‎DICKENS Charles.‎

‎The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1839. The copy of his friend William Henry Wills Octavo 213 x 134 mm. Original purple half morocco spine lettered in gilt marbled sides and endpapers. Engraved portrait frontispiece 39 engraved plates by Phiz. Light rubbing skilfully retouched small chip at head of spine some browning to plates and title page. A very good copy. First edition in the publisher's deluxe binding of half morocco. Following the serialization in parts Dombey and Son was issued in book-form in cloth full morocco and the present half morocco. The deluxe bindings of Dickens have been somewhat marginalized by bibliographers but it is certainly the case that they are significantly scarcer than the cloth issues. Dickens had been catapulted to fame with the success of The Pickwick Papers and to secure his next novel Chapman and Hall offered Dickens £150 a part a sum ten times greater than that which he had received for Pickwick. It met with great public enthusiasm which has continued unabated: Dickens's biographer Ackroyd stated that the novel "has some title to being the funniest novel Dickens ever wrote; it is perhaps the funniest novel in the English language" Peter Ackroyd Dickens pp. 262. This copy has a particularly nice association with the bookplate to the front pastedown of Charles Dickens's friend the British playwright journalist and newspaper editor William Henry Wills 1810-1880. Wills began his friendship with Dickens in 1846 when he worked as sub-editor of The Daily News under Dickens's editorship and afterwards invested in and worked for Dickens's Household Words and All the Year Round. "In addition to this increasingly close business relationship Wills and Dickens became good friends with Wills serving as a highly trusted confidant. Dickens went so far as to entrust Wills with the transmission of his letters to his mistress Ellen Ternan during Dickens's 1867–8 American reading tour. As Dickens had put it on 2 January 1862: 'I think we can say that we doubt whether any two men can have gone on more happily and smoothly or with greater trust or confidence in one another' Letters 10.2. It is significant that his friendship with Wills was 'one of the few unbroken relationships Dickens experienced in his lifetime' Spencer 145" ODNB. Also with the bookplate to the front free endpaper of Sir William Overend Priestley 1829-1900 British physician and Conservative Member of Parliament for Edinburgh and St Andrews Universities from 1896 to 1900. Eckel pp. 64-5; Smith 5. Also see Lars Kremers "A Comparative Bibliography of the Sheets and Publishers' Cloth Cases of the Demy Octavo Works of Charles Dickens 1837-1872" PhD thesis Curtin University November 2013. The oft-cited textual points apply only to the parts with the corrections made by the time of the book-form edition. London: Chapman and Hall, hardcover‎

‎The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1839. First edition of one of Dickens' most popular novels. Octavo bound in full morocco by Morrell ornate inlay to the spine front and rear panels raised bands inner dentelles illustrated with 40 plates. In fine condition. Housed in a custom slipcase. An exceptional presentation. In 1867 Charles Dickens began his second American reading tour at Boston's Tremont Temple where an enthusiastic audience delighted in some of his most notable works members of the audience included legendary literary stars such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Although Dickens was in declining health he embarked on an ambitious travel schedule across the United States. Dickens returned to Boston once more before concluding his U.S. tour in New York City. When Charles Dickens arrived in Boston on November 19 1867 the celebrated English author spent several days at the Parker House hotel recuperating from the voyage. As conscientious a performer as he was a writer Dickens had prepared diligently for his performances redrafting and memorizing key passages from his books especially for these engagements. He used a book only as a prop; he was so familiar with the material that he could improvise with ease. However during his 1867-1868 tour he was plagued with Flu-like symptoms insomnia and an inflammation of his foot which forced him to walk with a cane. During his last tours in 1868 Dickens confined much of his performances to the New England area. Dickens was grateful for the income he desperately needed from his readings which generated $140000 close to $2000000 today; but he longed for home. On April 8 1868 Dickens gave the last performance of the tour. Prolonged applause followed the reading. He closed by telling the audience "In this brief life of ours it is sad to do almost anything for the last time. Ladies and gentlemen I beg most earnestly most gratefully and most affectionately to bid you each and all farewell." He died two years later having written 14 novels several of which are considered classics of English literature. Chapman and Hall hardcover‎

Publisher's original olive green fine-diaper cloth covers framed in blind with triple rule enclosing inner blind-stamped frame of chain-like design ornament of stems and leaves in corners identical to cloth covers of primary binding of Dombey and Son; spine ruled in five panels lettered in gilt to second and fourth; coated pale yellow end papers; edges rough- trimmed. Armorial book plate of A. G. W. Skirrow modified in manuscript by W. A. Telford to front paste down. An unusually clean copy both pages and plates in well-preserved original decorative cloth binding spine toned to a pleasing brown. A most attractive copy in the same format as the first edition. OCLC 19920519. Reprint from plates of the first book edition first published 1839. Dickens's fifth published novel originally issued in 19 monthly parts the final part a double number. Writing it he attempted to create something more ambitious than either the Pickwick Papers or Oliver Twist. The novel has a comparatively simple structure but in the manner of older novels that Dickens admired such as Fielding's Joseph Andrews it has a multiplicity of plots all of which in some way connect to the penniless young hero. Nickleby was an immediate success selling nearly 50000 copies earning profits of £14000 for the serial publication alone and attracting more notice than Dickens had previously received previously. N. B. With few exceptions always identified we only stock books in exceptional condition carefully preserved in archival removable polypropylene sleeves. ‎Dickens Charles‎

‎The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1839. First edition. Bound by Bayntun in three-quarter red calf over cloth boards all edges gilt. Spine a bid faded internally an excellent copy. Complete with the half-title and all 40 plates engraved by Phiz. Likely washed at the time of binding as most plates show little to no foxing. Most of Smith's internal flaws are found including the ones of pgs. 123 and 160 only found in the earliest copies bound from the parts. Nicholas Nickleby Dickens' third novel was originally serialized in monthly parts then issued as a book in cloth. The publishers also had a small number of copies bound up in the present morocco both for presentation - a census of copies inscribed by Dickens on publication show them all to be in the green morocco binding - and for sale to the public at a higher price. "Dickens' third novel has always been a favourite with the general public. Indeed it was the book's huge sales that enabled Dickens to give up parliamentary reporting and become a full-time writer. The theatricality of the novel attracted new and more appreciative critical attention and it demonstrates the inextricable link between public and private" Bannerjee. A satire tackling the injustices faced by both women and men within the Victorian class system that relied so heavily the social status of the patriarch the novel follows Nicholas Nickleby as he seeks to support his mother and sister after his father's death. When Nicholas' father dies after losing all of the family's money it is up to the young man to emerge as the new and more morally sound patriarch. Dashing and likable Nicholas ultimately prevails dodging shady characters along the way and securing a respectable life in Devonshire for his extended family. A favorite among Dickens' works Nicholas Nickleby has been adapted into a much-loved film. Chapman and Hall unknown‎
