THE HAUNTED MAN and THE GHOST'S BARGAIN
1848. A Fancy for Christmas-Time. London: Bradbury & Evans 1848. 2 pp preliminary undated ads. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in gilt all page edges gilt.

First Edition of the fifth and last of Dickens's illustrated Christmas books none had been published in 1847 when he had been busy working on DOMBEY AND SON. This is the tale of Redlaw the chemist who makes a pact with his "evil genius" to remove all of his memories only to be saved in the end by his guiding angel. The book is illustrated by John Leech John Tenniel and others. In this copy the first page numeral on p. 166 is damaged -- which though priority is uncertain is the only identifiable issue point of this book. This is a near-fine copy spine slightly faded just a touch of wear at the spine corners; atypically the original delicate endpapers are intact. The front free endpaper bears the inked inscription "Ellen F. Lee from her father December 25 1848" -- Christmas Day six days after publication. Smith II pp 66-70; Podeschi Yale A119. unknown books

The HAUNTED MAN And The GHOST'S BARGAIN. A Fancy for Christmas-Time
London: Bradbury & Evans 1848. Cloth. VG- with the lightest of wear to the cover tips. Wear tpo extreme top of spine cloth. Light soiling and age-toning here and there. The ffep appears to have possibly been removed as advertising leaf is the first sheet when the book is opened but the joint where the front pastedown ends and the edge extends as the inner hinge and then onto the advertising sheet is mysteriously straight and glued with no cut marks or indentations onto the advertising sheet leading one to suppose there never was a ffep in this copy. 1' crack to the top area of the inner hinge. Red gilt-embossed cloth with ornate design on cover center and also along the spine. All edges gilt. 8 188 pp. Advertising leaf printed on both sides precedes engraved frontispiece and additional title on toned grounds by Martin & Corbould after John Tenniel wood-engraved illustrations by Martin & Corbould Thomas Williams Smith & Cheltnam and Dalziel by the following Artists: Tenniel 5 Leech 5 Stone 3 & Stanfield 3 Measures 6.75" high and 4.5" wide. The gilt on this copy is bright both on the cover and the spine. The ffep issue is vexing. Sold with all faults if any exist. A very nbice copy overall with nice shelf appeal. This is the fifth and last of Dickens's illustrated Christmas books. In this copy the first page numeral on p. 166 is damaged. This though priority is uncertain is the only identifiable issue point of this book. Smith II pp 66-70. Bradbury & Evans unknown books

Dickens Charles
The Life and Adventures of MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT
1844. With Illustrations by Phiz. New-York: published by Harper & Brothers 1844. 2 preliminary pages of undated ads. Original vertically-ribbed blind-stamped purple-brown cloth. Very early American edition second by five days. While the UK edition was being published in 20-in-19 monthly serial parts Harper published the novel in seven serial parts six consisting of three UK parts each followed by the seventh consisting of Part 19/20 -- issued irregularly between March 1843 and July 1844. Harper's final part was issued on July 22nd and three days later the 25th they came out with the same leaves bound in cloth as here priced at $1.00 -- containing the same 14 plates in seven facing pairs as had appeared serially. But J. Winchester of New York after running the novel serially in his monthly "The New World" magazine came out with his edition bound in wrappers and with no illustrations on July 20th -- priced at just 25 cents which Winchester proudly proclaimed to be "the cheapest novel ever issued from the press." MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT in Harper's seven actual wrappered parts is now exceedingly rare -- according to a Harper employee "the sale of the work in numbers was chiefly by newsboys on the street." Harper's book edition did not sell well -- partly because its price was four times Winchester's price but also because the American public did not care for Dickens's criticisms of America in his recent AMERICAN NOTES and in the early chapters of MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT. This copy is in the secondary binding state used for leaves not yet bound up at year-end by which time copies were being sold for 75 or 50 cents: it is identical to the first except that the date at the foot of the spine reads 1845 rather than 1844. Condition is very good minor wear at the binding extremities short tear at the top of the rear joint light cover soil. Smith pp 199-206; Podeschi Yale A74 disbound; Wilkins p. 24. unknown books
