Maria Beadnell the first love of the young Charles Dickens during the years 1830-1833 her father prevented the match became the model for Dora in DAVID COPPERFIELD; in 1855 she contacted him and they secretly met without their spouses but Dickens surprised at how much she had changed subsequently based the less-than-flattering Flora Finching of LITTLE DORRIT upon her. Forty inserted plates including frontispiece and vignette title. Collates nearly complete with almost all ads and slips as called for by Hatton and Cleaver with the rare fold-out ìLettsî ad in part VIII lacks slip after plates in part IX rear slip in part XII rear slip in part XIII front slip in part XVI lacks last page of last ads in part XIX-XX. This copy has seven specimen diary leaves in part VIII variant ads in parts XII 2A and XVIII Waterlow alternate on yellow paper. As in the Martin set the ìAdvertiserî Part VIII correctly reads ìLife of Goldsmithî instead of ìLile.î Original blue printed wrappers. All parts expertly rebacked. A few tiny frayed spots on corners. Some scattered foxing to text and plates. A small stain on front wrapper of Part III. Part VII opened a bit wide after plates but holding firm. Part X pages 5-6 of back advertisement torn with loss of half the page. Part XII pages 3-6 of back advertisement torn with loss of text from the ad. Part XV with text pages 471-474 bound in backwards but present. Part XVI with a tear to page 7 of the slip following the plates affecting text of the ad. Plates a bit tones mainly to the four in Part XIX-XX. Overall an attractive set. Housed in a quarter blue morocco slip case. Copperfield is one of the rarer titles in parts. Wanting the first volume. Second printing of the second volume with 'sporting' not split at end of line first American editions of volumes three through five. As with most extant sets assembled by a previous owner with differing pencil ownership signatures in a couple volumes. The first edition i.e. printing of the first volume is quite scarce having been issued in a printing of only 1500 copies. As the following volumes were published serially the first and second volumes were reprinted and one often finds mixed sets. As these volumes were set up and printed as the parts were received from London the text of four parts per volume a very sound case has been made most recently by Richard Loomis in his admirable catalogue of the McGuire collection that "it is.quite certain that four of the five Philadelphia volumes preceded the issuance of" the first British edition in book form.
