‎Proces de Jeanne d'Arc The Trial of Joan of Arc Framed Poster under Plexiglass 167 x 126 cm‎

‎Paris: Pathe; Pilote Publicite; Affiches Gaillard 1962. First Edition. Framed Poster. Very Good. Lithograph poster framed under plexiglass. Halftone color. Extremely large; 167 x 126 cm 63 x 47 inches. Minor discoloration along bottom margin. Please contact us about shipping rates prior to ordering. This is a very large poster that will require additional shipping charges. <br> Bresson's film received the Special Jury prize at Cannes Festival 1962. "A minimal and austere telling of the story of Joan of Arc's trial and execution. Bresson's shortest feature film is a wonderful example of his evolution towards a stripped-down essentialist aesthetic style. As in all of his films here Bresson attempts to go beyond the surface to the soul of his subject and in The Trial of Joan of Arc he achieves this goal with a film that reveals a great deal about human nature and particularly the resilience of the human spirit. ‎Adler Harold letterer; Francis Ford Coppola director; EY. Harburg Fred Saidy playwrights screenwriters; Fred Astaire Petula‎

‎Finian's Rainbow Archive of original title card maquettes for the 1967 film‎

‎Burbank CA: Warner Brothers / Seven Arts 1967. Four title card maquettes hand lettered by Harold Adler for the 1967 film. Based on the 1947 musical by E.Y. Harburg and Fred Saidy who also adapted the story to the screen. The four maquettes in this archive are stylistically similar but quite different from the titles used in the finished film. Harold Adler was a calligrapher who created hand lettered titles on over 100 films worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock and was a favorite of legendary title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In addition to "Finian's Rainbow" his credits include "Comanche!" 1956 "The Man with the Golden Arm" 1955 "The Seven Year Itch" 1955 "Carmen Jones" 1954 "Psycho" 1960 "The Birds" 1963 "In the Heat of the Night" 1967 and "Justine" 1969. In 2012 an exhibition of Adler's work was organized by noted typographer and design historian Jill Bell at the American Advertising Federation Kansas City. Warner Brothers optioned the musical shortly after its premiere in 1947 but Harburg and Saidy were unwilling to tone down the racial satire to fit studio demands holding out until the option was about to expire and Warner agreed to a script with only minimal changes twenty years later. Coppola was an odd choice to direct with his realistic New Hollywood Cinema approach to filmmaking at odds with the fantastical nature of the material and the results were decidedly mixed despite a widely-loved performance by Clark. Each study 16 x 8 inches containing a reproduction of a color landscape photograph mounted on board and matted in black with two plastic overlays - one with white lettering and the second with color embellishments to the letters attached to the top of the mats with tape. Very Good plus condition overall. Hirschhorn p. 392. Warner Brothers / Seven Arts unknown‎

‎The Birds Archive of original title card maquettes for the 1963 film‎

‎Universal City CA: Universal Pictures 1986. Archive of three title card maquettes hand lettered by Harold Adler for the 1963 film. Also included are two fascinating autograph letters both elaborately designed and executed in a calligraphic style from Adler to author illustrator and editor Fridolf Johnson relating to Adler's work with Hitchcock. Harold Adler was a calligrapher who created hand lettered titles on over 100 films worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock and was a favorite of legendary title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In addition to "The Birds" 1963 his credits include "Comanche!" 1956 "The Man with the Golden Arm" 1955 "The Seven Year Itch" 1955 "Carmen Jones" 1954 "Psycho" 1960 "In the Heat of the Night" 1967 and "Justine" 1969. In 2012 an exhibition of Adler's work was organized by noted typographer and design historian Jill Bell at the American Advertising Federation Kansas City. In the first letter dated May 16 1986 Adler describes after touching on other topics meeting Hitchcock and then presenting him with layout ideas for the titles. He then goes into detail regarding his answer to a question about the techniques of artist Eric Gill stating that Hitchcock "was amazed" by this answer and after that would "request 'to be sure to bring that nice young man along" meaning Adler whenever he had a job for Adler's firm. The second letter dated June 10th 1986 focuses almost exclusively on Adler's work on "The Birds" going into some detail regarding both the creative and technical processes of producing hand lettered titles for films. He also describes Hitchcock as "an unusual person to work with. He was a master at what he did knew what he wanted and smoked the finest cigars." He then concludes the letter with some brief remarks on how his approach to title lettering evolved over the course of his career. The letters themselves are works of art executed in a variety of inks in Adler's detailed penmanship with Johnson's name on each in particular receiving full calligraphic treatment. Also included are draft title cards for the film stylistically similar to each other but much different from the titles used in the finished film. Two of the cards are marked as "camera ready" in holograph colored pencil with titles executed in white paint on black board. The third card photo stat on black paper which accompanied the June 10th letter has been annotated by Adler on both the recto and verso explaining the in more detail the technical process of putting the lettering on film. Overall a significant collection of material illuminating a little explored aspect of film design with a direct and significant connection to a seminal work by a director known for personally overseeing all aspects of production. ‎Hallelujah Die Hugel Hallelujah the Hills Original German poster for the 1963 film‎

‎Munich: Peter-Presse / Atlas Films 1965. Original 1965 German A1 poster for the 1963 US film. Designed by Heinz Edelman<br/><br/>From the collection of noted film historian Amos Vogel. Full provenance available. <br/><br/>An iconoclastic utterly American underground film best understood by way of the reactions it receives from viewers outside the US. Time Out Guide notes: "a highpoint from the 'innocent' years of American underground cinema and something of an enduring delight for real film buffs. Mekas' comedy starts from an enthusiastic parody of French 'new wave' concepts like using two actresses to play one character and manages to go on to incorporate references part satire part homage to what seems like every other branch of cinema extant . from samurai movies to Chaplinesque slapstick.hitting the intended tone between love and skepticism."<br/><br/>Jean-Luc Godard: "Next to the two big shots of the New York School Clarke and Cassavetes Mekas seemed a poor relative especially since people got him confused with his brother Jonas Mekas. 'Hallelujah the Hills' proves clearly that Adolfas is someone to be reckoned with. He is a master in the field of pure invention that is to say in working dangerously 'without a net. His film made according to the good old principle "one idea for each shot" has the lovely scent of fresh ingenuity and crafty sweetness. Physical efforts and intellectual gags are boldly put together. The slightest thing moves you and makes you laugh: a badly framed bush a banana stuck in a pocket a majorette in the snow. He shows life as defined by Ramuz: 'As with a dance such pleasure to begin a piston a clarinet such sorrow to be done the head spins and night has come.'"<br/><br/>23 x 33 inches non-archivally mounted on board. Pictorial self-wrapper with a drawing of a stage stapled at top edge. Illustrated with photographs. Staples rusted some damp discoloration and erosion at lower right edge but with all faults a good copy. First and only edition of this promotional in a format suitable for service as a prompt book as well featuring an unattributed poem accompanied by photographs of young African American children involved in theatrical rehearsals and productions -- with the single exception of one photograph of a young African American male walking through an alley behind row houses accompanying the lines: "And as these eager players / Leave their cramped and dreary rooms / Shedding footprints in the street's debris .". The Philadelphia Children's Theatre was conceived by Christopher Speeth in 1962 and hosted by the Friends Neighborhood Guild the nonprofit community service organization founded in 1879. By the time the Theatre was organized and indeed from the 1920s on the Guild's service area was primarily African American as were the children involved in the Theatre for Children. An analogous project the Winchester Theatre for Children was established in New Haven in 1962 and there was a significant degree of cross-pollination between the administration of the two groups. Among the plays produced by the Philadelphia Theatre for Children was William Butler Yeats's KING OF THE GREAT CLOCK TOWER. While there are no explicit credits included for the text or the photographs another copy we have examined has the handwritten note: "Poem: R. Gelbspan / Photography: Kleinbard Trucker." No copies of this or any other printed material relating to the Theatre turn up in OCLC searches utilizing probable search criteria.
