Hugo Victor
THE TOILERS OF THE SEA
New York: The Heritage Press 1961. While Hugo is celebrated today in the U.S. for "Les Miserables" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" this work "The Toilers of the Sea" written while Hugo was in exile from France is considered by many critics to be among his best work. The book has been the basis for at least six films the latest in 1953 directed by Raoul Walsh. It is a fantasy about Gilliatt a poor Guernsey fisherman who succeeds in winning the hand of his beloved by salvaging her upper class father's steamship from the sea battling among other dangers a giant octopus. Gilliatt's success turns to ironic failure when he learns his beloved has already accepted a marriage proposal from a young cleric. Unwilling to let her break her vow Gilliatt ends his life by drowning himself in the sea he fought so hard to defeat. Besides being a romantic adventure novel and a celebration of the Guernsey Islanders the story is often considered a metaphor for the impact of the Industrial Revolution on Europe's working classes. Originally published in 1866 this is the First Printing First Heritage Press Edition. Translated by Isabel F. Hapgood with an introduction by Matthew Johnson and illustrated with wood engravings byTranquillo Marangoni. Included in this edition for the first time in an English edition is the long chapter "The Sea and the Wind" in Book Third Chapter Two translated by David M Glixon. About 6 1/2 x 10 inches 579 pages on paper with a cream-white vellum finish designed to best display Marangoni's illustrations. It is bound in light green cloth-covered boards with a pictorial design and the title stamped in dark green on the front cover and a dark green title box with silver lettering on the spine. It is protected by a silver paper-covered slipcase that shows moderate rubbing as well as wear at the corners and and edges. The book itself has only a single significant flaw common to this Heritage Press edition -- a sun-faded spine o/w it is complete clean and unmarked; binding is tight and square. A very decent copy for reading or study. . Hard Cover. Very Good. The Heritage Press Hardcover
