‎PUCK OF POOK'S HILL‎

‎1906. with 1906 dust jacket London: Macmillan and Co. 1906. 4 pp ads dated "15.8.06". Original red cloth with Ganesha device elephant-and-swastika in gilt with dust jacket.

First English Edition published on the same day as the American. This is Kipling's version in prose and verse of the adventures of the mischievous sprite Robin Goodfellow later continued in REWARDS AND FAIRIES. Though the American edition has four Arthur Rackham plates this English one has 20 attractive illustrations by Harold R. Millar. The swastika Indian symbol for peace and continuity appears both on the front cover and on the half-title verso -- once clockwise and once counter-clockwise. This is a fine bright copy -- with atypically no erosion of the gilt on the front cover medallion. because this copy has the very uncommon dust jacket. The list of Kipling titles on the jacket's rear panel is led by TRAFFICS AND DISCOVERIES "Thirty-second Thousand" -- which is the proper title at the top of the list but is not the earliest state with no mention of which "thousand"; there is a still-later state with PUCK added to the top of the list. The upper corner of the rear flap is clipped which is odd because according to Richards there was no price there. The jacket's condition is very good-plus -- quite complete but with some subtle repair at the top and middle of the spine panel. Quite uncommon with jacket. Richards A205; Stewart 306. Housed in a simple clamshell case. unknown books‎

‎KIM‎

‎1901. in 1901 dust jacket London: Macmillan and Co. 1901. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth with Ganesha device in gilt with dust jacket.

First English Edition of the book that "is acknowledged as Kipling's masterpiece in fiction. The novel is the finest written about the India of the British Empire" CGEL. It follows the adventures of an orphan son of a British soldier who is raised by an Indian woman becomes a disciple to a Lama and ultimately becomes an undercover agent as well. The illustrations are by John Lockwood Kipling the author's father. The American edition is considered to have been published earlier though in the same month as the English one. As with most of Kipling's British editions published by Macmillan the binding is red cloth with in gilt the "Ganesha" device -- an elephant's head with a swastika the latter had been a ubiquitous symbol in India for millennia; its use ceased in the early 1930s when events in Germany gave the symbol a whole new meaning. This volume is in bright just-about-fine condition just a touch of wear at the head of the spine. Included is the quite scarce 1901 dust jacket in its first state listing on the rear panel 14 titles in the Uniform Edition with THE NAULAHKA at the bottom and with KIM at the top with no statement of print number. The jacket is in good-to-very good condition spine quite darkened so as to be illegible wear particularly at the ends of the jacket's spine. Richards A174; Stewart 254; Livingston 250. One of the books selected as a "Modern Library 100" for the 20th Century seldom seen in jacket. unknown books‎

‎CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS‎

‎1897. A Story of the Grand Banks. With Illustrations by I.W. Taber. London: Macmillan and Co. 1897. 2 pp undated ads. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in gilt all page edges gilt.

First English Edition published about a month after the American. This is Kipling's great novel about the cod fishing fleet of Gloucester Massachusetts written while the newlywed Kiplings lived in Vermont. Kipling freely acknowledged that the book owed much to Dr. James Conland of Brattleboro who brought the Kiplings' elder daughter into the world -- for Conland had been a member of the Massachusetts fishing fleet and it was he who took Kipling to explore the wharves and quays of Boston and Gloucester. The American edition in fact is dedicated to Conland; this English edition bears no dedication. This is the only book of Kipling's which is set entirely in America. All the characters are American. Not only that but the heart of the book -- its moral in a single sentence -- is one of Kipling's main beliefs of this period expressed in terms essentially American or perhaps more particularly New England. He put it later in verse: ".If you don't work you will die!" It is a saga of hard physical work in conflict with natural forces. It is a book which could hardly have been written by anyone who did not admire Huckleberry Finn; it is a book whose claim to survival rests mainly on detail and it is all American detail. Mason CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS was the fourth and last volume to be bound in Macmillan's attractive gift binding style used for the JUNGLE BOOKs in 1894-1895 and for SOLDIER TALES in 1896. In 1937 forty years after publication this tale was made into a film starring Freddie Bartholomew Spencer Tracy who won an Oscar Lionel Barrymore and Mickey Rooney. This is a bright near-fine copy with at the top of the rear cover a damp-mark that affects only the sheen and not the color of the cloth; there is scarcely any of the usual rubbing at the spine ends and the original black endpapers are not cracked. Richards A103; Stewart 163. unknown books‎

‎FROM SEA TO SEA. Letters of Travel. In Two Volumes.‎

‎1899. New York: Doubleday & McClure Company 1899. Original blind-stamped sea green cloth.

First Edition the English edition is dated 1900. These volumes include the first authorized edition of "American Notes" "Letters of Marque" "The City of Dreadful Night" and "The Smith Administration"; according to Kipling's Preface he was "forced" to issue this title "by the enterprise of various publishers" who were pirating and embellishing his earlier works. The half-title versos bear Kipling's usual icon from India the swastika -- which until the 1930s signified peace and continuity. This is a near-fine set with just a touch of rubbing. ‎The Story of The Gadsbys A Tale Without a Plot‎

‎Allahbad India: A.H. Wheeler 1890. Hardcover. Good . Octavo size 97 pp. Joseph Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 remains a literary force today through his many stories including "The Jungle Book" and poems such as "Gunga Din". A recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907 at the age of 42 he remains the youngest recipient to date; considered for the British Poet Laureateship and a knighthood he refused both.

This is one of Kipling's earliest published writings this volume was number two in the "Indian Railway Series" first published in 1888 in wrappers. This volume seems to a variant of the first English edition with the title page listing "Author of 'Soldiers Three' 'Wee Willie Winkie' Etc." directly beneath the author's name; however while showing Messrs. A.H. Wheeler & Co. Allahabad as publisher it does not also list Sampson Low Marston Searle & Rivington. Pagination also most closely matches the first English without the three leaves between the contents and text and with two leaves of advertisements at the end not one. Interestingly the portion of the front wrap tipped onto the front board does not match exactly that shown in Livingston although clearly it is the same scene with minor details having been changed.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound between boards covered with marbled paper green cloth shelfback the illustration only from the front wrapper tipped onto the front board and the illustration from the back wrapper tipped onto the back board with a library number assigned to the cloth spine in white to the illustration on the front board in red and to the front free endpaper in red but no other library markings no pockets; octavo size 8.75" by 5.5" pagination: i-ii ads iii title page iv ads v-vi preface vii contents viii blank 1-86 87 "Opinions of the Press" 88-89 ads.

___CONDITION: Good overall the binding while worn is sturdy and the text is complete; with the library markings as set forth above the boards somewhat rubbed corners worn and bumped prior owner name stamped to front paste down wear and old damp stains to the first leaf and the final two leaves otherwise internally quite good title page with "0/800" in black to middle of the page gutter crack between last two pages of ads. An interesting variant that is worn externally readable as is a good copy.

___CITATION: Variant of Livingston 33.

___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Small knick to the spine of Jungle Book and dampstain at the lower gutter of the first and last few leaves. Dark green endpapers. Internally both copies bright and clean with just a bit of scattered foxing to the second. An attractive pair of Kipling's most memorable works.

Based on folk tales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India but written while in Vermont. This work of several inter-related short stories met with huge success upon publication and continues to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller their publication "caused even severe critics of Kipling's previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature The Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli a human man-cub raised by wolves as he tries to find his proper place in the world. As he struggles with his own identity he finds allies and adversaries among the animal communities through which he travels. They also include the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi the heroic mongoose who would later inspire an animated short voiced by Orson Welles. ‎Just So Stories. With 35 Illustrations by the Author. Reprint of the First Edition.‎

‎New York: Weathervane Books 1978. Octavo black leatherette hardcover gilt letters vi 210 pp. Fine in a Near-Fine dust jacket with lightly sunned spine. From dust jacket: “Once upon a Time O Best Beloved†and so begins one of the best loved and most respected collections of stories for children Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories. This edition includes the author’s own unique illustrations. Kipling’s bold linear fantasies in the style of art nouveau as well as his attention to realistic detail create an intriguing and strikingly different interpretation. The first tale “How the Whale Got Its Throat†a tall tale of a big whale sets the tone for these wild “Venturesome adventures†to use Kipling’s own words. One glance at the table of contents will reveal that the Just So Stories appeal most to inquisitive and fantasy-loving minds. These are stories which tell us of the Timeof Very Beginnings; how for instance the camel got its hump how the elephant got its trunk or how the alphabet was made. From the “more-than-oriental splendour†of the Parsee’s hat to “the great-grey-green Limpopo river†these stories are spun from Kipling’s travels and adventures in India. Kipling incorporates a host of exotic and bizarre creatures. Have you ever encountered the extraordinary Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake or Slow-and-Solid Tortoise or Yellow-Dog Dingo or the Rhinoceros with a horn on his nose two piggy eyes and few manners Written in a jocular and fanciful style with internal rhymes and lyrical phrases these Just So Stories demand to be read aloud. Kipling’s tales tell us how “it was so - just so - a little time ago†and not so long ago that we cannot continue to be amused and beguiled by these stories of the “High and Far Off Times†of Rudyard Kipling.
