br. Spitzer si propone di ricostruire la base su cui si formò in Occidente il concetto di armonia universale racchiuso nella parola tedesca "Stimmung". Per far questo, indaga la storia di un intero "campo semantico", nei suoi sviluppi in epoche e in letterature diverse. La storia dell'armonia universale è la storia della continuità della civiltà classica nel Medioevo cristiano e nella moderna civiltà laica: le pagine di Spitzer mostrano il formarsi della solidarietà culturale europea e, al tempo stesso, il suo disintegrarsi dall'Illuminismo in poi.
