"La situation, dabord préoccupante, devint bientôt dramatique. Les autorités anglaises organisent des évacuations et les regroupements des personnes sinistrées dans des camps situés sur des hauteurs :" En février, ce fut le dégel. Clarke laisse Wendy dans un camp et reprend la navigation sur une sorte de mer intérieure (et sous la pluie) en compagnie de Sonya, une pianiste sauvée des eaux. Ils se retrouvent quasiment seuls dans lunivers lorsque leur dérive les rapproche dune espèce darche publicitaire (celle des produits Glub) occupée par un petit groupe dindividus qui les recueille : "Ce radeau appartenait à lInternational Unitarian Breakfast Food Company. Il était en balsa, et généreusement pourvu dun stock de Glub, " laliment idéal du petit déjeuner : suffit à lui tout seul ! " lInternational Unitarian Breakfast Food Company affirmait que lhomme pouvait se nourrir exclusivement de Glub ".On y trouve Arthur Rensham, le patron, Muriel Wesley, une jeune femme et son mari Otterdale, un culturiste, Tony Ryle, Gertrude Harrisson, une actrice, ainsi que Banner Harold le pasteur, tous gens de hasard. Clarke a des difficultés à se faire admettre à bord contrairement à Sonya dont lavenir de reproductrice plaît à Arthur.
