‎KIM‎

‎1901. in 1901 dust jacket London: Macmillan and Co. 1901. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth with Ganesha device in gilt with dust jacket.

First English Edition of the book that "is acknowledged as Kipling's masterpiece in fiction. The novel is the finest written about the India of the British Empire" CGEL. It follows the adventures of an orphan son of a British soldier who is raised by an Indian woman becomes a disciple to a Lama and ultimately becomes an undercover agent as well. The illustrations are by John Lockwood Kipling the author's father. The American edition is considered to have been published earlier though in the same month as the English one. As with most of Kipling's British editions published by Macmillan the binding is red cloth with in gilt the "Ganesha" device -- an elephant's head with a swastika the latter had been a ubiquitous symbol in India for millennia; its use ceased in the early 1930s when events in Germany gave the symbol a whole new meaning. This volume is in bright just-about-fine condition just a touch of wear at the head of the spine. Included is the quite scarce 1901 dust jacket in its first state listing on the rear panel 14 titles in the Uniform Edition with THE NAULAHKA at the bottom and with KIM at the top with no statement of print number. The jacket is in good-to-very good condition spine quite darkened so as to be illegible wear particularly at the ends of the jacket's spine. Richards A174; Stewart 254; Livingston 250. One of the books selected as a "Modern Library 100" for the 20th Century seldom seen in jacket. unknown books‎

‎Garden City NY: Doubleday Page & Company 1922. First edition of what many consider Kipling's masterpiece. Octavo original cloth original publisher's decorated dark green cloth with gilt titles to the spine and front panel top edge gilt illustrated. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Kim unfolds against the backdrop of The Great Game the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. The novel made the term "Great Game" popular and introduced the theme of great power rivalry and intrigue. It is set after the Second Afghan War which ended in 1881 but before the Third probably in the period 1893 to 1898. The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people culture and varied religions of India. "The book presents a vivid picture of India its teeming populations religions and superstitions and the life of the bazaars and the road." Considered by many to be Kipling's masterpiece opinion appears varied about its consideration as children's literature or not. Roger Sale in his history of children's literature concludes "Kim is the apotheosis of the Victorian cult of childhood but it shines now as bright as ever long after the Empire's collapse." Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2003 the book was listed on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novel." John was killed in the Battle of Loos causing his family immense grief and placing a great strain on the marriage as Kipling's wife had strongly opposed his enlisting. ‎KIPLING RUDYARD‎

‎Kipling suggests a plot change for writer friend H. Rider Haggard and sketches a gyroscope to clarify his idea for Haggard's book "When the World Shook." Autograph Letter Signed with Illustration 3 pages on his emblematic Burwash stationery bifold small 8vo Sussex Jan. 18 1917. Signed with initials "R.K" and with initialed transmittal envelope‎

‎Kipling corresponds with fellow writer H. Rider Haggard whom he calls "Dear Old Man" mainly discussing Haggard's last important novel "When the World Shook." "Your Oro is no small person - a gent with a delicate mind and insensitive leanings. Note however that the idea of a great gyroscope that goes out of control has been used. It was created for demonstration purposes slipped on its base and ground a hall full of people to rags. Put on your scale it's a simply hellish idea." Here Kipling illustrates the gyroscope in a small sketch and suggests an alternative gyroscope that shifts internal strata and tilts the earth. "Get the thing to unchain some inconceivably vast.heated rocks loose. The girl could stop it at the last minute of course." He describes Haggard's account of Theodore Roosevelt as "most interesting. I don't think he need worry.about coming over. He doubts that many in England would show interest in discussing American attitudes. . Europe was embroiled in the first World War at this time January 1917 prior to the US entry about four months after Kipling wrote to Haggard. Kipling signs with initials "R. K." With holograph envelope initialed in lower left corner. Condition: Visible rust stains on lower portion of first page. Kipling enjoyed Haggard's completed novel which reflected Kipling's suggestion according to D. S. Higgins "Rider Haggard: The Great Storyteller." 1981. In an earlier biography of Haggard "Rider Haggard: His Life & World" Morton Cohen 1960 the second edition 1968 Cohen noted that Kipling provided the idea for "When the World Shook." Kipling's comments on Roosevelt were copied by Haggard in his diary entry for Jan. 19 1917. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in English in both prose and verse in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature making him the first English language writer to receive the prize and to date he remains its youngest recipient. Among other honors he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood all of which he declined. A wonderful letter. ‎LETTERS OF MARQUE‎

‎1891. Allahabad: A.H. Wheeler & Co. 1891. 4 preliminary 5 pp undated ads. Original diagonally-divided red and blue cloth.

First Suppressed Edition. A.H. Wheeler publisher of the "Indian Railway Series" had been Kipling's authorized publisher in India. However after Kipling left India for England Wheeler promptly prepared for publication three more collections of Kipling pieces without authority: THE CITY OF DREADFUL NIGHT AND OTHER SKETCHES THE SMITH ADMINISTRATION and LETTERS OF MARQUE. Kipling insisted that all three editions be entirely destroyed and today there is only one known copy of the first title and only six known copies of the second title. But LETTERS OF MARQUE does turn up: although it was estimated that only about 100 out of 1000 printed copies escaped destruction the book today does not seem to be that scarce. This copy as with most known copies has a Wheeler price stamp on the front free endpaper plus a stamp showing this copy's date of dispatch from the publisher's premises 17 Nov '91 -- the book was published in October. The volume is in very good-plus condition with a bit of wear at one corner of the spine and the typical minor "lifting" of the cloth. For some reason this book almost always turns up in this approximate condition. Richards A61 citing ink-stamped dates ranging from 5 Oct 1891 to 11 Jan 1892; most copies we have seen bore a date in November; Stewart 95; Livingston 74. unknown books‎
