Expressive woodcut vignette on title a chamber pot and its contents. Occasional very light spotting else fine. 19th-century citron morocco sides gilt panelled spine gilt lettered longitudinally turn-ins gilt gilt edges pair of vellum flyleaves by Koehler with his signature on verso of front free endpaper. First Edition of a silly scatological spoof. Farts excrement latrines and their Rabelaisian synonyms provide characters' and place names and an endless supply of windy jokes in this ultimately tragic love tale. The hero Prince Croqu'Etron Sht-eater son of the sneaky Roi de Vesse Silent-But-Deadly-Fart falls in love with the lovely Princess Foirette Diarrhea daughter of his father's enemy the open-hearted Roi Petaut Loud Fart. Abetted by King Vesse's minister Constipati whose secret liaison with one of Foirette's governesses Lady Clisterine Enema makes him take the Prince's side Croqu'Etron persuades his father to replace war with dynastic marriage a gentler path to territorial aggrandizement. Love vanquishes all King Petaud gives Prince Croqu'Etron a handsome commode chair and the Kingdom of Caca finds peace but the newly married lovers meet their demise at the hands of the evil Prince Gadouard Manure who drowns them in vats of perfume and is punished by the king with the opposite fate being buried alive in you know what. This clever extended dirty joke complete with satirical preface and facetious printing permission dated from Laval 1 Sept. 1701 and a final selection of verses sung at the royal marriage at some point became associated with the fairy tale author Mlle. de Lubert ca. 1702-ca. 1779 whose style it appears to parody. Either through a misunderstanding or as a joke the book was even sometimes attributed to her notwithstanding both its contents and the date of the permission d'imprimer. This is the only 18th-century edition but the book's publishing history was garbled by Gay who describes two 18th-century editions dating the supposed first ca. 1701 based on the facetious permission and a second edition from ca. 1790; according to Gay only the second edition contains the section titled Contes et devis. which appear in this edition on pp. 56-64. Confused library cataloguers have thus dated this edition to ca. 1790. Its typography however points to an earlier date. Stanford University holds a manuscript of the text from the Phillipps collection with textual variants dated 1716. Reprints appeared in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. First edition of these parodies of ALICE. by the prolific journalist and miscellaneous writer written with the unspecified collaboration of M. H. Temple. Both are primarily political satires the product of frustrations about the Boer War and the British government of the time. Begbie went on to support pacifists and conscientious objection to the Great War and put himself out front with a vigorous defense of the reality of the supposed apparition of the Angel of Mons. (mm. 187x119), brossura originale (macchie al dorso; piccole manc. al piatto poster.), pp. XIII,(3),213,(3) con 1 tavola all'antiporta e 27 affascinanti tavole f.t., in litografia, dove sono raffigurati Garibaldi, Cavour, Pulcinella, e altri personaggi. Offriamo solo la prima parte dedicata all'Inferno (nel 1864 venne pubblicato il Purgatorio - il Paradiso non fu mai pubblicato) di questa operetta parodico-satirica di carattere politico. Francesco Plantulli, garibaldino di Avellino, poeta e combattente risorgimentale, animoso pubblicista e patriota ferventissimo, fu imprigionato nelle carceri borboniche, visse alcuni anni con Garibaldi a Caprera e morì nel manicomio di S. Onofrio a Roma. Nella "Nuova Divina Comedia" “riscrive completamente la prima cantica della ‘Commedia’ in forma satirica, sferzando l'intera scena politica italiana, dai Moderati ai Monarchici” (così Rossini A. “Palinsesti Danteschi”, Carabba, 2017). Filomeno Alessandroni, repubblicano, ex volontario garibaldino, scrisse per riviste umoristiche fra cui l'Arlecchino; fu direttore de “L'Arca di Noe'", "La Torre di Babele", "La Riscossa". Firma di appartenenza al frontespizio, altrimenti esempl. ben conservato, con barbe.

(volto femminile). Mancanza reintegrata, con poca perdita di testo. Timbri: Tenuta di Sensano - Propr. Viterbo, Monteriggioni, Colle Val d'Elsa. Il cantastorie Pietro Tenti è stato uno degli ultimi canzonettisti ambulanti, che servendosi di tipografie specializzate (Campi a Foligno, Marchi e Pelacani e Pennati a Firenzuola d'Adda, ecc.) stampavano le proprie composizioni e le diffondevano in mercati, fiere, sagre, o a mezzo posta. Raro.

Quest'opera fu anche attribuita (Melzi, Anonime e pseudonime, vol. 3, p. 156) al compositore Benedetto Marcello (che in effetti aveva pubblicato anonimo nel 1720 il libello satirico “Il Teatro alla Moda”). Nel 1738 era apparso il 6° ed ultimo volume della 4a edizione del Vocabolario della Crusca: questa parodia coeva mette alla berlina gli eccessi dei “puristi” della lingua.

La disanima storica e filologica del "pastiche", qualcosa di simile alla parodia ma più profondo, più aggressivo. Importante la bibliografia e davvero sorprendente per ampiezza ed accuratezza gli stralci esemplificativi. Alcuni spunti invero eclatanti. In perfetto stato, notevole e poco comune.

In-8° (20,5 x 13,6 cm), pp. 114, (2), legatura editoriale con sovraccoperta illustrata da disegno di Alberto Longoni. Lievissimi segni del tempo alla sovraccoperta, in particolare leggerissima ingiallitura nel bordo superiore e nella parte che ricopre il dorso del volume. Con venticinque disegni, in bianco e nero, nel testo, di Mirko Vucetich. Piccoli, lievissimi segni d'umido ai tagli di testa e davanti e, rari e quasi impercettibili, nel bordo esterno di poche pagine, molto lontano dal testo. Al recto della prima e al verso dell'ultima carta di guardia, nella parte interna non a contatto con le alette della sovraccoperta, leggerissimo alone color beige, di perfetta forma rettangolare, che si sviluppa in senso verticale rispetto alla pagina, della larghezza di 3,3 cm per 19,6 cm di altezza circa, probabilmente determinato, nel tempo, dalla reazione al contatto con le controguardie, fissate, in sede editoriale, con materiale adesivo ai contropiatti. Per il resto, esemplare fresco, molto ben conservato. Nella collana "Scritture". Seconda edizione in volume, la prima era apparsa nel 1952 per Neri Pozza. Dalle alette (nota di Cesare Garboli): "A una fase fiorentina, intermedia tra quella milanese dell'Adalgisa o della Cognizione, e quella romana del Pasticciaccio, risalgono le favole di Gadda: «ciò è picciole fave o vero minimissime favuzze o faville d'un foco sopr'a duo rocchietti stento e d'una manata di stipa, codeste nugae ove non è Francia né Spagna, né coturno tragico né penziere eccelso di filosafo». Scritte nel '39 «e di poi vi stetti insino a presso mezzo giugno il quaranta» e pubblicate in sparsi gruppi su un almanacco e due riviste del tempo («Il Tesoretto», «Campo di Marte» e «Corrente»), furono riunite in volume da Neri Pozza nel '52, accresciute da una Nota bibliografica che è piuttosto un racconto, un rivestimento grottesco, una suite di fragorosa comicità nel gusto di Gadda quando egli è in vena di parodiare la sintassi e l'ornato dell'antica lingua italiana, mentre in realtà sta beffandosi delle stupide cose moderne. Esiste accanto al Gadda grande «realista comico» e formidabile narratore manierista anche un Gadda forse minore, frammentarista, funambolo, toscaneggiante con la solita irriverenza ma anche allietato d'insolita luce naturale: un inchiostro quasi magico, ricco di sorprese e imprevisti fantastici, tra il proverbio e la meraviglia delle cose. Un inchiostro rimasto candido sotto lo spessore lussuoso dei giochi («Le parole sacre, vedute le labbra dell'autore, ne rifuggono. le cose sacre, veduto il cuore dell'autore, vi si fermano.») È questo, sempre stretto al realismo, insensibile ai falsi valori «poetici», sempre di penna feroce, il Gadda poeta delle favole, che convive coi suoi odi, le sue rabbie compresse, i suoi delirii d'ipocondriaco, col Gadda di lega goliardica, o d'esasperata ispirazione satirica".
