15 17 19 21 & 23 Southampton Row Holborn London.: The Midland Furnishing Company Limited. Good with no dust jacket. 1912. Presumed First UK Edition. Paperback. In brown paper-covered card covers. Titled on the front cover only in dark brown with a Midland Furnishing Company Monogram on the bottom front corner The covers are scruffy and stained and the whole book has been folded in half and therefore has a 'curve/fold' running through the whole book - but as it's just 'floppy' there is no damage. A little of the paper on the head and tail of the spine has been reglued. Some marks/scuffs/grubbiness to the page fore-edges and a little light dampstaining to the blank edges of the first couple of pages otherwise generally internally the book is clean and tight. NO date shown but from internal evidence of images etc I would think this could be any date from the turn of the century to 1920s but I can't find out anything about this company so. A few pieces are showing evidence of an Art Nouveau influence others look earlier One of the most interesting things about this catalogue is that it starts after a full colour frontispiece and Title with 19 b/w full page illustrations of various Main rooms showing design and layout using the firm's Furniture and Accessories and then shows ALL the Pricing too on a separate page - ie: 'Drawing Room in 25 Flat' the Total it would cost to furnish ALL rooms : all the way up to a Dining Room etc in 445.17s. 6d Residence then showing the Total it would cost to furnish ALL rooms in the Residence including the Servant's Bedroom The Kitchen etc. - but no illustrations of these. This is a lovely piece of social history on it's own. 4 184pp. Illustrations in monotone throughout but some suites of illustrations in full colour and some others heightened in colour. Contents cover all furniture and some accessories needed in homes of this period including an Upright and a Grand Piano. ALL with PRICES. Make 'Em Laugh: The Funny Business Of America
Burbank CA: Rhino DVD DVD Box Set: Hosted By Billy Crystal & Narrated By Amy Sedaris 3-DVD Set Presents A 6-Episode Series Chronicling A Century Of America's Funniest Entertainment And Its Most Legendary Comedians! Three discs with 420 minutes of content. 2008 Copyright. This box set is still in its original shrinkwrap and in Mint Condition. Image shown is a stock photo of the same edition featured in this listing. Product Description Who said of war "When you get into trouble 5000 miles from your home you've got to have been looking for it" Was it Bill Maher Jon Stewart Stephen Colbert Nope; it was Will Rogers whose good-humored pokes at politicians defined the 1920s and 30s and set the stage for today’s more confrontational Real Time with Bill Maher The Daily Show andThe Colbert Report. This through line is what makes Make 'Em Laugh such an enlightening and exhilarating survey of American comedy. This vastly entertaining six-part PBS series explores how comedy has defined the nation's character and spotlights comedians through the generations who broke the mold broke the rules and in some cases broke their necks to make us bust a gut. The ambitious Make 'Em Laugh is divided into six episodes each devoted to a particular genre or style of comedy: "Would Ya Hit a Man with Glasses: Nerds Jerks & Oddballs"; "Honey I'm Home: Breadwinners and Homemakers"; "Slip on a Banana Peel: The Knockabouts"; "When I'm Bad I'm Better: The Groundbreakers"; and "Sock It To Me: Satire and Parody." Host Billy Crystal contributes some amusing bits to introduce each episode the best is a pitch-perfect parody of Ken Burns’ stately documentaries. The charmingly off-center Amy Sedaris narrates. Comedy buffs may squawk over some grievous omissions most heinously Ernie Kovacs David Letterman Second City and SCTV and don't blame Canada; Jim Carrey a fellow Great White Norther rates a segment. But the roster of participants over 90 comedians writers producers agents and historians is staggering and the clips are not just the same old same old. There is rare footage of Elaine May and Mike Nichols and Tom Lehrer. The series is contemporary enough to include Judd Apatow Larry David The Simpsons and Family Guy. The old masters Chaplin Keaton Laurel & Hardy the Marx Brothers W.C. Fields and The Three Stooges get their due as do the so-called sick and cerebral comedians of the 1950s ‘60s and ‘70s Lenny Bruce Shelley Berman Richard Pryor George Carlin for whom "getting a laugh and getting at the truth were the same thing." To its credit Make ‘Em Laugh gives respect to some faded or forgotten clowns characters and kidders including Harold Lloyd Mae West Moms Mabley Phil Silvers and Alan Sherman. If someone doesn't tickle your fancy another entertainer will be along shortly. Cultural historians are on hand to explain what it all means but it's more fun to hear the performers talk about their comedy heroes and inspirations and how they found their own voices. At one point satirist Mort Sahl reveals that Milton Berle once gave him a pointed political joke rather than use it himself and explained to Sahl "They don’t think I'm smart enough." It may not be a profound statement but no truer words are spoken in this series than "There will always be funny people thank goodness." For future generations of comedians these people will be a hard act to follow. --Donald Liebenson. DVD. Mint. Rhino DVD unknown

A Matter of Life and Death Original UK Film Program signed by Michael Powell
London: The Archers / Eagle-Lion 1946. Original UK Program for the 1946 film released in the US as "Stairway to Heaven." SIGNED by director Michael Powell on page 12 just above the photo next to his biographical sketch.

While it is certainly arguable that the greatest Powell-Pressburger film is a 10-way tie for first place "A Matter of Life and Death" is probably the most philosophically ambitious of their masterpieces. David Niven is a British wartime aviator who unwittingly cheats death and must ultimately argue for his continued existence before a celestial court. In between these two events is a wildly imaginative and surreal tale told first in Technicolor on earth then in Dye-Monochrome black-and-white in heaven.

This oversize program book evokes the spirit of the film beautifully with clever use of two-color processes mostly pink and blue throughout. Includes biographies and large photos of the principal actors reviews an essay about the techniques used to shoot the film and credits for the cast and crew. The credits and promotion are specific to the UK rather than international or US distribution of the film through Eagle-Lion and General Distributors.

Self-wrappers 14.5 x 11.5 inches saddle-stapled.
