The CRICKET On The HEARTH. A Fairy Tale of Home
London: Printed and Published for the Author by Bradbury & Evans 1846. 1st edition with 2nd state of the OT advert Eckel p. 119; Smith II 6. Original publisher's red cloth binding with gilt stamping to front board & spine. AEG. Pale yellow eps. Bright gilt. Slight lean. Very minor wear. A handsome VG copy. 8 174 2 pp. Advert last 2 pp. 14 illustrations by Leech et al. 8vo. 6-3/4" x 4-3/16" <br/><br/>Cricket was Dickens' 3rd Christmas book debuting 20 December 1845 and quickly requiring 2 additional editions. The story one of allaying a husband's suspicions when he sees his young wife talking with another gentleman; said suspicions laid to rest by the work's supernatural agent the Cricket. While not capturing the public's favor as did his initial foray into Christmas novellas with Christmas Carol "Andrew Sanders has argued that it has key similarities to Shakespearean comedy and should be seen 'both as a significant indication of the tastes of the 1840s and Dickens himself.'" as quoted by Schlicke in the Reader's Companion to Dickens p. 124. DICKENS Charles
The Cricket on the Hearth: A Fairy Tale of Home.
Guildford: Genesis Publications 1981. First edition of the manuscript in facsimile. One of 250 copies signed by Dickens' great granddaughter Monica Dickens. Unpaginated and predominantly on rectos. Publisher's crimson morocco with gilt illustration on front board gilt spine lettering marbled endpapers all edges gilt red cloth slipcase. Except for a small snag on the upper spine a lovely copy."To twentieth-century readers A Christmas Carol has long seemed to be not merely the best but the only Christmas book by Charles Dickens. In fact the custom of a Christmas tribute whether a book story or a special number of Household Words or All the Year Round was one that Dickens faithfully maintained for over a quarter of a century sometimes alone sometimes in collaboration. And nearly every year the task of writing his Christmas contribution crept up on him before he was quite ready. Though 1845 was exceptional by virtue of the fact that Dickens had no major novel underway at the time. For the first time this important document is reproduced in facsimile enabling the reader to see the many deletions and alterations made by Dickens to the script. An introduction has been added by Andrew Sanders and Verlyn Klinkenborg has contributed a note on the manuscript. Nine of the engravings from the first printed edition are included in this volume" Genesis. Genesis Publications hardcover

Dickens Charles
The Cricket on the Hearth A Fairy Tale of Home
London: W.S. Johnson "Nassau Steam Press 1845. Rare Pamphlet Play issued a year before the book was published. Stated on Title page: Dramatization by Albert Smith Esq. from early proofs of the works by the express permission of the author CHARLES DICKENS ESQ. and performed at the Theatre Royal Lyceum. Original binding softcover with stitched wrappers. 39 pages. VERY VERY RARE. It came from my late Grandfather's Christmas Collection. Always happy to send detailed photographs. Dickens's interest in the theater dated from his late teens. In 1845 he began to produce for the stage himself an interest which would lead eventually to his own touring company. In October and November of 1845 as he drafted Cricket he was secretly collaborating with well-known dramatist Albert Smith on an authorized script. It would appear that he gave Smith the proofs of the novel to read and possibly attended secret rehearsals with Smith's cast. This two-pronged effort to beat the pirates at their own game was partially successful. The novel was released in London on the same day the play opened at the Lyceum. Playbills pointedly identified Smith's Cricket as being written "from Early Proofs of the Work BY THE EXPRESS PERMISSION OF THE AUTHOR." The Cricket on the Hearth was published in 1846. However before publication Dickens joined forces with the playwright Albert Smith and the famous acting pair Mr. and Mrs. Keeley of the Lyceum Theatre to produce a stage version from early proof sheets of the book. The result was The Cricket on the Hearth A Fairy Tale of Home Dramatized by Albert Smith and dated 1845. The cast included Mr. Keeley as Caleb Plummer and Mrs. Keeley as Dot. The play was a huge success. Smiths original version at the Lyceum had over sixty performances. . Original Wraps. Very Good. W.S. Johnson, "Nassau Steam Press Paperback
