Adolf M. Hakkert. Very Good. 1979. Softcover. 9025607969 . Very light shelfwear else Fine. Textblock is foxed. ; 265 pages; What relationship if any do the stories preserved in ancient Greek legendary traditions have to real events and circumstances of the periods and places to which they ostensibly refer A wide range of answers to this question is to be found in the works of both popular and scholarly writers not only where it has been debated explicitly but also -and more frequently- where some kind of answer seems to be presupposed in the course of their general discussions of Greek literature and history. The present book sets out to study the development and interpretation of a substantial group of Greek legends associated with one well-known figure who was said to have originated in the East. . AN HISTORICAL COMMENTARY ON THE HELLENICA OXYRHYNCHIA
Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. 1967. Hardcover. 0521043522 . Scholar's name to ffep Martin Cropp. Else book is fine. DJ has edgewear with chipping to spine ends. DJ spine is a little browned. ; Cambridge Classical Studies; 190 pages; Commentaries on the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia an anonymous history of events in the Greek world in the late fifth and early fourth centuries BC have usually dealt almost entirely with problems of the text. In this book Dr Bruce has written an historical commentary basing his work on both the London and Florence papyri which between them provide all the surviving fragments of the text. Dr Bruce begins with a brief description of the two papyri. He then discusses the Oxyrhynchus historian's style and method - his sources chronology bias interest in causation etc. The introduction ends with a rsum of the numerous theories of the author's identity Dr Bruce favours either Cratippus or an author not known to us by name at all. The main part of the commentary is arranged in the form of notes on the sections of the Greek text with occasional detailed notes on particular words or phrases. There are appendices on the Battle of Sardis and the Constitution of Boeotia; and the book concludes with a full biography. Dr Bruce's book is a complete guide available for further historical study of the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia. . Cambridge University Press hardcover

FROM GOOD GODDESS TO VESTAL VIRGINS Sex and Category in Roman Religion
Routledge. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1998. Hardcover. 0415132339 . Scholar's name to ffep R. E. Fantham. Else book is fine. 1 small closed tear to DJ 1 cm. Else Very light shelfwear to DJ. ; 0.79 x 8.43 x 5.67 Inches; 207 pages; The role of women in Roman culture and society was a paradoxical one. They enjoyed social material and financial independence yet they were denied basic constitutional rights. Although Roman history is not short of powerful female figures such as Agrippina and Livia their power stemmed from their associations with great men and was not officially recognized. Ariadne Staples' book examines how women in Rome were perceived both by themselves and by men through women's participation in Roman religion as Roman religious ritual provided the single public arena where women played a significant formal role. From Good Goddess to Vestal Virgins argues that the ritual roles played out by women were vital in defining them sexually and that these sexually defined categories spilled over into other aspects of Roman culture including political activity. Staples provides an arresting and original analysis of the role of women in Roman society which challenges traditionally held views and provokes further questions. . Routledge hardcover

Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1994. Softcover. 0521098904 . Very faint creasing to 1 corner of wraps. Minor shelfwear. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 177 pages; The theme of Sophocles' Philoctetes is of lasting significance. It revolves round Neoptolemus' struggles with his conscience and Philoctetes' strength in adversity and refusal to accept any compromise. Sophocles explores the relationship between the two central characters with powerful subtlety. The main emphasis in Professor Webster's commentary is on explaining the impact of the play through metre and language rather than on the examination and comparison of points of grammatical and syntactical usage. He deals with all the essential problems of the play at a level appropriate to the needs of students in the upper forms of schools and at university. . Cambridge University Press paperback

EURIPIDES: THE CHILDREN OF HERACLES With an Introduction Translation and Commentary.
Aris & Phillips. Near Fine. 2001. Softcover. 0856687413 . Faint crease to front wrap else fine. ; Classical Texts; 240 pages; The Children of Heracles is a powerful and challenging tragedy of exile and supplication. Driven from their homeland by Eurystheus King of Argos the children of Heracles flee as fugitives throughout Greece until they are granted protection in Athens. However their acceptance as political refugees threatens to cause civil revolt among the Athenians and hostile invasion from the Argives. The self-sacrifice of Heracles' daughter ensures a victory for Athens and the Heraclidae but Heracles' mother Alcmene refuses to spare the life of Eurystheus altlhough he is a prisoner of war protected by Athenian law. The play shows the amorality of the powerful and the vulnerability of refugees in the most disturbing terms making for a drama of continuing moral and political relevance to the modern world. . Fantham. Very light edgewear to bottom corners. ; Volume 2 Only. ; Vol. 2; 974 pages; The Cambridge History of Classical Literature provides a comprehensive critical survey of the literature of Greece and Rome from Homer till the Fall of Rome. STATIUS: THEBAID
Oxford University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1992. Hardcover. 0198147821 . Very light shelfwear to book. DJ has some creasing to front panel and sticker residue to rear panel. ; 1.18 x 8.75 x 5.75 Inches; 428 pages; This is a new translation of the Thebaid of Publius Papinius Statius an epic poem in twelve books completed in about AD 90. The Thebaid has been thought by many to stand second only to Virgil among Latin narrative poems. Its theme is the war between Eteocles and Polynices sons of Oedipus for the throne of Thebes. Rich in incident and always dramatic in tone it unfolds a panorama of human ambition and violence triumph and catastrophe. Though remaining within the Homeric and Virgilian tradition it achieves its own power and vitality in thought language and description. Held in high esteem and widely imitated in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance the Thebaid of Statius is not only a masterpiece of poetry but a compelling story at times horrifying noble and pathetic of humankind bound by the power of Fate. . In short to study the economies of the ancient world one must begin by discarding many premises that seemed self-evident before Finley showed that they were useless or misleading. These sagacious fertile and occasionally combative essays are just as electrifying today as when Finley first wrote them. . University of California Press paperback

VITA VIGILIA EST Essays in Honour of Barbara Levick
Institute of Classical Studies. Very Good. 2008. Softcover. 1905670141 . Inscribed to scholar R. E. Fantham from one of the contributors Geraldine Herbert-Brown on ffep. Light creasing to corners of wraps. Minor shelfwear. ; Institute of Classical Studies Bulletin Supplement 97; 193 pages; The new millennium sees both Pliny the Elder and his massive encyclopaedic Natural History being studied more seriously and holistically than at any time in the preceding century. The essays in this volume which honour the seminal work of Barbara Levick on the politics and society of imperial Rome above all in the period of Plinys life and literary activity further this re-assessment. They consider aspects of Plinys life and output which have not so far received serious attention. These include his value as a source for the kings of Rome and their achievements; his attitude to astronomy and natural wonders to gentilician commemoration philosophical sects Roman dress and coinage; and his moral judgements on the fall of the Republic. The essays consider the ideological climate of the Flavian period as reflected not only in Plinys attitude to the past but in his construction of Rome and Italy and his relationship to contemporary writers like Licinius Mucianus. Pliny emerges clearly as a major literary and cultural figure of the early Empire. ; Signed by Contributor . Institute of Classical Studies paperback
