High on the Wild with Hemingway A Pictorial Recollection
Caldwell: Caxton Printers. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1968. First Edition. Hardcover. 343 pages; Clean and tight in original cloth binding with pictorial endpapers in bright fresh dustjacket red NOT faded. A pictorial recollection of "Papa" Hemingway by a close friend and photographer. Spans the years from 1939 to 1961 highlighting Hemingway's time in Idaho. Lloyd "Pappy" Arnold was Sun Valley Resort's first official photographer. Averell Harriman of the Union Pacific which owned the resort lured Ernest Hemingway and his soon to be third wife Martha Gellhorn to visit Sun Valley in September 1939. "Pappy" Arnold was assigned to accompany Hemingway on hunting and fishing expeditions and other excursions in the area. Arnold himself a serious outdoorsman introduced Hemingway to another hunter Gene Van Guilder and to the area's best guide Taylor "Beartracks" Williams. Later fall of 1941 Williams introduced Hemingway to the "Old Timer" who related to Hemingway and Arnold his numerous old tales of Custer's death at the Greasy Grass and the Wagonbox fight where dozens of woodcutters fought two thousand Sioux. This book of wonderful photographs and vivid reminiscences is a well-spring for Hemingway enthusiasts. . Caxton Printers hardcover
