‎Summary Fleeing his North-African homeland for Italy, Constantine the African arrived in Salerno and then joined the abbey of Monte Cassino south of Rome in c. 1077. He dedicated his life to the translation of more than two dozen medical texts from Arabic into Latin. These great efforts produced the first substantial written body of medical theory and practice in medieval Europe. His most important contribution, an encyclopedia he called the Pantegni (The Complete Art), was translated and adapted from the Complete Book of the Medical Art by the Persian physician 'Ali ibn al-'Abb?s al-Ma??s? (d. 982). This monograph focuses on the oldest manuscript of the Pantegni,Theorica, which represents a work-in-progress with numerous unusual features. This study, for the first time, identifies Monte Cassino as the origin of this oldest Pantegni manuscript, and asserts that it was made during Constantine's lifetime. It further demonstrates how a skilled team of scribes and scholars assisted the translator in the complex process of producing this Latin version of the Arabic text. Several members of this production team are identified, both in the Pantegni manuscript and in other copies of Cassinese manuscripts. The book breaks new ground by identifying a range of manuscripts produced at Monte Cassino under Constantine's direct supervision, as evidenced by their material features, script, and contents. In rare detail, this study explores some of the challenges met by 'Team Constantine' as they sought to reveal new knowledge to the West, which in turn revolutionized medical understanding throughout medieval Europe. This is really a quite remarkable study, utterly transformative of our understanding of one of the turning points in the history of Western civilization, the moment when Greco-Arabic medicine was introduced into the Latin European world. ‎When viewed retrospectively, the period between the eleventh and the fifteenth centuries was a phase of European history that was characterized by a radical and fundamental media transformation. Before this time, the vast majority of the population had never encountered the written word in their day-to-day activities. From the beginning of the second millennium, however, texts began to appear in, and influence, almost every sphere of human life. Medieval written texts were subject to revision, copying, embellishments, and deletions; they were read silently and aloud, and they were recited in a variety of contexts. This CD-ROM and book, Transforming the Medieval World, presents these changes dynamically by linking texts and images from this period, and by providing detailed commentaries on each of them. The multimedia environment offered on the CD visualizes these textual transformations and illustrates the adaptability and dynamism of writing and its reception. The uses of writing in this early phase of intensive European literacy are analysed in eleven separate multimedia presentations, which are almost all based on research carried out by the Special Research Unit (SFB) between 1986 and 1999. The CD also contains an anthology of important essays, which provide the user with further reading materials, as well as a general bibliography. The book which accompanies the CD-ROM facilitates the use of the CD itself, and provides the various multimedia presentations in written format. As such, Transforming the Medieval World will be invaluable to both scholars and students interested in medieval literacy.‎

Pubblicata a Venezia nel 1514, la "Theorica et pratica de modo scribendi" è l'opera d'esordio di un matematico ferrarese, Sigismondo Fanti, che nel 1521 era "inzegnero general" della Serenissima Repubblica e che è noto al lettore di cose cinquecentesche soprattutto per le quartine oracolari del Triompho di fortuna (1527). L'opera era il punto di arrivo della prima stagione di un dibattito che nel Quattrocento aveva coinvolto artisti come Leon Battista Alberti, Mantegna e Leonardo, umanisti e antiquari come Felice Feliciano, matematici come Luca Pacioli, e a sua volta inaugurava la nuova stagione dei trattati di scrittura, destinata a lasciare tracce significative nella cultura grafica della modernità, e non solo di quella italiana. In quattro libri la Theorica offriva una trattazione sistematica della materia, che veniva presentata come un momento fondamentale nella formazione professionale e morale di ogni scrivente. Il primo libro, in particolare, ne illustrava gli aspetti tecnici, sia quelli materiali (si parlava della carta, dell'inchiostro, della penna) che quelli più propriamente teorici (a partire dalle logiche geometriche implicate, soprattutto quelle euclidee). I tre successivi si impegnavano nell'illustrazione analitica, condotta lettera per lettera, dei più importanti modelli grafici allora in corso.‎
