‎Romae Rome: Ex Typographia Medicea 1619. Folio 33.5x21 cm. pp. 4 9-462 2 with at recto the printer's letter repeated with the date of the 1591 original edition blank at verso. Contemporary green vellum spine with raised bands and gilt-decorated compartments red Morocco label marbled endpapers edges dyed red. Title printed in red and black with Medici's woodcut coat-of-arms printer's advice "Typographus lectori". With 149 text woodcuts by Leonardo Parassole c.1570-c.1630 after Antonio Tempesta 1555-1630 their monograms appearing on a number of the illustrations. The woodcuts are remarkable examples of Tempesta's work notable for their clarity of composition and their didactic narrative of the episodes depicted. Ex libris Luigi Bossi Milan 1758-1835 with his engraved heraldic bookplate to front pastedown along with T. Fenteman & Sons Leeds booksellers label to upper corner. Title-page lightly browned boards faded and discoloured some occasional light toning generally a very good copy printed on thick paper the woodcuts in strong impressions throughout. Rare 1619 reissue or of the original 1591 stock of the Arabic Medicean Gospels. The text lines are almost identical with those of the Arabic issue but now have an interlinear Latin version added which was prepared by Antonius Sionita. In 1584 the last year of the papacy of Gregory XIII who had constantly endeavoured to effect a union between the Church of Rome and the eastern Christians Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici the brother and later the successor of the Grand Duke of Tuscany founded a printing press in Rome with a vast selection of oriental types cut by the French typographer Robert Granjon. Run by a versatile orientalist Giovan Battista Raimondi the press had various aims. One was to produce propaganda which would attract the eastern Christians to Roman Catholicism. Another was to corner the publishing market in an area where typography was prohibited and to make a financial profit from the sale in the east of books printed in Arabic. The third aim was to further European knowledge and to provide good editions of Arabic versions of certain standard non-religious texts. These included the writings of Avicenna al-Idrisi's geographical compendium al-Tusi's adaptation of Euclid's text on geometry and various works on Arabic grammar and syntax. The first major publication was the 1591 edition of the Gospels. This copy has an interlinear Latin translation but the work was also issued solely in Arabic. It contains 149 fine woodcut illustrations made by Leonardo Parasole mainly after designs by one of the best known Florentine artists of his day Antonio Tempesta who owed much of his fame to the frescoes he painted in the Vatican and in a number of Roman palaces. The woodcut in the Gospel of St Mark of the presentation of the head of John the Baptist to Salome Mark 6:28 by a man in Turkish dress reminds us of the common association between the great enemy of Christendom in the sixteenth century and the ancient heathens. The Arabic text is printed in Robert Granjon's famous large fount generally considered the first satisfactory Arabic printing type; as all early printed editions of the Arabic Gospels it is based on the Alexandrian Vulgate cf. Darlow/M. 1636. The Latin version is by Leonardo Sionita. The work begins with page 9 without a title-page or any preliminary matter at all: "the intended prefatory matter was apparently never published" Darlow/M. On the frontispiece, the leader of the UAR, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser's iconic words with his portrait by Moheeb. The pamphlet includes the UAR's vision usually and its social and economic policies, projects, Suez Canal, Al-Wady al-Gadid, industry, navigation, mining, oil and its industry, agriculture and agricultural reforms, livestock, culture and education, medicine, water, tourism, etc. Extremely rare.‎

It shows Lake Erçek located on the east of Lake Van which is an endorheic salt lake in Van Province in eastern Turkey, about 30 kilometres; on north side, Bargiri place where the oldest district of Van city; on east, Turkish and Azerbaijani and Iranian borders and Hoy city of the West Azerbaijan; and on west, map shows Malazgird [Malazgirt]. This is one the serie of the Bonn projection maps which are the first map series in modern techniques in Turkey and the Ottoman Empire. In order to produce these maps covering Turkish territory, Reconnaissance Branch was incorporated into The Mapping Commission. The maps were produced in the datum based on the latitude and longitude of Ayasofya Mosque in equal area Bonn Projection. The field works for the 123 sheets covering the country were conducted by 76 staff. The production was completed in 18 years starting from east west. Field works continued without stopping except in years 1914 and 1920. This map series called also reconnaissance maps contributed a lot to producing 1:25.000 scale maps.‎

Dr. Mohammed Said Farsi, (1937-2019), was a former Lord Mayor of Jeddah, and a man of such aesthetic integrity that he traveled the world to meet with sculptors, painters, and musicians before replanning the city according to his own meticulously constructed vision. (Source: The Rake). Dr. Farsi was a visionary civic leader and philanthropist who is widely considered to be the father of modern Jeddah. He presided over a five-fold increase in the city's population, led its transformation, including creating the famous Jeddah corniche - a unique public space and an open-air gallery. Dr. Farsi, a noted art lover, was also the first mayor to introduce Western art and sculpture to an Arab city. He is survived by his son Hani Farsi and former wife Naglaa Asaad. Born in Makkah in 1937, Dr. M S Farsi qualified as an architect in Alexandria and returned to Saudi Arabia in the early 1960s. He entered government service in 1963 and rose rapidly. Just two years later he was appointed to the post of Planning Officer for the Western Region of Saudi Arabia. Covering an area larger than the United Kingdom and having within its boundaries the port city of Jeddah and the Holy Cities of Makkah and Medinah, this territory was in effect Saudi Arabia's window to the world and it was under Dr. Farsi's aegis that plans for these three cities were drawn up; given the immense significance of this work, Dr. Farsi liaised with the very highest levels of government. In 1972, Dr. Farsi became Mayor of Jeddah, a city that had grown from the historic walled city of his childhood to a large modern conurbation of more than 300,000 people. Until the middle of the following decade, Dr. Farsi presided over a period of spectacular and unprecedented growth for the city, which saw its population increase five-fold. That chaos was averted in the face of such a population explosion was due in no small part to Dr. Farsi's enlightened leadership. It is remarkable that in the midst of creating much-needed infrastructure, Dr. Farsi found time to create a city that was as beautiful as it was functional; with a carefully preserved historic center, gracious boulevards, and charming parks. A collector of Islamic and Western art, Dr. Farsi's vision as a city planner was to integrate important contemporary art into public spaces, thus enriching the lives of the inhabitants and reflecting the on-going cultural significance of the city, and his mayoralty is today remembered for its artistic flowering and for being at the forefront of design. Dr. Farsi made use of local artists and materials as well as commissioning works from many great Western masters, including Henry Moore, Victor Vasarely, Alexander Calder, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Joan Miró, Cesar Baldaccini, Sylvestre Monnier, Jean Arp, and Jacques Lipchitz, among many other stellar names in the international art world. He was the first mayor to introduce Western art and sculpture to an Arab city, as well as the first to display art that depicted the physical human form. At the time he stepped down, in 1986, Jeddah boasted over 400 pieces of public art. When he retired in 1986, Dr. Farsi returned to one of his primary passions - education.
