Three volume set in original publisher's cloth each complete with half-titles and engraved frontispieces by F. W. Topham; original tissue plate-guards remain intact. Dated 1852 1853 and 1854 each volume is the First edition first issue. Vol. I has "Christmas 1851" printed on the dedication page and no page number printed on page xi. Vol. I: xii 210 pages of text; Vol. II: viii 214 pages; viii 321 pages. Each volume has an additional page of publisher's advertisements following the final page of text. The ads in the first two volumes do not include "A Child's History of England" in the list of works available. Bound in reddish-brown blind stamped publisher's cloth titled and decorated in gilt with pictorial gilt front board center decoration. The spines are slightly to moderately browned with sun-fading and the boards have minor bumping to the corners and minor soiling and small spots of staining. Minor foxing mainly affecting the first and final several pages of text and a few preliminary or final pages with tiny spots of staining/discoloration to the edges. The original slipcase near fine with a little toning and faint spot a little rubbing to the paper at the corners and edges but still strong solid and very attractive. FIRST EDITION AND LIMITED EDITION SIGNED BY ILLUSTRATOR ARTHUR RACKHAM. This was Dickens’ second installment in the “Christmas Books†series and his labors in creating THE CHIMES were “very arduous†in order to make it a worthy successor to A CHRISTMAS CAROL. It is also the second Christmas installment to receive Rackham's masterly touch. The subject is laid out at the start: 'In the first volume of Mr. Dickens' Life just published I read an account of Mr. DICKENS' literary connexion with my father which it is impossible for me to leave without remark. The biographer therein presents my father in a character which all who knew him would repudiate as belonging to him. I should mention that on my father's death his papers coming into my possession I made overtures through a mutual friend of Mr. FORSTER and myself for the destruction of any letters that bore reference to a former disagreement between Mr. DICKENS and my father. . My application to Mr. FORSTER was without result and Mr. FORSTER professed not to understand the meaning of the application itself.' Describes the 'succession of agreements' between Dickens and Bentley 'every one of which was more in favour of Mr. DICKENS than the last - a conclusive proof at whose instigation they had been changed'. Dickens' telling tale of father and son father and daughter - when the fifth instalment appeared Thackeray - himself in the middle of serialising "Vanity Fair" - exclaimed "There's no writing against such power as this - no one has a chance! Read that chapter describing young Paul's death: it is unsurpassed - it is stupendous". This copy exhibits the dropped "if" on p.426 - a point of no proven significance any more than all the other errors and minor variations said to indicate a mythical "first issue" - in particular the depiction of Captain Cuttle's hook on the wrong arm in the title-page vignette. There are no copies depicting it on the correct arm. See the "Not Peevish" post on the "Bookhunter on Safari" blog December 20th 2013. Demy 8vo 210 x 131mm. xvi624pp. Etched frontispiece extra-title and thirty-eight plates by "Phiz" H. K. Browne. The picture is good representation of the outside of the books. Natural aging bumped corners but still very much intact. All the titles listed as Good/Fair condition are clean on the inside and very readable. The few titles listed as Poor condition have loose blocks of pages but still readable. I was unable to determine if this is a complete set my best guess is no which went into consideration of pricing. All in all a collectible set from one of the world's most famous authors that would look great on anyone's bookshelves.</p> Macmillan and Company hardcover
