‎New York: Samuel Wood & Sons between 1818 and 1824. 12mo 82 x 140 mm 16 pp. Original publisher’s wrappers illustrated with a horse beneath a grove of trees on the front a ruin on the rear. Upper wrapper lightly soiled with light dime-sized stain and worm hole both transferring to first few pages. Interior and lower wrapper free of markings. A very good copy overall. § A later edition of the first children's book published by Samuel Wood an attractive primer containing upper and lower case alphabets vowels and numbers followed by a pictorial alphabet and progressive syllable exercises. First published in 1806 there were several editions each varying in the wrapper illustrations and occasionally in the illustrations for the pictorial alphabet. Rosenbach attributes all of the cuts to Alexander Anderson here A for Ape B for Bear C for Cat.; Pomeroy is more cautious but includes the title page engraving among others. Rosenbach 596. Pomeroy 203e. Gumuchian 221 and illustrated on plate 50 another edition; cf. Haviland-Coughlan pp. 26-30 1st ed. of 1806 completely reproduced. ‎New York: B.F. Goodrich Co. 1902 One of a small number of copies of this alphabet primer that doubles as an ad for Goodrich Tires. . Dark brown printed wrappers stitched with brown thread. . Narrow quarto. Each page is illustrated some with multiple images in black white and orange and printed on brown paper. Very minor edgewear else a fine crisp copy of a scarce piece of advertising. In the present work there is an illustration for each letter accompanied by rhyming verse. One such example is: "F is for First / like the boy in the race /Just like Palmer Tires which hold the first place." The alphabet and verses are followed by a list of tires sold by Goodrich examples include "The Regular Roadster" which is "The Universal Tire for Pleasure Business General Riding Road Uses and Road Racing. Light Strong Durable and Resilient" and "Mexican" which is "Extra Heavy Thread Two Ply. Heavier Air Tube. Covered Specially to Withstand Hard Usage and Rough Riding…A Good Tourist's Tire." Paris: Phosphatine Falières n.d. ca. 1905. $975.00 The Portuguese edition of a charming "Abécédaire" which is not recorded in Gumuchian or Osborne. The illustrations combine infants or children playing in or around letters of the alphabet some of which are constructed from chairs trees lamps bricks ladders diving boards etc. The 12 colour-printed plates with text in French and Portuguese are executed after original designs by Timoleon Marie Lobrichon 1831-1914 who is "above all celebrated for his humorous portraits of children" Benezit. The work was published by the Phosphatine Falières who also issued it with a French text which is of equal rarity. In fine condition. hardcover books‎

Box worn with tears and small portions of edges missing or loose; Play Tray and letters in very good condition with some light scuffing to a few pieces. Wonderful collectible toy from the 1930s. Each letter is shaped like a little animal with its name labeled on the Play Tray; the die-cut allows for that letter to be slotted into only that hole: A for Antelope C for Cat I for Ibis U for Unicorn X for Xantho etc. Includes an instruction sheet. . Edition unknown inscribed 1875 8vo 180 x 135 mm 7 x 5½ inches original publisher's red cloth decorated black black titled spine title on gilt panel on upper cover yellow endpapers 68 pages. 4 separate items: Royal Alphabet; Diamonds and Toads; Old Woman and Her Pig; and Dame Trot and Her Cat all with very good bright colour plates 24 in total probably printed by Kronheim. No.1: no half-title not paginated 4 pages of text 6 colour plates with guards including the frontispiece each with 4 images J and U omitted; No.2: half-title on reverse of first plate 4 numbered pages 6 colour plates; Nos 3 and 4 as No.2. The alphabet is mainly kings and queens of England T concerns the Trial of Charles I and Z the Battle of Zutphen. Diamonds and Toads the story of a kind girl and a selfish bad-tempered one was apparently illustrated by Kate Greenaway early in her career for Warne in Aunt Louisa's Nursery Favourite 1870. Schuster states page 41 that Percy Muir had warned there were 2 versions of Diamonds and Toads from Warne by different illustrators. Our version is quite different from that in the Aunt Louisa. Spine very slightly rubbed and slightly faded inscription on front endpaper inner paper hinges partly cracked frontispiece mounted neatly on front endpaper 2 tiny closed edge tears neatly repaired a little pale offsetting facing plates.
