Bissinger HG. H. G.
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: A Town a Team and a Dream.
Reading MA & New York:: Addison-Wesley 1990. Very near fine in a like dustjacket. First printing. Focusing on the town of Odessa Texas - a town with an empty main street closed up movie theatres and for-sale signs everywhere - and with a high school football stadium that seats 20000 and is filled on Friday nights. This is an examination of the role of high school sports in America but it is about more than just sports - it is about race politics economics and education and "about young lives whose course may be determined for good before they've really begun." Basis for both the very good film in 2004 directed by Peter Berg and starring Billy Bob Thornton and Derek Luke and the equally good televions series begun in 2006. You don't have to be a football fan to find this a moving and ultimately very sad book. 355 pp. Addison-Wesley, hardcover
