‎[MINIATURE - GERMAN].‎

‎[The Arrest of Christ].[Flanders (Bruges?), or Nürnberg, ca. 1520]. Miniature painted on vellum (7.8 x 5.6 cm) in numerous colours, highlighted with gold and in a gold border, probably from a book of hours, but with no text.‎

‎, . . For the general style: U. Merkl, Buchmalerei in Bayern in der ersten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts (1999). A finely rendered miniature showing great detail in bright colours, highlighted with gold, depicting the Arrest of Christ, most likely from a diminutive book of hours. Surrounded by a bustling throng of Roman soldiers carrying spears and wearing halberds, Christ appears calm just at the moment when a soldier takes him captive. An elder of the Jewish Temple stands directly behind him, dressed in red. To the right stands Simon Peter, sword raised, having cut off the ear of the High Priest's servant, Malchus, who sits nursing his bleeding ear in the lower left corner of the composition. An earlier episode, Christ's Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, when he learns that one of his disciples will betray him, appears in the background at left. A genre scene, with men working the fields and crossing a river on a narrow plank bridge, occupies the middle ground to the left of the main scene, and the towers of a castle or city the middle ground to the right. The general style recalls the art of the last generation of Ghent-Bruges painters, especially that of the famed Simon Bening. Though the anonymous artist owes much of his style to Bening's model, he was most likely German. The acidic palette, bright yellow juxtaposed with blue and lime green, and the facial types (remarkably expressive, even at this tiny scale) recall Nürnberg painters in the circle of Glockendon. It is worth remembering that Bening himself collaborated with several Nürnberg painters whose presence in Flanders is thus confirmed. With some fine superficial cracks and an occasional tiny abrasion (mostly near the edges), but generally in good condition. A lovely miniature of Christ's arrest, rendered in remarkably fine detail.‎

‎[PRAYERBOOK - RUSSIAN ORTHODOX - KIEV LITURGY].‎

‎Posledovanie na den' s[via]tyia Paskhi i na vsiu svetluiu sedmitsu [=Order for the Holy Day of Easter and for the whole of Easter week]. Kiev, Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves), [ca. 1801]. 8vo in 4s (18.5×11.5 cm). Easter liturgy in Old Church Slavonic, with title-page and about 20 other pages printed in red and black, the title in a woodcut border and with a woodcut Paschal lamb, a full-page engraving of Jesus's Resurrection on the back of the title-page, and all pages after the title-page with borders made up of 4 woodcut strips. Set in 3 sizes of Old Slavonic poluustav cyrillic type. Printed on laid paper with a blue-green cast. Contemporary gold-panel-stamped and gold-tooled calf by the Kiev Monastery of the Caves, with a panel stamp of Jesus on the front board and a panel stamp of Maria on the back, gilt edges.‎

‎, . . For the Kiev bindery: S. A. Klepikov, "Historical notes on Ukrainian bookbinding", in: The book collector, 15 (1966), pp. 135-142. A Russian Orthodox service book for Easter and the week following it, in the Old Church Slavonic language, printed, published and bound at the Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves) in Kiev. The monastery was established in the 11th century. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453 the Orthodox Churches in Russia and Ukraine developed independently. The power of the Czars allowed the Russian Orthodox Church to dominate, so that the Ukrainian Church came under the Moscow Patriarchate in 1686. The Monastery of the Caves is therefore now Ukrainian Orthodox, but fell under the authority of the Russian Orthodox Church when the present service book was published. It nevertheless had its own traditions and rites, so that the present book should be regarded as part of the Ukrainian heritage. The only other copy we have located is at Amsterdam University Library, one of three Easter service books by the Kiev Pechersk Lavra recorded on WorldCat, all octavos. With a lengthy cyrillic inscription on an endleaf. The sewing is somewhat loose and as a result a few leaves are tattered at the edges. There are occasional minor smudges and drops of candle wax. Much of the gold-tooling has rubbed off the binding and the spine is slightly damaged. In spite of these minor defects, the book is in good condition, especially for a book of this nature.‎

After a preliminary note on the events of 1714 (pp. 3-4) the book gives orations and prayers for each of the nine days of the Novena. We have located neither another copy of the present Argentine edition nor an earlier edition of the same text, but the title-page indicates that an earlier edition existed. The prayers for the nine days are followed by a closing note with additional prayers, which includes a reference to another book: Juan Gabriel de Contreras, Despertador eucarístico, Madrid, 1786, which is known in the literature. With bookplate and stamp. The binder has trimmed the margins, just touching the text on 1 page, but without loss, and there is a stain on the title-page, but the book is in very good condition. The binding has some tears and chips to the spine and corners, but is still good.‎

‎He inoi ma nga tamariki.[Napier?, printed by Robert Coupland Harding?, 1889?]. 8vo (18 x 12.5 cm). Single leaf, printed on 1 side.‎

‎, . . Books in Maori 1246; Williams, supp. 779a; WorldCat (3 copies); for Coupland Harding: McKenzie, "Harding, Robert Coupland", in: DNZB (online ed.). Rare leaflet containing five Christian prayers for children in the Maori language, an offprint of a page from an almanac ("Maramataka mo te tau") probably for the year 1890. Robert Coupland Harding (1849-1916), "New Zealand's first and most eminent typographer" (McKenzie), printed these almanacs for the years 1883 to 1890 and 1892, so presumably also the separate leaves of prayers, as the catalogue of the Alexander Turnbull Library suggests. The present one opens with a quotation from Luke 11:1 and an introductory paragraph, followed by the title in capitals, which translates as "A prayer for the children". The prayers themselves are presented under three numbered headings: I for little children (with one prayer for the morning and one for the afternoon), II for children above age 10 (with the same) and III for the beginning of school. With a couple creases (one through the corner of the text), some minor foxing and a few small marginal tears, chips or holes. A rare Maori leaflet with prayers for children.‎

‎, . . Landwehr, Emblem and fable books 1; NNBW X, cols. 911-913; STCN (1 copy); WorldCat (5 copies). Very rare first edition of a religious emblem book by the eccentric millenarian theologian Petrus Serrarius (1600-1669). It contains 45 emblems (measuring ca. 75 x 48 mm) with engraved texts underneath and an explanatory letterpress poem on the facing pages. The work is divided into three parts with fifteen emblems each. The emblems are probably engraved by the publisher Savry after the plates Boëtius à Bolswert made for Herman Hugo's Pia desideria, the most influential religious emblem book published in the Netherlands (Antwerp, 1624). Serrarius was born in Flanders and lived for many years in Amsterdam calling himself "priest of the General Church". He was a friend of Comenius and wrote many controversial theological works leading to a conflict with the official church and especially with professor Maresius of Groningen University. ‎BOOK OF HOURS‎

‎Book of Hours Use of Angers with pilgrims badges; illuminated manuscript on parchment in Latin‎

‎RARE AND UNEXPECTED TREASURES OF PILGRIMS' BADGES ARE SEWN INTO THE PAGES OF THIS ILLUMINATED BOOK OF HOURS FROM ANGERS. Illuminated manuscript on parchment in Latin France Angers c. 1450-1475 Dimensions 173-178 x 122-127 mm. 80 folios on parchment lacking six leaves written in a well-formed gothic bookhand on fifteen long lines FOUR ILLUMINATED INITIALS of three to four lines in blue or rose with white tracery on burnished gold grounds and with infill of flowers or strawberries with three-quarter floral border adorned with gold and painted in rose green and blue ff. 12v 15v 19 22 with initial on f. 22 executed in a slightly different style than the other three later addition ff. 79v-80 written in a handsome btarde script on fifteen long lines capitals highlighted in red underlining in red one- to two-line red initials some corrections by the scribe SIX METAL BADGES AND ONE DEVOTIONAL IMAGE ON PARCHMENT SEWN IN with green thread on f. 8 wide clean margins in excellent condition. BINDING: Bound in sixteenth-century brown leather most of the leather has been lost from spine one metal badge sewn in front pastedown with white thread. DECORATED WITH PILGRIM'S BADGES AND A DEVOTIONAL IMAGE: Seven badges in a single previously unstudied book is a very exciting find as this illuminated Book of Hours is an object of great rarity and historical value. The added badges and painting provide important physical evidence as to how this book was used early on. This book has served a clear devotional purpose of its own guiding its owner through his or her daily prayers but it also served as a repository for devotional objects gathered by one or more of its early owners. The thin metal badges sewn within the pages of this volume are pilgrims' badges souvenirs sold at pilgrimage churches that devout travelers could affix to their clothing or hats as a mark of identification or even as a protective talisman. Their presence in Books of Hours would no doubt also have prompted users to recall their experiences of pilgrimage far more communal and extraordinary than the daily reading of their prayer books. Along similar lines the painting of the Holy Face was almost certainly added as a focus for the owner's devotions. PROVENANCE: The contents and decoration of this manuscript indicate that it was produced in the diocese of Angers most likely in the third quarter of the fifteenth century c. 1450-1475. One or more early owners of the book sewed a number of pilgrims' badges into this Book of Hours. Later it belonged to Ambroise-Franois Hardy de Lvar born 20 July 1749 squire and marshal of the house of King Louis XVI reigned 1774-1791. More recently it was in a private collection in the United States. CONDITION: Most of leather lost from spine some worming and warping of upper board with large tear in leather wear to edges of both boards exposing pasteboard underneath that comprises pages from early imprints. Otherwise in excellent condition.‎

‎Hore beate Marie virginis secundum usum ecclesie romane‎

‎Paris: Gilles Hardouyn pour Germain Hardouyn 1521. 97 of 104 leaves printed on vellum 23 lines black letter initials in gold on blue or red grounds text pages within a variety of historiated and ornamental borders and with 16 large and 13 small metal cuts FULLY ILLUMINATED IN GOLD AND COLORS BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. 8vo. 17th century French citron morocco tooled in gilt to a panel design with drawer-handle and volute tools. 8vo. Printed on Vellum with 16 Large Miniatures. Fine example of illumination on vellum in an early binding from the atelier of the Hardouins who along with the Parisian printers Kerver and Simon Vostre made the printing and illumination of vellum Books of Hours one of their specialties. Books of Hours were traditionally used at home rather than at church and such was demand that "from the mid-thirteenth to the mid-sixteenth century more Books of Hours were produced both by hand and by the press than any other type of book" Wieck p7. It's often noted that Books of Hours finally placed access to God in the hands of the public. With the new technology of moveable type the ability to satisfy demand increased dramatically and though still expensive they were now in reach of a far larger section of the public. Joseph Cundall explains the printing process: "There is no doubt that the famous illustrations of the Missal or 'Book of Hours' issued in Paris between 1490 and 1520 were engraved on metal of some kind perhaps on copper or some amalgam of tin and copper. It will be noticed that the groundwork of many borders in the French books is filled with little white dots criblé it was called; these dots are in the first place to imitate similar work in the gold grounds of the borders of illustrated missals and in the second place to save the labour of cutting away so much of the metal as would be required for a white ground. " Curiously many of the images in French Books of Hours were made after German illustrations. However the real distinction lay in the quality of illumination and particularly the use of gold leaf. Examples such as this redolent in gilt and in a contemporary hand are very desireable indeed. Bohatta 961; Lacombe 316; Adams 1032; Joseph Cundall. "A Brief History of Wood engraving" in The Publishers' Circular No 1350 May 14 1892 p. 550; Roger S. Wieck Painted Prayers NY 2004

Gilles Hardouyn pour Germain Hardouyn hardcover‎
