No jacket.FOREWORD by Lord Delfont As Life President of the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund it is both an honour and a source of great pride to present this history of the Royal Variety Performance which celebrates its Diamond Jubilee this year and has in the course of this century established itself as a unique and hugely popular British institution. My own involvement with the Royal Variety Performance dates back to 1958 when I presented my first 'royal show' at the Coliseum. Robert Nesbitt joined me that year as my director a role which he continued to perform throughout the next two decades as year after year we strove to compile shows that reflected the broad and ever-changing spectrum of entertainment. To him the EABF and I owe a lasting debt for the consistently high standards of direction and innovation that he brought to bear in staging a show that in its early days at least relied on a bare forty-eight hours of rehearsal and drew artistes from the four corners of the globe. In 1958 1 was also joined in this work by Billy Marsh one of our most respected show-business managers and a Life Governor of the Fund. For the next thirty years he was to act as an invaluable adviser on every Royal Variety Performance and he remains one of its mainstays today as well as a greatly respected figure in all branches of show business. After twenty years 1 decided that the time had come to pass the reins of leadership on to our Vice President Louis Benjamin who had long been associated with the intricacies involved in the months of planning and preparation. Under his sure guidance the Royal Variety Performance continued and accelerated its progress as the sole annual variety show that commands a worldwide audience. Louis Benjamin with the able assistance of his director Norman Maen struck out into new ground by constructing several shows around immensely successful themes. This brought a freshness and vitality that appealed to both the audience in the theatre and the increasingly important television audience at home and abroad. On a financial level the Royal Variety Performance under Louis Benjamin made far-reaching advances as well and these underpinned and secured the increasing expenditure of the LABF in its important work of caring for retired and elderly members of our profession. Between 1979 and 1984 he more than trebled the Fund's income from the Royal Variety Performance and judged artistically and financially his years as presenter will remain major milestones in the history of both the Fund and the show. Printed in blue ink on white paper stock. <br /><br />A scarce program guide for the play "Horse Eats Hat" written by Edwin Denby and Orson Welles with music by Paul Bowles. Welles directed and appeared in the play which featured Joseph Cotten Arlene Francis and many others. <br /><br />In the play adapted from a French farce a horse eats a hat "and the owner of the horse must get the owner of the hat another hat because she can't go home to her husband without it." The New York Times September 28 1936 page 14. <br /><br />"Horse Eats Hat" was performed at Maxine Elliott's Theatre in New York as part of the Federal Theatre Project during the Depression. Managing Producer: the great John Houseman. At the opening the Times informs us "Half the audience was pretty indignant and the other half quite amused.It can be fought about at a top price of 55 cents." <br /><br />OCLC shows a poster of this play held by the Library of Congress but no institutional holdings of the program guide. <b>SCARCE</b>. <br /><br />CONDITION: Vertical crease some soiling and edge wear.
