After preliminary printing of selections from the text in a number of newspapers the book was published by Macmillan Kipling's established UK publisher on 21 December 1937. Kipling had stated the intention to deal in this account with "his life from the point of view of his work". He thus focuses on describing the inspiration genesis and workmanship of his literary creations while remaining reticent on most facets of his private life that are not directly connected to his works. Another is law vs. freedom; the stories are not about animal behavior but about human archetypes in animal form. The books remain popular to this day and have been adapted several times for film and other media including the classic Walt Disney 1967 animation and its 2016 remake. In very good condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. Octavo two volumes bound in full morocco by Atelier with gilt titles and tooling to the spines in six compartments within raised bands triple gilt ruling and fleuron cornerpieces to the front and rear panels gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles marbled endpapers all edges gilt illustrated with engravings by J. L. Kipling W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny including tissue-guarded frontispiece to Volume I. With the original cloth spines front and rear panels bound in at the rear of each volume. In fine condition. An exceptional set of these classic children's books. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. 1898. Single page folded into quarters on custom writing paper from The Vineyard Hotel in Cape Town South Africa with "The Vineyard Newlands ____ 189_" printed at the header. "Ap. 12 1898. Dear Morgan Crofton: We are in the last agonies of packing today but I hope to have the honour of calling on the general before 12: so Tomorrow. I am most sorry to have missed him this visit. Very sincerely yours Rudyard Kipling." Written to British Army officer Sir Morgan George Crofton during Kipling's first winter holiday in South Africa during which he was welcomed by a number of Cape Colony's leading politicians including the letter's recipient. Rudyard Kipling made his first holiday visit to Cape Town South Africa in early 1898 accompanied by his wife and two young children. Kipling had recently been awarded the title Poet of the Empire of Great Britain and was taking an increasingly political stance in his poetry as illustrated in his most recent poem "Recessional" composed for the occasion of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. He was warmly received in South Africa by some of the most influential politicians of the time whom he developed long-lasting friendships with and led to his interest in the British cause in the Boer War. unknown books

This copy survived fire and water when so many of its fellows were destroyed by Nazi barbarism at Bodley House in October 1940. After being stored nearby and escaping more bombs it returned to the resurrected bookshop and now leaves Bodley House to find sanctuary in friendly hands in a luckier land. With all good wishes Bertram Rota June 6th 1941." Bertram Rota began selling books in 1923 and was essentially the first bookseller to specialize in modern first editions. In 1923 Rota moved operations to the former location of the Bodley Head publishing house on Vigo Street in London where in spite of sustaining a direct hit during a Nazi blitzkrieg the bookshop remained for twenty-eight years. Written in vernacular dialect Kipling's The Barrack Room Ballads contains some of Kipling's most well-known work including the poems "Gunga Din" "Tommy" "Mandalay" and "Danny Deever" which established his early fame as a poet. The first poems were published in the Scots Observer in the first half of 1890 and collected in Barrack-Room Ballads and Other Verses in 1892. Kipling later returned to the theme in a group of poems collected in The Seven Seas under the same title. A third group of vernacular Army poems from the Boer War titled "Service Songs" and published in The Five Nations 1903 can be considered part of the Ballads as can a number of other uncollected pieces.
