Die vorliegende Arbeit versteht sich als Herausforderung an die textkritische Theorie und als Anregung für künftige Editionen, insofern sie den Zusammenhang von Interpretation und Textgeschichte an einem poetischen Text zu begreifen und darzustellen sucht. Sie will damit der "objektiven", auf abstrakt-allgemeinen Grundsätzen beruhenden Textkritik nicht etwa die Interpretation als subjektive Meinung entgegensetzen, sondern sie will diesen Gegensatz überwinden, indem sie die Textkritik dort aufgreift und weiterführt, wo diese mit ihren Grundsätzen nicht weitergekommen ist und die Entscheidungen ins Belieben der einzelnen Herausgeber gestellt hat. Sie zeigt am Beispiel einer Dichtung, des West-oestlichen Divans, daß hier trotz dreier kritischer Ausgaben die entscheidenden Fragen der Textkritik offen geblieben sind, und sucht diese dann durch Einbeziehung der Interpretation von Gedichten und ihren Lesarten zu beantworten. Ergebnis ist nicht der "beste Text", der dem Verständnis des Bearbeiters am ehesten ent-spricht, sondern der richtige Text, der den Leser durch die Textgeschichte zum authentischen Text zurückführt und ihm so ein besseres Verständnis der Dichtung ermöglicht.
