Signed limited edition of the address given by Maugham upon the Library's acceptance of the original autograph manuscript of his masterpiece Of Human Bondage. Octavo original boards. One of 500 copies signed by W. Somerset Maugham on the front free endpaper. In fine condition. Accompanied by the original accompanying program which is in very good condition. The program contains a brief description of the original autograph manuscript which notes that it is contained in 16 notebooks written on the recto of each leaf begun in 1911 and finished in 1914. “Maugham’s longest and most ambitious novel in which ‘fact and fiction are inextricably mixed’ draws heavily upon the author’s own youth with circumstances and names scarcely altered†Parker 63. “As early as 1911 Maugham had retired temporarily from the theatre to work on his long novel Of Human Bondage. He was to correct the proofs under the admiring eyes of Desmond MacCarthy in a small hotel at Malo near Dunkirk; the two men were drivers in an ambulance unit for which they had volunteered at the outbreak of war in 1914… Of Human Bondage was published in 1915. It was less noticed in wartime London than in New York where Theodore Dreiser reviewed it with enthusiasm. It remains Maugham’s most impressive literary work and by the time of his death 1965 was said to have sold ten million copies†DNB. Garden City: Garden City Publishing Company 1934. Motion picture tie-in edition with a wonderful pictorial wraparound band. This book was issued to coincide with the release of the 1934 John Cromwell directed film version of the novel starring Leslie Howard Bette Davis Frances Dee Kay Johnson Reginald Denny Alan Hale and Reginald Owen. The wraparound band is four and a half inches wide and illustrated with black & white still photographs from the film. Across the top of the front panel portion is printed: “W. SOMERSET MAUGHAM’S GREAT NOVEL from which the LESLIE HOWARD Picture was taken - 766 Pages - THE COMPLETE STORY.†The photographs on the front panel portion is a collage of scenes showing Leslie Howard twice in three photographs with Bette Davis and Frances Dee. On the spine portion is a large close-up portrait of Leslie Howard’s head. The book itself is a very good copy with some flaking to the gilt-stamping in a very good dust jacket with some chipping mostly at head of spine some tears and some edge creasing. The dust jacket is yellow and has a quote from Theodore Dreiser “It sings it has color. It has rapture. In viewing it one finds nothing to criticize or regret.†Very scarce in this form. Somerset Maugham These notes were made in China most of them in pencil on paper bought by the wayside while I was being carried by my horse on the long journey from Chang-King to Cheng Tri; & I meant them to serve as material for a book. A series of short sketches composed during his journey along the Yangtze River in 1919–1920 W. The figures he depicts - missionaries army officers and company managers - often appear ill at ease in rural China. Maugham's later novel The Painted Veil 1925 also draws on this experience.This copy was presented Syrie Maugham to whom the book is dedicated to the painter and interior and textile designer Allan Walton 1891-1948. Syrie daughter of Thomas Barnardo was a leading interior designer of the 1920s and '30s renowned for her influential all-white decorative schemes. She was first married to Henry Wellcome before leaving him for Maugham; the couple had one child Liza and married in 1917 divorcing in 1929 after a highly publicised separation. It is a series of short sketches Maugham made during a trip along the Yangtze River in 1919–1920 and although ostensibly about China the book is equally focused on the various westerners he met during the trip and their struggles to accept or adapt to the cultural differences they encounter which are often as enormous and as alienating as the country itself.
