Realms Of Memory: The Construction Of The French Past-Volume 1.Conflicts &
New York. 1996. Columbia University Press. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Slightly Worn Dustjacket. ISBN:0231084048. English Language EditionEdited & With A Foreword by Lawrence D. Kritzman. Translated by Arthur Goldhammer. 651 pages. hardcover. FROM THE PUBLISHER - REALMS OF MEMORY is a monumental collective endeavor by Frances leading intellectuals exploring the cathedrals and palaces the rituals legends and episodes that form the landscape of French consciousness. The first volume Conflicts and Divisions reflects on symbols of political religious regional and generational difference that structure Frances self-definition. The book begins with the political clashes that have carved a path through French history and memory between Franks and Gauls French and foreigners Vichy and all other regimes. Contributors explore shifting conceptions of political meaning over centuries from the often irreverent portrayals of Gauls in such popular media as the Asterix comics to nostalgic reimaginings of pre-revolutionary France by modern ultranationalists. A second section analyzes sites and events of the religious conflicts that underlie French identity. The authors chronicle the manufacture of remembrance as seen in the Protestant festivals held each September to commemorate the persecution of Huguenots in the sixteenth-century Wars of Religion; and of the processes of forgetting witnessed in the assimilative tradition among French Jews that has hindered if not prevented rediscovery of a distinctively Jewish past and acknowledgments of the French legacy of anti-Semitism. Conflicts and Divisions concludes with a section on issues of time and place and analysis of the cleavages that separate Paris and province north and south and human generations as demarcated by such transformative years as 1789 and 1968. inventory #23073 ISBN: 0231084048. hardcover

Original Film Pressbook: Regeneration
Jacksonville FL: Norman Film Manufacturing Company 1923. Original pressbook for the 1923 film directed by Richard E. Norman. Norman a white man is best remembered for producing eight feature films between 1920-1928. In 1920 he purchased the bankrupt Eagle Film Studios complex in the East Arlington area of Jacksonville FL which would become the home of Norman Film Manufacturing Co. - one of the most sophisticated production facilities run by a "colored" film company. He found success making silent pictures never making the cross-over into the "talkies" and handled the distribution of his films throughout the South. Regeneration was a South Seas adventure film touted as "the first colored picture with a real sea story and a sex theme." Filmed with an all-colored cast starring Stella Mayo and produced with considerable expense at the time; the film notably featured a two-masted schooner that was set ablaze 7 miles out at sea. The Green-Eyed Monster Original one sheet poster for the 1919 silent film
Jacksonville FL: Norman Film Studios 1919. Original US one sheet poster for the 1919 silent film like all of the Norman Studio films featuring an all-African American cast and marketed to African-American movie theatres. Norman Studios produced eight silent films between 1915 and 1928 one of over 30 film studios that operated in Jacksonville Florida during this era. All but one of the Norman Studio films including "The Green-Eyed Monster" are now lost with the sole exception being "The Flying Ace" 1926. The advent of sound as well as the increasing centralization of filmmaking in Hollywood led to the studio ceasing production after "Black Gold" in 1928. The studio's facilities in Jacksonville were restored and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2016. The film's story centers on a passionate love triangle intercut with a vicious competition between two train companies to land a high-dollar mail contract. As with this poster Norman went to great lengths to advertise the expense of the film's action sequences including a rescue from burning car fist fights a pistol duel an abduction a locomotive chase and a violent train wreck that purportedly cost $80000. 27 x 41 inches. Rolled Very Good only. Norman Film Studios unknown

Norman Jewison director; Stirling Silliphant screenwriter; John Ball novel; Sidney Poitier Rod Steiger Warren Oates starring
In the Heat of the Night Original Film Pressbook
Beverly Hills CA: United Artists 1967. Original Pressbook for the 1967 film.

Sidney Poitier is a Philadelphia police detective recruited to help solve a murder in a small bigoted Mississippi town when he is accidentally implicated in the crime while passing through. The film dealt skillfully with the topic of race relations in the South during the Civil Rights movement and included a controversial scene in which a white actor Larry Gates slaps Poitier in the face at which point Poitier slaps him right back. It was said you could determine the racial makeup of a theater by their verbal reaction to the scene: cheers for a predominantly black audience or whispers for a predominantly white one.

Though set in the fictional town of Sparta Mississippi Poitier refused to travel below the Mason-Dixon Line so the film was shot largely in Illinois. Quincy Jones composed the soundtrack for the film. Winner of five Academy Awards including Best Picture and nominated for two others.

12 pages saddle stapled 13.25 x 18 inches.
