‎Barrack-Room Ballads and Other Verses Together With Departmental Ditties.‎

‎New York: United States Book Company 1892. Scarce early printing of perhaps Kipling's most popular poetry collection. Octavo original wrappers as issued. In near fine condition. Exceptionally rare. Written in vernacular dialect Kipling's The Barrack Room Ballads contains some of Kipling's most well-known work including the poems "Gunga Din" "Tommy" "Mandalay" and "Danny Deever" which established his early fame as a poet. The first poems were published in the Scots Observer in the first half of 1890 and collected in Barrack-Room Ballads and Other Verses in 1892. Kipling later returned to the theme in a group of poems collected in The Seven Seas under the same title. A third group of vernacular Army poems from the Boer War titled "Service Songs" and published in The Five Nations 1903 can be considered part of the Ballads as can a number of other uncollected pieces. ‎The Five Nations.‎

‎London: Methuen and Co 1903. Large paper edition of Kipling's notable poetry collection. Large octavo original quarter parchment over paper-covered boards. One of 200 copies on handmade paper. In fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco and chemise case. First published in 1903 Kipling's The Five Nations included a number of new poems as well as several that had been previously published notably Recessional of 1897. In 1903 the United Kingdom consisted of four nations: England Ireland Scotland and Wales. It was soon suggested that Kipling's "five nations" were the "five free nations of Canada Australia New Zealand South Africa i.e. Cape Colony and 'the islands of the sea' i.e. the British Isles" - all dominated by Britons; and except in the last case by recent settlers. That suggestion was endorsed some one hundred years later. Methuen and Co hardcover books‎

‎Captains Courageous. A Story of the Grand Banks.‎

‎London: Macmillan 1897. First edition of Kipling's richly detailed tale of American deep-sea fishing with frontispiece and 21 illustrations by I.W. Taber. Octavo original blue cloth elegantly stamped in gilt. In near fine condition with light shelfwear. An exceptional example. Like his two Jungle Books Kipling wrote this morality tale of life aboard a New England fishing boat while living near Brattleboro Vermont his wife's hometown. The book thus contains "something of his feelings about America--both his affection and his irritation" Carpenter & Prichard 296. "This is the only book of Kipling's which is set entirely in America. All the characters are American. Not only that but the heart of the book--its moral in a single sentence--is one of Kipling's main beliefs of this period expressed in terms essentially American or perhaps more particularly New England. He put it later in verse: 'And the Gods of the Copy-book Maxims said: 'If you don't work you will die!' It is a saga of hard physical work in conflict with natural forces. It is a book which could hardly have been written by anyone who did not admire Huckleberry Finn; it is a book whose claim to survival rests mainly on detail and it is all American detail" Mason 119. ‎Kim.‎

‎New York: The Modern Library 1950. First Modern Library edition of what many consider Kipling's masterpiece. Octavo original cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Kim unfolds against the backdrop of The Great Game the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. The novel made the term "Great Game" popular and introduced the theme of great power rivalry and intrigue. It is set after the Second Afghan War which ended in 1881 but before the Third probably in the period 1893 to 1898. The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people culture and varied religions of India. "The book presents a vivid picture of India its teeming populations religions and superstitions and the life of the bazaars and the road." Considered by many to be Kipling's masterpiece opinion appears varied about its consideration as children's literature or not. Roger Sale in his history of children's literature concludes "Kim is the apotheosis of the Victorian cult of childhood but it shines now as bright as ever long after the Empire's collapse." Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2003 the book was listed on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novel." ‎The Five Nations.‎

‎New York: Doubleday Page & Co 1903. First American edition of Kipling's notable poetry collection. Octavo original cloth with gilt titles to the spine and front panel black stamped vignette to the front panel. In very good condition. Doubleday, Page & Co hardcover books‎

‎The Jungle Books.‎

‎Garden City and New York: Doubleday & Company Inc 1948. The Book Club edition of Kipling's Jungle Books. Octavo two volumes original cloth. Illustrations by Albert Watson. Foreword by Nelson Doubleday. Near fine in very good dust jackets. Book design by Oscar Ogg. Author photograph by Elliot and Frey Ltd. Kipling's Jungle Books center on the story of Mowgli an orphaned 'man-cub' who is raised in the jungle of India by wolves where he comes to learn the Laws of the Jungle. A major theme throughout the books is abandonment followed by fostering as in the life of Mowgli echoing Kipling's own childhood. Another is law vs. freedom; the stories are not about animal behavior but about human archetypes in animal form. The books remain popular to this day and have been adapted several times for film and other media including the classic Walt Disney 1967 animation and its 2016 remake.
