HEMINGWAY Ernest.
The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories.
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1938. Presentation copy inscribed by the author Octavo. Original red calico-grain cloth spine lettered in gilt on black panels front cover with facsimile signature in black. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Gilt to spine a little rubbed internally fresh in the jacket with slightly faded spine panel head of spine creased and nicked a little rubbing to extremities. An excellent copy. First edition first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by Hemingway on the front free endpaper "To Cuyler Stevens with all good luck Ernest Hemingway" with Cuyler Stevens's bookplate to the front pastedown. Hemingway is known to have inscribed copies of several of his books to Ralph Cuyler Stevens 1903-1965 including Winner Take Nothing the Goodwin-Neville copy The Torrents of Spring and a copy of The Sun Also Rises which we have handled. Cuyler Stevens entered Princeton in 1922. "At Princeton he made a host of friends and was known for his story telling ability and wonderful sense of humor. Cuyler wrote for the Princeton Tiger was a member of the Glee Club Triangle Club Nassau Herald Board and Campus Club. After graduation he went into the business world. But Cuyler was always interested in advertising so he left the Prudential Insurance Co. in 1934 to join J. Walter Thompson Co. as a copy writer". The exact circumstances under which he and Hemingway became acquainted are not known. But we have traced a possible connection during Stevens's stint at J. Walter Thompson. A. E. Hotchner mentions JWT in a letter to Hemingway of 21 February 1951 discussing a deal to adapt Hemingway short stories for television: "In the past two months I have talked to most everybody in the business. So you know the lode has been worked here's the people I've had dealings with. Rieber at J. Walter Thompson. I think we're on solid ground and that we will keep the name okay with healthy payments to Dr. Hemingstein" DeFazio p. 118. In 1954 Cuyler Stevens became vice-president of another large agency Cunningham & Walsh Inc. He remained there until he retired in 1962 the year after Hemingway's death and moved to Spain. Hanneman A.16a; Grissom A.16.1. Princeton Alumni Weekly Vol. 66 19 October 1965; The Princeton University Library Chronicle Vol. 20; DeFazio ed. The Fifth Column & Four Unpublished Stories Of The Spanish Civil War
New York. 1969. Scribners. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Slightly Worn Dustjacket. 151 pages. hardcover. Jacket design by Michele Maldeau. FROM THE PUBLISHER - The three-act play and the hitherto uncollected stories contained in this book represent the first literary fruits of the active months 1937-1939 Ernest Hemingway spent in Spain covering the Spanish Civil War as a correspondent for the North American Newspaper Alliance and helping to film battle scenes for the motion picture THE SPANISH EARTH. Although based directly on first-hand experiences at the Hotel Florida and Chicotes bar in Madrid and on his visits to the various fronts all five works show the effects of a great writers creative imagination transforming ephemeral raw material into the timelessness of literature. In THE FIFTH COLUMN Hemingway conveys the feverish life in Madrid under siege: the daily horrors of the Rebel bombardment the incongruous humor the contest in duplicity and brutality between Loyalist counter-espionage agents and the fascist enemy within the city the futility of trying to establish between a man and woman any relationship deeper or more permanent than casual sexual adventure. Each of the four stories depicts a different aspect of the war. In the first the narrator recaptures the remorse of helping to have an old acquaintance picked up as a spy; in the second he tells a tragic-comic little tale about the callous slaying of an exuberant wedding guest by a group of soldiers in Chicotes bar. The third story describes his efforts to entertain and distract an American tank officer on the eve of an obviously doomed Loyalist offensive. The last dramatizes the deep hatred of a Spanish soldier for all the foreigners involved in the war. These were themes that Hemingway was to orchestrate fully in his great masterpiece FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS. Taken by themselves they have produced four shorter works of incomparable poignancy and brilliance. inventory #2821 hardcover

Charles Scribner's Sons 1938. Hardcover. Good/Poor. Later printing with the publisher seal but NOT the "A" on the copyright page. The volume is bumped on the spine has a touch of fraying on the crown and the spine is rubbed and lightly sunned. The pastedowns and endpapers have areas of darkening especially around the gutters and the pages are lightly toned. The "dust jacket" which is slightly taller than the book includes the rear panel and spine which has a chipped crown touching the lettering. There is a horizontal crease running through these remains. This is a book which would look good on a shelf. Probably best to leave it there. Charles Scribner's Sons hardcover
