Name and stamp on coverCover has wear soiling tears and chips. Tear to last page also. Karl Wilhelm Julius Hugo Riemann 18 July 1849 - 10 July 1919 was a German music theorist and composer. He was with the Leipzig Conservatory. Riemann was an influential music theorist. In his publications and lectures he coined various terms which are still in use such as the harmonic function theory therein popular terms such as the tonic the dominant the subdominant and the parallel. In addition the term and theory of the metric and rhythmic Phrase a basic element of today's music education originate in Riemann. Among his best-known works are the Musik-Lexikon 1882 a complete dictionary of music and musicians the Handbuch der Harmonielehre a work on the study of harmony and the Lehrbuch des Contrapunkts a similar work on counterpoint. He was an advocate of harmonic dualism and his theory of harmonic function is the foundation of harmonic theory. He also elaborated a set of harmonic transformations that was adapted by the American theorist David Lewin and eventually evolved into a significant strain of neo-Riemannian theory. Nikolay Dmitriyevich Kashkin 27 November 1839 - 15 March 1920 was a Russian music critic as well as a professor of piano and music theory at the Moscow Conservatory for 33 years 1866-96 and 1905-08. Kashkin was a self-taught musician who had started giving piano lessons by the time he was 13 years old. In 1860 he traveled to Moscow for further study in piano with Alexandre Dubuque. There he met Herman Laroche Nikolai Rubinstein and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. He contributed music criticism primarily to the Russian Register and the Moscow Register sometimes under the pseudonym "Nikolai Dmitriev". As a critic Kashkin would do valuable service in the promotion of Tchaikovsky's music. It was he who provided the epithet "Little Russian" for Tchaikovsky's Second Symphony. Tchaikovsky dedicated the song "Not a Word O My Friend" Op. 6 No. 2 1869 to him. Kashkin published his recollections of Tchaikovsky three years after the composer's death. Yurgenson paperback‎
