Abraham Lincoln Book Shop 1971. 1st edition. Soft Cover. Fine. "Few characters in American history are more closely identified with a particular city than is Abraham Lincoln with Springfield Illinois. There was much sentiment but also much truth in Lincoln's farewell to his friends and neighborsÉWhat kind of town Springfield was in Lincoln's day tells much of the kind of man Lincoln was. The two sories are inextricably interwoven in the documents and newspapers which Paul Angle explored in gathering the homely but fascinating data for his book." Back Cover 1ST EDITION 2ND PRINTING. EXCERPT: Foreword - The Lincoln Reader is a biography written by sixty-five authors. From their writings one hundred seventy-nine selections have been chosen and arranged to form an integrated narrative. Great names in Lincoln biography--Carl Sandburg Ida M. Tarbell Lord Charnwood Albert J. Beveridge William H. Herndon John G. Nicolay and John Hay--stand out prominently; others like James G. Randall and Benjamin P. Thomas are better known to scholars than to the general public. Quite a few whose writings appear here have been forgotten by almost everyone and at least two who wrote contemporary news stories which I have included have never emerged from anonymity. And I suppose there are not many readers who would include Lincoln himself in a list of Lincoln biographers yet some of his writings have notable biographical significance. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Rutgers University Press Hardcover

One Hundred Years of Law: An Account of the Law Office Which John T. Stuart Founded in Springfield Illinois a Century Ago
Springfield: Brown Hay and Stephens 1928. Hardcover. Small 4to. Tan buckram paper label. 53pp. Frontispiece illustrations. Very good. Uncommon first edition of this company history with an unusual connection: Donation bookplate on front pastedown records that this copy was given to Springfield Junior College Springfield Illinois by the family of Stuart Brown -- of the law firm that published this title. In a nutshell Stuart and Lincoln 1837-41 evolved into Stuart Edwards and Brown Christopher Brown joining the firm in 1860; in 1886 following the death of John T. Stuart and Benjamin Edwards Brown's son Stuart joined the firm; later came the grandson of Stephen Logan Lincoln's second law partner Stuart's brother-in-law Logan Hay; by 1921 and after many firm name changes the firm of Brown Hay & Stephens came into being. Stuart brown died in 1924 but the firm of which he was partner published this centennial history and gave this copy to the local college library -- whose only other marking is a circular blind-embossed imprint on title page. This copy also bears an interesting philatelic addition: Tipped to rear pastedown is a fascinating commemorative envelope NOT a first day cover6" X 3 3/4" cancelled in Springfield on 14 April 1966 and bearing the 4-cent Lincoln stamp. Envelope is captioned "Logan & Lincoln Law Partnership" and features images of Lincoln and Logan and brief text describing their partnership. MONAGHAN 2989. Brown, Hay and Stephens hardcover
