The Magician of Lublin Collection of three original title card maquettes for the 1979 film
Los Angeles: Golan-Globus Productions 1979. Three original draft title card maquettes hand lettered by Harold Adler for the 1979 film. Based on the 1960 novel by Isaac Bashevis Singer. The three sketches show different approaches to the title all distinct from the final lettering design used. <br/><br/>Harold Adler was a calligrapher who created hand lettered titles on over 100 films worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock and was a favorite of legendary title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In addition to "The Magician of Lublin" his credits include "Comanche!" 1956 "The Man with the Golden Arm" 1955 "The Seven Year Itch" 1955 "Carmen Jones" 1954 "Psycho" 1960 "The Birds" 1963 "In the Heat of the Night" 1967 and "Finian's Rainbow" 1969. In 2012 an exhibition of Adler's work was organized by noted typographer and design historian Jill Bell at the American Advertising Federation Kansas City. <br/><br/>At the turn of the Twentieth century a Jewish stage magician and con man whose career has been ruined by womanizing gets one more shot at the big time by attempting to pull off a never before seen trick. <br/><br/>Two leaves. Final script for the 1942 film. <br/><br/>A lighthearted drama centering on a female stamp collector obsessed with a government mail sack of undelivered letters that has turned up after missing for 50 years. <br/><br/>The AFI Catalog notes that all the title cards for the film's opening credits are handwritten on envelopes postmarked 1889. A studio press release asserted that producer Ralph Dietrich got the idea for the film from a newspaper story concerning "the discovery in Philadelphia some months ago of a mail bag apparently the loot of a robbery some seventy-five years before." The story reported that the mail would be delivered by the post office to the addressees or their heirs. <br/><br/>Blue titled wrappers noted as FINAL on the front wrapper rubber-stamped copy No. 70 and production No. 768 dated April 1 1942. "Old Times" made its debut in London at the Royal Shakespeare company earlier in 1971 and both the US and UK productions were directed by Peter Hall. Filmed in 1991 as an American television movie starring John Malkovich. <br/><br/>The story of a vaguely implied love triangle between a married couple and the wife's oldest friend who comes to visit after an absence of 20 years. The Caretaker opened at the Lyceum Theatre on October 4 1961 for a run of 165 performances closing on February 24 1962.<br/><br/>Harold Pinter's sixth major work and first commercial success a tragicomedy highly indebted to Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot 1953. The play premiered at the Arts Theatre Club in London in April of 1960 transferring to the Duchess Theatre a month later then after 444 performances to Broadway in 1961 where it starred Alan Bates Donald Pleasence and Robert Shaw.<br/><br/>Nominated for three Tony Awards including Best Play Best Actor in a Play for Donald Pleasance and Best Direction of a Play for Donald McWhinnie. Revived twice on Broadway in 1986 and 2004.
