‎*Blatt aus einer Ausgabe "Horae" des Pariser Verlegers Simon Vostre mit prächtig kolorierter ganzseitiger Darstellung einer Mondsichelmadonna. Ab ca. 1498 bis ins zweite Dezenium des 16.Jahrhunderts publizierte der Verleger Simon Vostre gedruckte Stundenbücher für eine wohlhabende Oberschicht. Sie waren mit ihrer aufwendigen Drucktechnik mit vielen Metallschnitten allerdings kaum günstiger als ihre handgemalten Pendants, so dass "der Metallschnitt sich neben dem Holzschnitt nicht recht durchsetzen konnte" (Mazal, Buchkunst Gotik, 132). - Sauber und gut erhalten.‎

‎Belle marque à la licorne de Kerver sur le titre, planche de l'Homme anatomique, 46 grandes gravures et 32 petites, de toute beauté. Beau livre d'heures imprimé en rouge et noir, en lettres rondes, dans des bordures historiées ou ornementales, que d'aucuns annoncent comme connu à seulement six exemplaires. Thielman Ier Kerver (mort en novembre 1522), libraire et imprimeur originaire de Coblence, fut actif à Paris de 1497 à 1522 et acquit une réputation méritée pour la qualité graphique de ses livres d'heures. À partir de 1519, il s'installa dans un nouvel atelier auquel il donna l'enseigne de la Licorne (celle de son ancien atelier du pont Saint-Michel).La planche placée avant l'Almanach montre l'Homme anatomique dont les viscères sont en rapport avec les astres. Les bordures des Vigiles des trépassés contiennent la Danse des Morts, qui ne se trouve que dans les livres d'heures imprimés par Thielman Kerver et Simon Vostre (F. An unrecorded Parisian Book of Hours this manuscript has a sequence of beautifully executed miniatures attributed by FranÃois Avril to one of the artists responsible for the†Bible Historiale†Paris BnF MS fr. 159 a grand manuscript given to Jean Duke of Berry by Raoulet díAuquetonville before 1402. Our Book of Hours was painted for an unidentified female donor depicted twice in the manuscript. Once she kneels in prayer before St. John the Baptist who must be her patron saint f. 185. A second time St. John the Baptist presents her to the Virgin and Child whom she adores in prayer f. 110. Her costume befits a lady of the court and suggests a date around 1400. The paintings corroborate this date. The†Bible Historiale†is regarded as one of the earliest works of an artist surely trained in the Netherlands who appeared in Paris at the beginning of the fifteenth century and cannot be traced after 1405. Bella Martens called him the ìMaster of 1402î and Millard Meiss in 1967 renamed him the Master of the Coronation of the Virgin after a stunning frontispiece of this subject in a manuscript of Jacobus de Voragineís†Golden Legend†of 1402-03 Paris BnF MS fr. 242. In Paris working with collaborators on large projects the Coronation Master was responsible for a sequence of richly illuminated volumes that include the†Fleur des histories de la terre díOrient Paris BnF MS fr. 12201 and Boccaccioís†Des cleres et nobles femmes†Paris BnF MS fr. 12420. Among the related hands in the lavish†Bible Historiale†emerges as a distinctive personality who must have had his own workshop. Working side by side with the Coronation Master the Master of the†Bible Historiale†assimilated his style and our manuscript recalls some of these early works. We suspect that our artist like the Coronation Master originated in the North because of the ìrealismî of the exceptionally fine miniature of the Nativity f. 50 with its hemp floor and wattled fence the tenderness of Joseph seated close to the Virgin Mary and the bare breasts of the reclining Virgin. The finely tessellated diaper backgrounds and the triangular tiled floor that tilts upward both repeatedly used in our Book of Hours also occur in the miniature of the Coronation of the Virgin. In the†Funeral Mass†f. 120 the dark outlines for the expressive faces are comparable to those in†Clerics Singing†in the†Bible Historiale. Likewise the soft features of the Virginís rounded face the crisp modeling in her garment and her slender delicate hands are found in the†Coronation of the Virgin†and elsewhere. Sprinkled with tiny plants the blossom with red blue or white flowers the simple landscapes reappear in the†Bible Historiale.†The rendering of the donors anticipates the treatment of the female heroines in the Boccaccio manuscript. The engaging style of the Master of the†Bible Historiale†like that of Jacquemart de Hesdin and the Master of the Breviary of Jean sans Peur exemplifying a ìrealismî that derives from their northern origins represents a special moment in Parisian illumination one that was short-lived. Art in Paris was to evolve in another direction which the more refined cosmopolitan style of the Boucicaut and Bedford Masters best represent. Printed on vellum in red and black throughout with illustrations printed from mostly metal relief blocks: 17 nearly full-page mostly 12.5 x 8 cm plus 1 repeat 27 small about 3.5 x 2 cm plus 2 repeats in the text many additional small in the decorated border pieces that surround nearly every page many in all three groups with criblée backgrounds and further un-illustrated decorative border pieces. Set in a roman type 77 mm/20 lines with incidental textura 118 mm/20 lines. With manuscript initials in gold on red blue or red and blue divided diagonally three 3-line hundreds of 2-line and thousands of 1-line and about 60 manuscript line-fillers in gold on red or blue. Dark brown gold- and blind-tooled goatskin morocco ca. 1870 signed "HARDY-MENNIL" in the foot of the front turn-in.‎

‎216 pp.Second known copy apparently the only known copy printed on vellum of a Paris book of hours in Latin probably published in 1511 the almanac and calendar for 20 years covers the years 1511 to 1530 the only known book of hours printed by Thomas Kees or Caseus from Wesel in the Rhine valley recorded as a printer in Paris from 1507 to 1516. The illustrations are finely cut many with criblée backgrounds and many are thought to have been printed from metal relief blocks rather than woodcuts. Most of the small illustrations in the text depict saints. The illustrations in the border strips include scenes from the Old and New Testament dance of death scenes apostles saints scenes from daily life fantastic beasts and more. The large illustrations may have been cut for Antoine Vérard ca. 1503 to 1507. That on the title-page shows an enormous Holy Grail supported by two angels while two more angels hold the cover aloft with drapery making a sort of canopy. The grail is so large that it looks like a baptismal fount and the Eastern Orthodox Church often used baptismal founts with a chalice form. The same scenes appear in nearly the same order in Antoine Vérard's 1510 book of hours it includes two additional scenes: the Trinity and Pope Gregory as noted by Mortimer who indicates that some copy those shown in editions Pigouchet printed for Vostre in 1497 and 1498.The work was rebound by Hardy-Mennil in Paris ca. 1870. Little is known about Hardy himself. "Mennil" is not separately recorded. All edges gilt multi-colored silk ribbon market. . 7" x 5 5/8." . Text in gothic style letters with elaborate borders initials and miniatures in watercolor and gold in a style reminiscent of the late Middle Ages. A fine and very interesting manuscript featuring very delicate work of a rather varied nature. Pencil presentation inscription in French to a woman named Marie in memory of the presenter's mother who had once owned the book. We know nothing about either the donor or the donee and can only guess whether they had a relation to the producers of this manuscript. unknown‎
