Glassco, John
Memoirs of Montparnasse
Introduction by Louis Begley.. Memoirs of Montparnasse is a delicious book about being young, restless, reckless, and without cares. It is also the best and liveliest of the many chronicles of 1920s Paris and the exploits of the lost generation. In 1928, nineteen-year-old John Glassco escaped Montreal and his overbearing father for the wilder shores of Montparnasse. He remained there until his money ran out and his health collapsed, and he enjoyed every minute of his stay. Remarkable for their candor and humor, Glassco's memoirs have the daft logic of a wild but utterly absorbing adventure, a tale of desire set free that is only faintly shadowed by sadness at the inevitable passage of time. 236p. Gregorio Fuentes Ernest Hemingway.
The Real Old Man and the Sea. Signed by Gregorio Fuentes.
Signed by Gregorio Fuentes 1897-2002. Best known to the angling community as the guide to Ernest Hemingway while he captained the Pilar from the late 1930s until 1961 when Hemingway died by suicide Gregorio Fuentes led an amazing life prior to and during his time with the famed author. Meeting for the first time in 1928 it was a decade later that Hemingway sought out Fuentes to work on the newly built Pilar first as a mate and ultimately as the Captain which incidentally was willed to Fuentes by Hemingway but "appropriated" by the Cuban government during the revolution before he could take ownership. There are a good number of folks who regard Gregorio as the basis for the character Santiago in Hemingway's novel the The Old Man and the Sea and a good number who dont - Hemingway stated the character "was based on no one in particular". You can draw your own conclusions on that one. The signed illustrated magazine leaf under glass measures 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 within an Ash frame of 10 1/2 x 12 1/2. Capt. Greg Poland a former FBI Agent who made a decision years ago to pursue a career as a fishing guide in pursuit of Floridas salt water game fish rather than chase bad folks visited with Gregorio Fuentes in 1997. There is a photograph of Fuentes and Poland together attached to reverse of the frame showing Mr. Fuentes signing this illustration - Hemingway the Pilar and Fuentes. In fine condition. Signed by Pilar Captain. unknown

Gregory H. Hemingway
Papa; A Personal Memoir With a Preface by Norman Mailer

Contents appear as unopened unread & unblemished with burnt orange and black cloth covered boards. DJ displays minor surface/edge/wear as shown.

Gregory Hemingway known as Mr. Gig or Gigi to his family was Ernest Hemingway's youngest of three sons; his mother was Pauline Papa's second wife. This is his memoir of his father and it begins and ends with Papa's suicide and the ways in which that trauma shaped Gigi's life. It is a short but monumentally touching and surprisingly well-written book; I think it is the most moving biography of Papa who presumably you know I adore that I have read. While Gigi does relate several of his father's uglier moments including crimes against his son he emphasizes Papa's humanity and good qualities. The story told here seems to be of a fundamentally good man who got sicker and sicker at the end – though I think he always struggled with mental illness from being cross-dressed as a toddler through pursuit of success fame and the fading of his talent – and fell apart. There are other perspectives out there; many biographers and commentators see Hemingway as a monster and I accept that that is one perspective and has evidence to back it up. But I'm always drawn to the outlook that he deserves our pity for the illness he struggled with that finally killed him; and that is more what we get here.

Gigi tells heartwarming stories and some bad ones like Papa blaming Gigi for Pauline's death. He shows what good advice Papa gave; he was a good teacher. He addresses some of the myths surrounding his larger-than-life father even though he is often unable to refute or confirm them because he was so small or living with his mother. And it's all so beautifully done! Who knew Gigi was a bit of a writer himself Make note of the tale of his plagiarized short story back when he still hoped to follow in his father's footsteps.
This book was like a gift to me from yet another tragic Hemingway man. It gave me lovely appealing moments with Papa as well as those ugly moments in which he could be so vicious. It was beautifully written. I loved getting to know Gigi better; he struck me as a very likeable sympathetic man. But it was also sad as reading about the Hemingways always is.

Shipping/Insurance/Included within the Continental U.S. FREE SHIPPING

Extra Charges for Shipments Outside U.S.A. and Expedited Shipments.

Houghton Mifflin Co hardcover
