<p><strong>Finely illustrated edition of '<em>The Cricket on the Hearth</em>' 1845 in Russian. </strong>One of 4 000 copies published.</p><p>Cover vignettes and five full-page woodcuts were created by graphic artist <strong>Aleksey Kravchenko</strong> 1889–1940 renowned as a master of woodcut. He studied at Simon Hollosy's art school in Munich and at the Moscow School of Painting Sculpture and Architecture under Konstantin Korovin and Valentin Serov.<br />Russian artists first illustrated Dickens' works at the end of the 19th century. In the 1920s a new generation of Russian graphic artists known for their avant-garde approach revisited Dickens and prepared illustrated editions of '<em>Great Expectations</em>' Mitrokhin and Budogoskii 1929 and 1935 '<em>Hard Times</em>' Favorsky 1933 and '<em>The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club</em>' Milashevskii 1933. Aleksey Kravchenko was among the pioneers of this movement.<br />The translator's name is not specified in the book; however the translation by Maria Shishmareva 1852–1939 is published here from the 7th volume of '<em>The Works of Charles Dickens</em>' 1894.</p><p>We couldn't trace any copy via OCLC.</p><p><em><strong>Please be advised that certain books in our collection may require an export permit for international shipping. Very short tear to top of front flap crease and bottom of front panel and some tiny chips to three corners and head of spine. Edgewear and nicks - especially to spine ends and top of rear panel.
