A Separate Peace Original screenplay archive for the 1972 film
Hollywood: Paramount Pictures 1971. Script archive built around the Revised First Draft script for the 1972 film. Copy belonging to Burt Bluestein with his name on the title page in holograph pencil and annotations throughout in holograph pencil and ink. Bluestein although not credited at the film's release was presumably involved with production design as indicated by the annotations concerning camera angles and props and his film credits as both assistant director and production manager. The script is accompanied by various interoffice pages like cast and crew lists emergency contact lists shooting schedules and interoffice memos including one discussing the film's hiatus and the possibility of Ron Talsky costume designer working with Otto Preminger during the hiatus. Between this script and the film's release dates Talsky did work for Preminger on his film "Such Good Friends" 1971. Based on Knowles' 1959 best-selling first novel. Two young teens Finny Heyl and Gene Stevenson consider the draft if it should happen and make their way through school during WWII. Shot on location in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Actor Heyl's only film credit. Title page present dated 1971 noted as FIRST DRAFT Revised with credits for novelist Knowles and screenwriter Segal. 163 leaves with last leaf of text being the tenth page of a shooting schedule. Various printing methods with a few manuscript and typed pages and yellow and pink revision pages throughout dated May 1971 yellow and two pages dated Jan 1971 pink. Based on E.G. Valens' 1966 book about Jill Kinmont Boothe a champion skier who at the age of 18 was involved in a near-fatal accident resulting in paralysis from the neck down. She would become a teacher of special education after rehabilitation and married a trucker named John Boothe in 1976. She was inducted into the National Ski Hall of Fame in 1967 and died in 2012. Director Peerce's notable film debut as director "One Potato Two Potato" 1964 was a groundbreaking drama about an interracial marriage and one of the first films to portray such a relationship. He would later marry and divorce Marilyn Hassett who plays Jill in the film she won a Golden Globe for her debut role. Beau Bridges costars as her love interest. Nominated for an Academy Award. Set in Bishop California shot on location throughout California. Blue titled wrappers noted as "Office Copy Cover" in ink on the front wrapper copy No. 74-1-82. With the stamp of photographer Lee Johnson on the verso. The beginning of the New Hollywood Cinema. Screenwriters Robert Benton and David Newman shopped their script about the notorious 1920s gangsters to every major American studio then to Francois Truffaut and then to Jean-Luc Godard all to absolutely no avail. A young and reckless Warren Beatty already an established Hollywood bad boy took an interest and brought on director Arthur Penn and for a rewrite screenwriter Robert Towne. According to legend Beatty begged Jack Warner on bended knee to green light the production after which the film barely got an initial release. Eventually due more to studio politics than interest in the film it received a general release due mostly to huge political upheavals at Warner Brothers whereupon it became a box office smash. 9.5 x 14 inches. Some say that the New Hollywood era began with "Bonnie and Clyde" in 1967 others say "Mickey One" in 1965. Either way you look at it the director was Arthur Penn. Beatty was not only the muse for Penn's avant-garde tale of a comic who runs afoul of the mob but also the crazed youngster who would get Penn assigned to Bonnie and Clyde and initiate the second golden age of cinema. Stan Getz laid improvisations onto the progressive and somewhat classical score for the film against the backdrop of a full orchestra. Set in Chicago and shot on location there. 8 x 10 inches. Private eye Harry Moseby Hackman an ex-pro football player is a workaholic with an unfaithful wife Clark. An aging actress hires Harry to find her daughter Delly Melanie Griffith her first starring role a runaway teen who's fled to Florida. While on the hunt Harry has an affair of his own with Paula Warren and he succeeds in locating Delly. Although his victory is not without consequences and a mysterious underwater plane wreck further complicates Harry's journey. An underrated key film for director Penn something of an intellectual thriller made between two better known films "Mickey One" 1965 and "Bonnie and Clyde" 1967. Also very much an acting tour de force with early performances by Robert Duvall Jane Fonda and Robert Redford and an exceptional turn by Brando as a town sheriff facing painful choices. The film itself was the subject of am acrimonious struggle for creative control between the director and studio coincidentally making the production mirror the themes of upheaval of the social order and the fight for freedom within the film story. Basis for the 1962 Robert Wise film starring Robert Mitchum and Shirley MacLaine nominated for two Academy Awards Best Cinematography Best Music and wonderfully shot in anamorphic black-and-white. The film is regarded as one of the best portrayals of the post-Beat pre-Warhol Factory New York scene. Black Studio Duplicating Service wrappers with a credit for playwright Gibson. Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox 1983. Original press kit for the 1973 music documentary chronicling David Bowie's final live performance as Ziggy Stardust. Included in the press kit are four vintage black and white film still photographs and 21 pages of production information. Shot on location with only four cameras in London's Odeon theater on July 3 1973 the film witnesses Bowie's final performance as Ziggy Stardust. It would remain unreleased save a scant handful of partial screenings for another ten years as the audio recordings from the event were so poor that the filmmakers did not want to use them. Only in the early 1980s did Bowie rerecord a number of post-production tracks when he felt that he had finally put enough distance between himself and his Ziggy Stardust persona. 21 pages of production information corner stitched 8.5 x 11 inches. Photographs 8 x 10 inches. Stills and production information have a single soft crease else Fine housed in a Near Fine glossy full color studio folder. Twentieth Century-Fox unknown
