‎COLLECTED ANCIENT GREEK NOVELS‎

‎University of California Press. Very Good. 1989. Softcover. 0520043065 . Bumping to top corner of book with light creasing. Crease to spine. Minor shelfwear. ; 835 pages; Prose fiction although not always associated with classical antiquity did in fact flourish in the early Roman Empire not only in realistic Latin novels but also and indeed principally in the Greek ideal romance of love and adventure to which they are related. Popular in the Renaissance these stories have been less familiar in later centuries. Translations of the Greek stories were not readily available in English before B. P. Reardons excellent volume. Nine complete stories are included here as well as ten others encompassing the whole range of classical themes: ideal romance travel adventure historical fiction and comic parody. A new foreword by J. R. Morgan examines the enormous impact this groundbreaking collection has had on our understanding of classical thought and our concept of the novel. . ‎DYNASTY AND EMPIRE IN THE AGE OF AUGUSTUS The Case of the Boscoreale Cups‎

‎University of California Press. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1995. Hardcover. 0520067738 . Inscribed by author to ffep in pencil: "A Gift from Ann Kuttner". Minor shelfwear and rubbing to boards. Dustjacket has shelfwear and rubbing with some creasing. Two tears to back panel and light chipping to heel of DJ spine. ; 465 pages; The two silver skyphoi commonly known as the Boscoreale Cups of Augustus and Tiberius are indispensable for providing the documentation of one of the only two cycles of Roman imperial state reliefs to survive from the Julio-Claudian period. Ann Kuttner offers the first comprehensive examination of these historical treasures. Kuttner studies the Cups not only from the standpoint of art history but also as they relate to Augustan ideology and politics. When she began work on this book the whereabouts of the Cups were unknown and she had to rely on the illustrations in Monuments et Memoires Fondation Eugen Pinot 1901. The rediscovery of the Cups at the Louvre in late 1990 has allowed Kuttner to examine them directly. ; Signed by Author . University of California Press hardcover‎

‎THE PLAY OF TEXTS AND FRAGMENTS Essays in Honour of Martin Cropp‎

‎Brill. Very Good with no dust jacket. 2009. Hardcover. 9004174737 . Minor shelfwear. Light bumps to one corner and along 1 edge. Else fine. ; Mnemosyne Supplements 314; 580 pages; This volume is arguably one of the most important studies of Euripides to appear in the last decade. Not only does it offer incisive examinations of many of Euripides' extant plays and their influence it also includes seminal examinations of a number of Euripides fragmentary plays. This approach represents a novel and exciting development in Euripidean studies since it is only very recently that the fragmentary plays have begun to appear in reliable and readily accessible editions. The books thirty-two contributors constitute an international 'whos who' of Euripidean studies and Athenian drama and their contributions will certainly feature in the forefront of scholarly discourse on Euripides and Greek drama for years to come. . ‎THE FAMILY IN ANCIENT ROME New Perspectives‎

‎Croom Helm. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1986. Hardcover. 0801418739 . 3 pages have indent from paperclip. Very light pencil marginalia to a few pages. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; Little has been published on the Roman family a subject of central importance to political as well as social history. It was the family that determined political power; it was within the family that the distinctive relationships of one citizen to another were forged and exemplified. The Family in Ancient Rome provides an overview of the state of research by presenting some of the most important work being done in this area. In addition to a survey of the literature on all aspects of the Roman family the book begins with a general picture of the main features of the family. More specialized essays deal with the legal evidence wills and property rights which were of particular importance for the position of women; with the link between property disposition dowry and divorce; with the authority of the male head of the household and its relation to political power; with the status of children born of unions between slaves and citizen; and with the rearing of and attitudes toward children. ; 288 pages; Isbn: 0801418739 . DJ has light creasing to head of spine. ; Leicester-Nottingham Studies in Ancient Society 2; 324 pages; The ancient Greco-Roman world was a world full of cities: not of cities in the modern sense of massive conglomerations but in a distinctive sense of communities in which countryside was dominated by urban centre. ‎THE ORIGINS OF RHETORIC IN ANCIENT GREECE‎

‎The Johns Hopkins University Press. Near Fine in Good dust jacket. 1991. Hardcover. 0801840554 . Scholar's name to ffep R. E. Fantham. Very light shelfwear to book else fine. DJ has tear to head of spine with small strip torn off. Light yellowing along top edge of DJ. Includes tipped in offprint review by Richard Martin with his initials to R. E. Fantham. ; Is it fair to judge early Greek rhetoric by the standards of Plato and Aristotle This text argues that it is not and yet this is the path taken by current scholarship on the subject. Arguing against this view this work sees early Greek rhetoric as largely unsystematic efforts to explore more by means than by precept all aspects of discourse. Replacing these early text by such treatises as the "Rhetoric" of Aristotle Cole explains can only be understood as part of a gradual process as artistic prose came to be disseminated in written texts and so available in a form that for the first time be analyzed evaluated and closely imitated. ; Ancient Society and History; 191 pages . ‎HELLENISTIC POETRY‎

‎Oxford University Press. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1988. Hardcover. 0198140401 . Scholar's name to ffep R. E. Fantham in pencil with light pencil markings on a couple of pages. Very light shelfwear to book else fine. DJ spine is sunned with tears to top of DJ spine and a few small chips. ; Special Edition for Sandpiper books -- reprint of 1988 edition. In this study of the Hellenistic poets of the third century B. C. Hutchinson provides a much-needed picture of the poetry of the period while demonstrating its quality and vitality. The work of the Hellenistic poets in the third century BC has not only an important place in Greek literature but also a particular significance for Latin poetry. Hutchinson explores the works of such writers as Theocritus Callimachus and Apollonius of Rhodes--developing a generalconception of poetry that centers around the poets' handling of tone level and form--and offers a fresh analysis of the influence of Hellenistic poetry on the city of Rome. Despite much technical work on the texts and language of these authors - Theocritus Callimachus Apollonius Rhodius and others - previous literary criticism on most of the major figures is limited in quantity and scope. He explores the work of the individual writers in turn while developing a general conception of the poetry as a whole centred around the poets' handling of tone level and form. The book concludes with a fresh approach to the influence of Hellenistic poets in Rome. All quotations in Greek or Latin have been translated by the author. ; Oxford University Press Academic Monograph Reprints; 392 pages . Oxford University Press hardcover‎

‎TRIALS OF CHARACTER The Eloquence of Ciceronian Ethos‎

‎The University of North Carolina Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1988. Hardcover. 0807817597 . Very light shelfwear to book else fine. Scholar's name to ffep R. E. Fantham. Very light edgewear to DJ else fine. ; 0.88 x 9.48 x 6.38 Inches; 224 pages; By its very nature the art of oratory involves character. Verbal persuasion entails the presentation of a persona by the speaker that affects an audience for good or ill. In this book James May explores the role and extent of Cicero's use of ethos and demonstrates its persuasive effect. May discusses the importance of ethos not just in classical rhetorical theory but also in the social political and judicial milieu of ancient Rome and then applies his insights to the oratory of Cicero. Ciceronian ethos was a complex blend of Roman tradition Cicero's own personality and selected features of Greek and Roman oratory. More than any other ancient literary genre oratory dealt with constantly changing circumstances with a wide variety of rhetorical challenges. An orator's success or failure as well as the artistic quality of his orations was largely the direct result of his responses to these circumstances and challenges. Acutely aware of his audience and its cultural heritage and steeped in the rhetorical traditions of his predecessors Cicero employed rhetorical ethos with uncanny success. May analyzes individual speeches from four different periods of Cicero's career tracing changes in the way Cicero depicted character both his own and others' as a source of persuasion changes intimately connected with the vicissitudes of Cicero's career and personal life. He shows that ethos played a major role in almost every Ciceronian speech that Cicero's audiences were conditioned by common beliefs about character and finally that Cicero's rhetorical ethos became a major source for persuasion in his oratory. . ‎LATIN LITERATURE FROM SENECA TO JUVENAL A Critical Study‎

‎Oxford University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 0198146906 . Minor shelfwear to boards. Light pencil markings to a few pages. ; 384 pages; G. O. Hutchinson explores central aspects of the period in Latin literature often depreciatingly termed 'Silver'. It is unusual in embracing both poetry and prose and in offering close literary discussion of a large number of particular passages. It is a selective and comparative study--throwing fresh light on the period as a whole on individual authors and on differences and affinities between genres. Most space is given to epic and tragedy and to the prose of Seneca and Tacitus; but Juvenal Martial the Younger Pliny and other authors are also treated. The author also considers large features of genre and relates these to fundamental elements of style and to the treatment of some vital themes. He gives the reader a feeling for this brilliant and extraordinary writing and a sense of the excitement and fascination of the literary period. All Latin in the text is translated. .
