HOMER AND THE EPIC A Shortened Version of 'the Songs of Homer'
Cambridge University Press. Good. 1979. Softcover. 0521093562 . Sunning to spine. Pen markings to some pages. Dampstaining to a couple of pages. Scholar's name to ffep Jonathan Burgess. ; 243 pages; This is a shortened and rearranged version of The Songs of Homer. The literature of the western world begins with one of its greatest achievements. The stories of the wrath of Achilles and its consequences and of the wanderings of Odysseus have been admired from ancient times to the present day. The two great epics can be read and enjoyed unreflectingly as tales of adventure; or they can be studied as literature yielding as insight and understanding grow a deeper and more permanent pleasure. Professor Kirk's book is the means to this pleasure. It is a vivid and comprehensive account of the background and development of the Homeric poems and of their quality as literature. The epics are seen primarily as oral poetry sung for centuries by illiterate singers; and from this view rises discussion of the problems of authorship and transmission. The historical archaeological and linguistic evidence is also examined; and the possible contributions of the Mycenaean period and of the subsequent Dark Age are shown in a fresh light. . SIGNS OF ORALITY The Oral Tradition and Its Influence in the Greek and Roman World
Brill. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. 1999. Hardcover. 9004112731 . Some pencil markings and underlining. Slight spine slant. Scholar's name to ffep Jonathan Burgess. Edgewear creasing and a couple of tears to DJ. ; The essays in this volume present new insights into the far-reaching influence of an early oral culture on subsequent development after the spread of literacy. At the outset revisionist essays on the Homeric epics examine such questions as historical memory Homer's audience s descriptive strategies ring-composition and the status of orality as a constitutive feature of the epics. These are followed by virtually unprecedented studies of the orality of later written literature including Greek oratory Virgilian epic Pliny's Panegyricus and story-telling in late Greek writers. Included as well are two discussions of Athenian vase-painting: annular scene-composition in the black-figure tradition and the implications of kalos-inscriptions. An introduction by leading oral theorist John Miles Foley situates all the essays at the leading edge of oral theoretical development. ; Mnemosyne. Bibliotheca Classica Batava. E. J. Brill. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1994. Hardcover. 9004099263 . Minor edgewear to DJ. Scratch to middle panel of DJ. ; This work contains material to supplement volume one of the author's "Loeb Euripides". It consists of two parts: Testimonia Vitae et Artis Selecta and Textual Discussions. The Testimonia ancient notes about the life of Euripides and his career as a tragic poet are printed together with a facing English translation. The Loeb introduction examines this material critically. Equipped with this body of evidence students of Greek tragedy and of ancient biography will be able to assess for themselves the reliability of the biographical tradition in which the author argues too much confidence has been placed by interpreters of plays. The Textual Discussions explain places in the plays of volume one "Cyclops" "Alcestis" and "Medea" where the text adopted by the editor calls for comment. ; Mnemosyne Bibliotheca Classica Batava Supplementum; 181 pages . HESIOD: WORKS AND DAYS Edited with Prolegomena and Commentary
Oxford Clarendon Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. 0198140053 . Very light pencilling to margins. Scholar's name to ffep Martin Cropp. DJ spine is sunned and discolored. Faint edgewear to DJ. ; 414 pages; Hesiod was an ancient Greek poet whose Works and Days discusses agricultural practices and society in general. Classicists and ancient historians have turned to Works and Days for its insights on Greek mythology and religion. The poem also sheds light on economic history and ancient agriculture and is a good resource for social scientists interested in these areas. This translation emphasizes the activities and problems of a practicing agriculturist as well as the larger changing political and economic institutions of the early archaic period. The authors provide a clear accurate translation along with notes aimed at a broad audience. The introductory essay discusses the changing economic political and trading world of the eighth and seventh centuries B. C. E. while the notes present the range and possible meanings of important Greek terms and references in the poem and highlight areas of ambiguity in our understanding of Works and Days. . EURIPIDEA Collected Essays
Oxford University Press. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. 1994. First Edition. Hardcover. 0198140940 . Corners slightly rounded. DJ spine sunned and discolored. Some edgewear to DJ. ; James Diggle's groundbreaking studies on the text of Euripides culminating in his new edition of the complete plays in the Oxford Classical Texts series have won him a wide reputation as one of the leading authorities on Euripides. This collection comprises forty-one papers and reviews including five previously unpublished papers designed as a companion to the Oxford Text. The published papers and reviews have been lightly revised and updated and equipped with copious cross-references. There are full indexes. The collection not only offers a commentary on an extensive range of problematic passages in the plays; it also provides an up-to-date grammar of Euripidean usage--linguistic stylistic and metrical--and deals with many aspects of the manuscript tradition. ; 8.6 X 5.7 X 1.5 inches; 576 pages . ARISTOPHANES: FROGS Edited with Introduction and Commentary
Oxford Clarendon Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1993. First Edition. Hardcover. 0198147732 . Corners a bit rounded. DJ has very minor shelfwear. ; Among extant Greek comedies the Frogs is unique for the light it throws on Classical Greek attitudes toward tragedy and literature in general. It merits a much more extensive commentary than it has so far received and the establishment of the text itself has rested for over a century on collations which were inadequate and inaccurate. At the same time its most problematic passages have been the subject in recent years of more scholarly articles than those of any other Greek play. In this introduction edition and commentary Sir Kenneth Dover presents the relevant data arguments and considerations as fully as can reasonably be done in one volume. ; 9 x 1 x 6 Inches; 398 pages . Euripides; John Wilkins
EURIPIDES: HERACLIDAE With Introduction and Commentary
Oxford Clarendon Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 0198147589 . 240 pages; This edition and commentary provides an invaluable introduction to one of Euripides' less well-known plays and describes the enormous value of the text for our understanding of Athenian drama religion and society. Heraclidae is one of Euripides' "alphabetical" plays preserved exclusively in a Laurentian manuscript and therefore not selected in antiquity. Not even in modern times despite the excellent commentaries of Elmsley 1821 and Pearson 1907 and powerful articles by Wilamwitz has the play been given the prominence it deserves. This edition interprets the play in a wide cultural setting considering unorthodox aspects of the structure of the drama but placing particular emphasis on the cults and myths of Heracles in Attica on his apotheosis and marriage on his association with the young and most of all on the two most striking rituals in the play: the voluntary self-sacrifice of the daughter of Heracles and the conversion of Eurystheus from an enemy of Athens to a hero whose dead body will protect the city-state. The text is James Diggle's Oxford Classical Texts 1984. . Oxford Clarendon Press hardcover

These sources are supplemented by a number of citations in classical authors and by a recently published fragmentary hypothesis. Professor Diggle has examined all the manuscript evidence and offers many decipherments. He gives a text of the play and of the hypothesis an exegetical commentary prolegomena and appendices in which he discusses the treatment of the Phaethon myth in classical literature and attempts a reconstruction of the plot of the play. . TERENCE: ADELPHOE
Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1993. Softcover. 0521290015 . Very Light shelfwear. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 272 pages; The Adelphoe The Brothers of Terence is a Latin adaptation of a comedy of the same name by the Greek comic playwright Menander. In the introduction Mr Martin considers Terence in the context of Roman comedy generally and discusses the background of the Adelphoe. There is also a section on metre and scansion and a short analysis of the textual tradition. The full and detailed commentary besides elucidating the text seeks at all times to help the reader to understand the work as a play to be enjoyed. The edition is intended for use by students at school and university and for anyone wishing to read and appreciate the play in the original. . Cambridge University Press paperback
