‎Tale of Two Cities‎

‎First Edition First Issue of "A Tale of Two Cities" DICKENS Charles. BROWNE Hablot Knight illustrator. A Tale of Two Cities. With Illustrations by H.K. Browne. London: Chapman and Hall 1859. First edition first issue. With all eight of Smith's internal flaws necessary for the first issue present including page 213 misnumbered 113. Octavo 8 3/16 x 5 3/16 inches; 207 x 132 mm. x 1-254 pp. Sixteen inserted plates including frontispiece and engraved vignette title by Browne 'Phiz'. Without the publisher's catalog bound at the end. Half green morocco over green linen cloth boards bound by Bayntun. Spine stamped and lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Spine sunned to brown. Some occasional minor spots. Some light offsetting from plates. Plate facing page 150 with a closed one-inch tear. Overall a very good copy. A Tale of Two Cities was first serialized in Dickensís periodical All the Year Round from April 30-November 26 1859. Its appearance in monthly parts July-December 1859 and book form mark Dickensís return to his old publishers Chapman and Hall after a long stay with Bradbury and Evans. The extremely large audience for the novel in All the Year Round however left less than the usual demand for the parts issue and at first for the book both of which are now quite rare. This title also marks the authorís final collaboration with Phiz Dickensís most evocative and most sympathetic illustrator. Hatton and Cleaver 33lff. Smith I 13. ‎THE BATTLE OF LIFE‎

‎1846. A Love Story. London: Bradbury & Evans 1846. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in gilt.

First Edition of the fourth of Dickens's five illustrated Christmas books -- following A CHRISTMAS CAROL THE CHIMES and THE CRICKET ON THE HEARTH and preceding THE HAUNTED MAN. This is an unusual tale in which two sisters love the same man both ultimately settling in with him though only one is married to him -- according to Thackeray "a wretched affair." It is in fact quite autobiographical: Dickens loved Mary Hogarth married her sister Catherine and then was happy to have his household run by their sister Georgina. This copy has the vignette title page in the fourth and usual state Todd's state E1 with an angel holding the banner and with no publisher's imprint. In our experience at least 90% and perhaps 95% of the copies encountered are of this state. This is a bright attractive copy just about fine with only the faintest hint of wear at the very tips volume slightly askew as usual. The front endpaper bears the inked inscription "Ellen F. Lee from her father December 25 1846" -- Christmas Day six days after publication. Smith II pp 60-65; Podeschi Yale A116. unknown books‎

Tipped onto the advertisement leaf is a smaller leaf advertising "Monsieur Vlieland's Works" not described in Smith. A lovely Fine copy with some contemporary ownership markings at the front end papers otherwise an excellent copy both inside and out.

Dickens' fourth Christmas book and one of the lesser known books from the series. The Battle of Life centers on two sisters Grace and Marion who must contend with shared romantic attachments. After Marion disappears with a presumed libertine Michael Warden the family struggles to make sense of her sudden departure. But in standard Dickensian fashion the plot twists get resolved and happiness prevails for everyone. Fine. Bradbury & Evans unknown books‎

‎London: Bradbury and Evans 1846 Illustrated by Richard Doyle John Leech and several others. First edition fourth vignette title page. Finely bound in contemporary three-quarter tan calf over marbled boards spine lettered and decorated in gilt red speckled edges brown endpapers. A near fine copy with some rubbing to the board edges and covers early former owner bookplate to front pastedown. A very bright and attractive copy. The Battle of Life if the fourth book of five in Dickens' Christmas Books series and the only book to not have the religious or supernatural elements of the other books. Each novel in the Christmas Books series is marked by a strong moral and social message the transformation of a hardened character to a more caring individual and of course the holiday season. Unusual for Dickens all of The Christmas Books were published first as novels without prior serial publication. Additionally they are all illustrated in black and white with the exception of A Christmas Carol which contains plates with color illustrations. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine. ‎THE CHIMES‎

‎1845. A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year out and a New Year in. With Illustrations. Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard 1845. Original blue-grey cloth decorated in gilt.

First hardbound and fully-illustrated American edition -- preceded by only three days by E. Winchester's edition and by Harper's edition both of which were issued in wrappers and with one or no illustrations. "The L&B edition is almost an exact copy of the original English edition" with the same front cover decoration and with the same plates by John Leech Richard Doyle and others. The illustrations which in the English edition share pages with text were for this edition "extended" to occupy entire pages: "the work of the illustrations is very well done but it is doubtful if the changes have improved them any" quotes from Wilkins. This copy is bound in blue cloth; others are in yellowish-white or pink no priority. Curiously the binder's name "J.G. Russell Binder" appears in the lower margin of each cover's design. Condition is very good -- better than that externally as there is only minor soil and edge-wear. Unfortunately for the text pages a very cheap paper was employed such that today those leaves are heavily browned. This does not apply to the plates however which are quite white and bright. Smith pp 55-58 his illustrations are of THIS copy; Podeschi Yale A88; Wilkins p. 37. Provenance: penciled signature of bibliographer Walter Smith on the front endpaper where resides as well an inked 1851 gift inscription. unknown books‎
