Song of the Eagle The Beer Story Original screenplay for the 1933 film producer Harry Joe Brown's presentation copy with stills and notations throughout
Hollywood: Paramount Pictures 1933. Draft script for the 1933 film "Song of the Eagle" seen here partially under the early working title "The Beer Story." Presentation copy belonging to uncredited producer Harry Joe Brown with his name in gilt titles to the front board presumably gifted to Brown by prop man William Carr as the script itself has Carr's ownership name in holograph pencil on the title page. Throughout the script are Carr's annotations accompanied by 17 black-and-white film stills on tipped-in leaves. Otto Hoffman Jean Hersholt and his sons Bill Richard Allen and August George Meeker own a successful brewery until August dies in World War I and Prohibition forces the brewery to close. The Hoffman's brew a "near-beer" beverage to keep the business out of bankruptcy but soon the brewery is overcome by gangsters and Otto is killed for refusing to sell out. Bill is forced to break the bad news to his mother Emma who in a fit of loss and rage kills the lead gangster. The script was written in early 1933 the same year Prohibition was repealed and the "near-beer" brewed by the Hoffman's foreshadows the 3.2 percent beer thought to be too low an alcohol concentration to be intoxicating and wine authorized for legal sale by the Cullen-Harrison Act signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on March 22 1933. The Twenty-first Amendment was fully ratified on December 5 1933 repealing Federal laws enforcing Prohibition. "Song of the Eagle" like the same year's "The Little Giant" with Edward G. Robinson would be one of the last films made about Prohibition before its repeal. Steelyard Blues Original screenplay for the 1973 film producer Tony Bill's copy
Burbank CA: Warner Brothers 1971. Final script for the 1973 film. Copy belonging to producer Tony Bill with his signature in black holograph ink at the top right corner: "Tony Bill director/producer." Included is a typed letter of provenance signed by Bill. The second pairing between Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland in which the two are members of a group of misfits seeking to fix up an amphibious plane in order to escape a society they find constricting. From Wikipedia: Fonda Sutherland and Boyle were active in anti-war activities when the film was made and as a result it did not receive wide release or much publicity. It remains memorable however for its oddball characters anti-establishment message and 1970s sensibilities. "Steelyard Blues" found a warm reception among college students and non-conformists. With a soundtrack by musicians Mike Bloomfield Paul Butterfield Nick Gravenites Maria Muldaur and others. Shot on location throughout California. In good condition some wear to edges as normal for age. Overall good copy of this scarce title. Excellent read. A good book to enjoy and keep on hand. About the author/editor : Myron Coureval Fagan 31 October 1887 - 12 May 1972 was an American writer producer and director for film and theatre and a red scare figure in the late 1940s and 50s. Fagan was an ardent anti-communist. In 1945 Fagan claimed he saw secret documents of the meetings in Yalta shown to him by author John T. Flynn that led him to write the plays Red Rainbow and Thieves Paradise. Written in 1945 Red Rainbow portrays Roosevelt Stalin and others in Yalta plotting to deliver the Balkans Eastern Europe and Berlin to Stalin. Left-wing groups in the New York opposed the production of the play and Fagan had difficulties getting financial backing to produce it. Fagan took the play to Hollywood where he encountered even more protests against it than he had in New York. ~ In the late 1940s Fagan launched a one-man crusade against what he claimed was a "Red Conspiracy in Hollywood". Out of this crusade would come the Cinema Education Guild. ~ In 1953 Red Rainbow was produced by Bruce Fagan and staged for 16 performances at the Royal Theatre between 14 September and 26 September. ~ Written two years later Thieves Paradise portrays the same group plotting to create the United Nations as a Communist front for one world government. ~ Despite opposition Thieves Paradise opened at the Las Palmas Theatre in Hollywood on December 26 1947. It starred Howard Johnson ho was subject to a campaign of harassment so bitter and intense that it sent him to St. Vincent's Hospital with a nervous breakdown after six performances and never made another movie in Hollywood.
