Forster was a writer and journalist and a notable figure in mid 19th century literary London. Through his friendship with the influential editor Leigh Hunt he became adviser agent and proofreader not only to Dickens but to many leading writers of the day. Forster was not merely the friend of the great man; he was a highly experienced journalist by the time he began to write the biography and his experience as a writer as well as his breadth of familiarity and knowledge of the subject and the writing shows absolutely throughout this prodigious work.
