novellas published first as books rather than in serial. The story is the only one in the series that doesn't involve the supernatural. Instead it bears resemblance to an Austenesque romance. This copy possesses the rare second state engraved title-page differentiated from the three other designs by the position and lettering of the 'A Love Story' at the bottom. Publisher's original red horizontally ribbed cloth with front board ruled and decoratively bordered in-blind and a central detailed gilt stamped image of one cherubic figure mounted upon a dragonfly descending sprigged love-lance aloft upon another cherub mounted upon her own dragonfly/and gilt lettering to spine. Gilt cherubs mounted upon dragonflies to spine as well which itself shows rebacking with original spine cloth laid down. Some light and some faded spots to boards nudged corners fading gilt after 179 years and a slight spine lean - a well loved and apparently read and re-read early appearance of this fourth Christmas book of Charles Dickens. All edges gilt. <br /> <br /> Fourth and most common state of Dickens's fourth book in his 5-book Christmas series. Engraved title page shows Cupid holding the banner "The Battle of Life" with small winged cherub below and no publisher's information. This title of particular interest due to the issue of four states of the first edition. A Very Good copy. <br /> <br /> An exceedingly rare survival by all appearances an unrecorded publisher's presentation morocco binding. We have been unable to trace another example at auction or in commerce. While there are extant copies of most of Dickens' published works in presentation or deluxe bindings we cannot trace another example of a Christmas book in this form. The original cover illustrations of the trade edition have been produced here in the same form. <br /> <br /> The Battle of Life was the fourth of the Christmas books and one of the lesser known works from the series. It centers on two sisters Grace and Marion who must contend with shared romantic attachments. After Marion disappears with a presumed libertine Michael Warden the family struggles to make sense of her sudden departure. But in standard Dickensian fashion the plot twists get resolved and happiness prevails for everyone. <br /> <br /> The Christmas books are outliers in terms of their publication history when compared to other Dickens works as they were first published in this form rather than in serial parts. It was first published on December 19 1846 and priced at 5 shillings however it is certain the present copy would have cost more due to the deluxe binding. The work is illustrated throughout with four contributions by Daniel Maclise three by Richard Doyle three by Clarkson Stanfield and three by John Leech. Very Good . Bradbury & Evans unknown

This is an unusual tale in which two sisters love the same man both ultimately settling in with him though only one is married to him -- according to Thackeray "a wretched affair." It is in fact quite autobiographical: Dickens loved Mary Hogarth married her sister Catherine and then was happy to have his household run by their sister Georgina. This copy has the vignette title page in the fourth and usual state Todd's state E1 with an angel holding the banner and with no publisher's imprint; in our experience at least 90% and perhaps 95% of the copies encountered are of this state. This is a bright near-fine copy with very little wear; atypically the original delicate endpapers are not cracked the front paste-down bears the bookplate of the late Chicago professor Thomas S. One of Charles Dickens's lesser known Christmas books. The Battle of Life: A Love Story is a novella by Charles Dickens 1st published in 1846. It's the 4th of his five "Christmas Books" coming after The Cricket on the Hearth followed by The Haunted Man & the Ghost's Bargain. The setting is an English village that stands on the site of a historic battle. Some characters refer to the battle as a metaphor for the struggles of life hence the title. Battle is the only one of the five Christmas Books that has no supernatural or explicitly religious elements. One scene takes place at Christmas time but it isn't the final scene. The story bears some resemblance to The Cricket on the Hearth in two aspects: it has a non-urban setting & it's resolved with a romantic twist. It's even less of a social novel than is Cricket.
