CREATIVE IMITATION AND LATIN LITERATURE
Cambridge University Press. 1979. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover G. P. Goold. Else very minor shelfwear to book and DJ.; The poets and prose-writers of Greece and Rome were acutely conscious of their literary heritage. They expressed this consciousness in the regularity with which in their writings they imitated and alluded to the great authors who had preceded them. Such imitation was generally not regarded as plagiarism but as essential to the creation of a new literary work: imitating one's predecessors was in no way incompatible with originality or progress. These views were not peculiar to the writers of Greece and Rome but were adopted by many others who have written in the 'classical tradition' right up to modern times. Creative Imitation and Latin Literature is an exploration of this concept of imitation. The contributors analyse selected passages from various authors - Greek Latin and English - in order to demonstrate how Latin authors created new works of art by imitating earlier passages of literature.; 255 pages . 0521226686 . AUTHOR AND AUDIENCE IN LATIN LITERATURE
Cambridge University Press. 1992. Hardcover. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover G. P. Goold else Book is fine. Very Minor shelfwear to DJ; The relationship between the author and his audience has received much critical attention from scholars in non-classical disciplines yet the nature of much ancient literature and of its 'publication' meant that audiences in ancient times were more immediate to their authors than in the modern world. This book contains essays by distinguished scholars on the various means by which Latin authors communicated effectively with their audiences. The authors and works covered are Cicero Catullus Lucretius Propertius Horace's Odes Virgil's Aeneid Ovid's Metamorphoses Senecan tragedy Persius Pliny's letters Tacitus' Annals and medieval love lyric. Contributors have provided detailed analyses of particular passages in order to throw light on the many different ways in which authors catered for their audiences by fulfilling manipulating and thwarting their expectations; and in an epilogue the editors have drawn together the issues raised by these contributions and have attempted to place them in an appropriate critical context.; 292 pages . 0521383072 . SAINTS AND SYMPOSIASTS; The Literature of Food and the Symposium in Greco-Roman and Early Christian Culture
Cambridge University Press. 2012. Hardcover. Fine in Fine dust jacket. Greek traditions of writing about food and the symposium had a long and rich afterlife in the first to fifth centuries CE in both Greco-Roman and early Christian culture. This book provides an account of the history of the table-talk tradition derived from Plato's Symposium and other classical texts focusing among other writers on Plutarch Athenaeus Methodius and Macrobius. It also deals with the representation of transgressive degraded eccentric types of eating and drinking in Greco-Roman and early Christian prose narrative texts focusing especially on the Letters of Alciphron the Greek and Roman novels especially Apuleius the Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles and the early saints' lives. It argues that writing about consumption and conversation continued to matter: these works communicated distinctive ideas about how to talk and how to think distinctive models of the relationship between past and present distinctive and often destabilising visions of identity and holiness.; Greek Culture in the Roman World; 430 pages . 0521886856 . APOLLO AUGUSTUS AND THE POETS
Cambridge University Press. 2009. Hardcover. Fine in Fine dust jacket. Apollo's importance in the religion of the Roman state was markedly heightened by the emperor Augustus who claimed a special affiliation with the god. Contemporary poets variously responded to this appropriation of Phoebus Apollo both participating in the construction of an imperial symbolism and resisting that ideological project. This book offers a synoptic study of 'Augustan' Apollo in Augustan poetry. Topics explored include the divine self-imaging of late Republican rivals for power poetic imaginings of Apollo's intervention at the pivotal battle of Actium how poets 'read' Augustus' new Palatine Temple of Apollo and the deity's role in the reconstituted Saecular Games and Apollo's key position in the emerging dialectic between poetics - as traditional divine patron of music and literature - and politics - as patron of Augustus. Discussions encompass the major Latin poets Horace Virgil Tibullus Propertius Ovid as well as anonymous voices in poetic lampoons encomia and contemporary Greek verse.; 422 pages . 0521516838 . THE MAKING OF ROMAN INDIA
Cambridge University Press. 2008. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Book is fine. Front DJ flap creased. 1 very tiny chip to DJ.; Latin and especially Greek texts of the imperial period contain a wealth of references to 'India'. Professor Parker offers a survey of such texts read against a wide range of other sources both archaeological and documentary. He emphasises the social processes whereby the notion of India gained its exotic features including the role of the Persian empire and of Alexander's expedition. Three kinds of social context receive special attention: the trade in luxury commodities; the political discourse of empire and its limits; and India's status as a place of special knowledge embodied in 'naked philosophers'. Roman ideas about India ranged from the specific and concrete to the wildly fantastic and the book attempts to account for such variety. It ends by considering the afterlife of such ideas into late antiquity and beyond.; Greek Culture in the Roman World; 374 pages . 0521858348 . Cambridge University Press hardcover

HISTORIOGRAPHY AT THE END OF THE REPUBLIC; Provincial Perspectives on Roman Rule
Oxford University Press. 2006. Hardcover. Fine in Fine dust jacket. This study of six historians from the edges of the Roman world at the end of the Republic--the author of I Maccabees Posidonius Diodorus Siculus Pompeius Trogus Nicolaus of Damascus and Memnon of Heraclea--combines discussion of their biographical details the intellectual and elite culture in which they composed and the methodological difficulties of interpreting fragmentary texts with textual analysis of their representations of Rome. These authors show remarkable unity in their acceptance of Roman hegemony. Nevertheless their interpretations of Roman rule assume political significance in the light of their intentions in writing and the audiences whom they addressed. They therefore provide a unique insight into the minds of the conquered peoples and the intellectual culture which allowed them to influence their conquerors.; Oxford Classical Monographs; 416 pages . 0199277540 . Harris, William V
RESTRAINING RAGE; The Ideology of Anger Control in Classical Antiquity
Harvard University Press. 2001. Hardcover. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Very faint shelfwear Else book is fine. DJ has light edgewear with a bit of creasing. Dustjacket is protected in plastic sleeve.; The angry emotions and the problems they presented were an ancient Greek preoccupation from Homer to late antiquity. From the first lines of the Iliad to the church fathers of the fourth century A. D. the control or elimination of rage was an obsessive concern. From the Greek world it passed to the Romans. Drawing on a wide range of ancient texts and on recent work in anthropology and psychology Restraining Rage explains the rise and persistence of this concern. W. V. Harris shows that the discourse of anger-control was of crucial importance in several different spheres in politics--both republican and monarchical--in the family and in the slave economy. He suggests that it played a special role in maintaining male domination over women. He explores the working out of these themes in Attic tragedy in the great Greek historians in Aristotle and the Hellenistic philosophers and in many other kinds of texts. From the time of Plato onward educated Greeks developed a strong conscious interest in their own psychic health. Emotional control was part of this. Harris offers a new theory to explain this interest and a history of the anger-therapy that derived from it. He ends by suggesting some contemporary lessons that can be drawn from the Greek and Roman experience.; 480 pages . 0674006186 . Harvard University Press hardcover
